The study evaluated the clinical decision support (CDS) capabilities of 9 commercially available clinical information systems (CIS) that were certified by the Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology (CCHIT). The researchers developed a taxonomy with 42 CDS elements across 4 axes and interviewed vendors and customers to assess availability in the 9 systems. Results showed systems varied in their CDS capabilities, with the best system missing only 1 capability and the worst missing 18 capabilities. The study aimed to quantify CDS capabilities of commercial EHRs but had limitations such as relying on self-reports and not considering feature usability.
