Games, Social Impact, and Student Outcomes
Developing games and web applications for social impact moves students from drills and assignments to authentic experiences that has led to community partnerships, internships, and employment opportunities.
Lauderhill 6-12, a Title 1 combo school in Broward County is where students develop online tools and games that address relevant needs of neighborhood families and the local community. Student motivation, excitement, and engagement have improved knowing that their original ideas can help others and with investor support original ideas can come to fruition. Student work has been recognized by Entertainment Software Association (ESA), Oracle Technologies, and the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance.
Participants will hear and take away strategies on how to reduce obstacles, pilot programs, and build relationships in order to create a culture of creating through computer science. Participants will hear and take away strategies on how to take advantage of community resources, national events, non-profits and pipe them through a sieve of student interest and game development that results in a culture of games, apps, fun, and learning.
Notes:
Teaching in a Title 1 school has plenty of challenges for students and educators. The lives of our students address a glut of issues a lot more pressing than homework assignments; they have a lot more on their mind than common core standards. Having worked in Title 1 schools during my 26 years as an educator I believe in the power of creating and critical thinking through games, mobile apps, and web applications. By enabling and empowering students, I have been able to see the increase of motivation, engagement, and attendance. While this experience does not remove the weight of home issues, it does provide a source of ownership, accomplishment, and community. The strategic indicators of digital transformation in education Reka Racsko
Digital transformation of technological and methodical culture in education is highly topical from several aspects. Info-communicational strategies have already issued an action plan containing several points to be implemented in order to create digital state in the forthcoming years. In our present lecture we try to determine the indicators, which examine the selected contents by placing electronic learning environment (ELE) into focus, using tool system of comparative pedagogy, creative methods and document- and content analysing strategies. These aspects can be divided into four major intersections forming the changing structure of content analysis: pedagogy and frames of ELE; circumstances of introducing ELE, supporting systems; role, attitude and competences of human capital; sustainability. When selecting theoretical sample, multi-dimensional sample-taking is applied since time-, spacial, organisational-, administrative- and social scope is taken into consideration as well.

Jisc Digifest 2017 - plenary session with keynote from Geoff MulganJisc
Host: Paul Feldman, chief executive, Jisc.
Keynote speaker: Geoff Mulgan, chief executive and CEO, Nesta.
Nesta is the UK's innovation foundation and runs a wide range of activities in investment, practical innovation programmes and research.
Speaker: Dr. Ross Parry, associate professor and deputy pro-vice-chancellor (digital), University of Leicester
Developing digital capability is a strategic priority for the University of Leicester as it works towards the ambition of becoming a "discovery-led university” that is “ever more focused on innovation" (University of Leicester 2015 Strategic Plan). The role of digital technologies in achieving this vision is articulated in greater detail in the university's digital strategy: Discovery-Enabling Digital 2016-2020 digital is at the core of how the university operates and the journey towards achieving its teaching, learning and research ambitions.
The university is taking a whole-organisation view of what this will involve (teaching and research, students and staff, academic and professional services) and is working on several co-ordinated and interlinked strands that contribute to the overall implementation plan. The university has adopted a customised digital literacy framework which is based on the Jisc building digital capability framework, and this provides a consistent framework through which digital training and skills development across the university can be delivered.
The university is also using the Jisc building digital capability discovery tool to support staff and students with their understanding of what digital skills they require to support their professional practice and future careers. Senior leadership support for such a large-scale digital initiative is vital and the university has recognised this by appointing a deputy pro-vice-chancellor to lead the work on the digital campus.
In this presentation Ross will share his experiences of leading this initiative and how he is working with teams across the university to achieve this vision for a digitally capable organisation.

Understanding the EU Referendum through IRTIpsos UK
New research provides an insight into not just what people say about the European Union (EU), but also with how much conviction they hold their views. The research provides revealing findings for both sides of the debate. Using a technique called Implicit Reaction Time (IRT), which measures how quickly people express an opinion, the research gives an indication of the strength of people’s feelings towards leaving or staying in the European Union (EU) and areas of weak association that may indicate differences between what people say and how they will vote on 23 June. Eleven issues relating to the EU debate were tested, capturing both the explicit (stated) support for leaving or staying in the EU, and the extent to which this support is held emphatically without doubt.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!

6. How: Student Interns
• Globally staffed 450 Student Interns, 215 in the US
• Target schools all across the Globe
• Intern projects aligned with degree program and career interest
• Each intern receives one on one mentoring, service learing
opportunities, and live the vmware life on our campus.
• They make an impact to the business: Horizon Mobile.
“Interns are actually responsible for some of the more innovative projects at
VMware,” says Charles Fan, SVP of R&D, Storage and Application Services.
7. How: VMwomen
• VMware VMwomen is our enterprise-wide initiative to increase the representation of
women at every level in every function and region. It is grounded in research showing
how greater diversity results in increased innovation that in turn leads to better business
outcomes. The long-term goals of our program are to:
– Become an employer of choice for women
– Increase the representation of women globally
– Help women grow into senior leadership roles
– Encourage men to become actively involved
– Increase the pool of female talent choosing to enter technology
– Sponsoring, nurturing and supporting girls in STEM fields with a focus on developing a pipeline of
women in computer science and engineering

Summary
1. Demand is exceeding supply – need for technical skills is as high as ever
2. Technology Disruption is driving the need.
3. Culture is shifting. Prepare for it.
4. Lack of Innovation – if its not “cool” they wont come
5. Get involved at the K-12 level and Start Early and sometimes at home
6. Internships – make them structured and meaningful
7. Diversity
Editor's Notes
Start with the “Dark Ages”
But with the majority of workers bringing so many of their personal devices, (and apps) into the organizations usage trends such as “bring your own device” (BYOD) and “corporate-owned, personally enabled” (COPE) have become mainstay essentials to delivering IT scale and end-user choice.
Note:
Note:
“For more than a decade, educators have struggled to find ways to attract students to STEM. High school interest in STEM fields, in particular, has fallen substantially: even as STEM employment has risen by more than 30 percent since 2000, student interest has fallen nearly 19 percent, according to data analyzed as part of the U.S. News/Raytheon STEM Index”
Prior to accepting an offer at VMware, students have the opportunity to learn exactly what projects they’re going to work on. This allows students to see if the project is in line with their degree, program, and career interests,”
“Interns are actually responsible for some of the more innovative projects at VMware,” says Charles Fan, SVP of R&D, Storage and Application Services.
This is because students come with a fresh perspective that pushes boundaries on technology and the latest academic knowledge. VMware’s Horizon Mobile project essentially started from a summer internship project? It’s pretty cool to think that student interns where on the ground floor driving what’s next in mobile cloud computing at VMware.
At VMware, we understand the importance of getting students excited about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) subjects early in their academic careers.
We believe that by fostering hands-on experiences with VMware products and interacting with the brightest minds in the industry, we can encourage students to study these areas and become as passionate about the future of technology as we are.
Our student outreach efforts include partnership building, collaboration, event participation and sponsorship with the following organizations at the international, national and regional levels:
First Bytes
2014 marked third year participating
One week camp at UT Austin for 60 girls interested in pursuing a computer science degree
Hosted them for 2 days in Austin Office.
Broken into teams and participated in various programming activities
Spent time with female VMW R&D staff members discussing their individual career paths
The “Anything Boys Can Code Girls Can Code Better” tshirts were a hit.
Note:
According to one statistic less than 40% of Americans receive college degrees . Demand for employees with STEM backgrounds has increased 30%, the level of interest in STEM subjects has dropped by 19%.
This last decade has seen more industry wide technology disruption than arguable the prior three (Mobile, Virtualization, Cloud)
The new graduating workforce expects access all the time from anywhere. The idea being tied down traditional office isn't as appealing.
4. We see it internally, if the work is not cool they will go where it is. The Facebook phenomenon.
While kids think its still fun, establish curiousity building activities with children can help establish pre science and math skills important to future jobs.
7. Diversity – foster, develop and mentor girls and women who wish to enroll in STEM courses. Recent efforts to involve young women seem to have paid off despite the decline in overall interest.
