Current trends in online delivery and assessment in ANZ
Based on data form a range of ACODE Surveys over the last 12 months, and other industry data, there have been some distinct trends emerge that suggest that institutions are taking a fresh look at how they conduct teaching and assessment, longer term. Much of this has been predicated on what was necessary to deal with lock-down situations due to COVID-19, but more recently this has allowed institutions to consider the longer-term advantages in accommodating different forms of assessment, those that have traditionally fallen out of what was considered ‘normal’, most notably the ‘exam’. This shift in thinking has also extended to what institutions considering different forms of delivery of their core content, with there being a distinct shift away from what has been the mainstay for centuries, the ‘Lecture’. This shift has allowed for more authentic forms of delivery, ones based in more collaborative and active approaches. This presentation with provide a summary of some of the key data and share some examples of how some institutions are approaching the next few years, as uncertainty around the short-term future of in-person learning and teaching persists.

Every student has unique circumstances, experiences, challenges and goals, and these are often invisible to educators and staff working to support them. Our Journey is a creative and flexible tool for students to map, log, plan and represent their study journey. This enables students to reflect on their experiences, celebrate their achievements and identify skills gained through overcoming challenges, all of which contribute to positive mental wellbeing and growth mindset.
Meanwhile, educators can learn from representations of student journeys, meaning the design of programmes, classes and study support can be informed by student voice and experience.
Finally, when student journey representations are shared by students and educators as a co-owned artefact, this can build a powerful, reciprocal learning relationship in which students are supported to succeed.

Adoption of Blackboard in the ELICOS system: Innovating and Augmenting Qualit...
In 2016 the Centre for English Teaching (CET) launched Blackboard for its university pathway courses (DEC) as part of an initiative to innovate and transform them into high quality blended Academic English language programs that would support students in developing both academic skills and awareness of the technology and systems required to excel during the first semester at university. While LMS use is standard practice in higher education, for the English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS) sector the integration of an online platform is still new territory and there is great potential for innovation within teaching and learning practices. Moreover, the unique context allows for a fresh perspective on how Blackboard, at its core, is a dynamic and flexible platform in teaching and learning practices that fosters communities of practice and consolidates traditional educational practices.
The implementation of Blackboard across university pathways courses at CET faced two major hurdles. To begin with, international students were less familiar with the culture and expectations surrounding LMS use at tertiary level and the nature of independent learning. Secondly, teaching staff had varying degrees of proficiency and experience in using technology in the classroom. Dealing with the challenge of educating, immersing and empowering both teachers and students simultaneously in their use of Blackboard as an integrated and powerful tool in teaching and learning raised numerous questions and helped gain valuable insights into adoption and adaption of technology and the opportunity for creative disruption. Grounding innovations in solid pedagogy, integrating technology and independent learning with in-class interaction and making learning objectives clear to both students and teachers enabled the successful uptake of Blackboard and allowed for greater support and autonomy for both teachers and students.
PDPIE Framework: Online Course Development Quality Cycle
This document introduces the PDPIE framework for quality online course development. It begins with defining quality in education and identifying challenges in online course design related to changing technologies, roles, and standards. The framework was developed based on a review of existing guidelines, interviews with instructors, and a questionnaire on key design elements. The PDPIE framework consists of five phases for quality online course development: Planning, Design & Development, Production, Implementation, and Evaluation. It is intended to provide a flexible yet descriptive guideline for institutions and instructional designers.

The course was adapted from a second year, campus-based undergraduate course that Momna Hejmadi teaches on, so it offered a perfect opportunity for students to gain real-life perspectives from the public. It also extended the learning space to a global community of learners from school pupils, health professionals to cancer-survivors.

Helping designers design: proving learning designs using the e-Design and Ass...

This presentation reports on the efficacy of a mobile learning intervention that combined ‘push notifications’ and game principles within a timed quiz app. An institutional interdisciplinary case study was conducted which compared rates of student retention and academic performance with their usage of a purpose-designed learning app. Leading up to lectures the app pushed daily quizzes to students’ personal mobile devices and then rewarded them with feedback, points, badges and a position on a leaderboard. During this session, the findings of this study will be discussed and conclusions made in regards to what findings mean for the future research into higher education learning enabled via mobile app technologies.
Assessment of e learning readiness
E-learning has been widely regarded as a mode of delivery that offers possibilities for increasing access and improving quality in higher education institutions. This paper reports on the results of an assessment of the readiness for the implementation of this novel initiative among lecturers and students in the Faculty of Education at the National University of Lesotho. Surveys were administered to students and lecturers in the Faculty of Education which revealed high levels of readiness in relation to attitudes and awareness towards e-learning and areas of immense challenges emerging from institutional constraints as well as conceptual shifts required for a successful implementation of the initiative. The researchers recommend a clearer commitment by the university, including an explicit financial budgeting, as well as continuing professional development and technical support to e-learning implementation if the initiative is to realise its full potentials for improving the teaching and learning experiences in the university.
Hybrid Learning: A Program Evaluation
Michael Wilder presented a program evaluation of hybrid learning at UNLV. Between 2010-2012, the number of hybrid courses offered annually increased from 100 to over 30 departments. Findings showed most instructors have misconceptions about hybrid learning definitions and feel unprepared. Recommendations included establishing clear definitions for instruction modes, creating development procedures following best practices, and providing instructor training on hybrid learning best practices.

Ursula Rutherford is developing evaluation instruments to assess student learning in an evolving undergraduate engineering curriculum at Coventry University that is increasingly adopting activity-led learning (ALL). The research has three interconnected strands to identify teaching quality indicators, investigate how they can be recognized, and evaluate their effectiveness. However, the rapid changes in modules and student cohorts pose a challenge for validating new instruments. Rutherford is seeking ideas from others on how to demonstrate rigor in the research and reliability of instruments developed in this environment of constant change and shorter feedback cycles.

- Data can help identify issues like high attrition rates in certain subjects, and lack of student preparation or engagement. But it needs to be interpreted carefully within the proper context.

- Data should supplement, not replace, educators' expertise and judgment. The human element of teaching and mentoring is still important for student well-being and development.
