 Introduction
 Design Criteria For Synbiotics
 Function of Synbiotics
 Mechanism of Synbiotics
 Types of Synbiotics
 Applications .
 A synbiotic is defined as a “mixture of probiotics and
prebiotics that beneficially affects the host by improving
the survival and activity of beneficial microorganisms in
the gut.”
SYNBIOTICS = Probiotic + Prebiotic
Examples :
1.Bifidobacteria and
Fructooligosaccharides (FOS)
2.Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG
and inulins.
3.Bifidobacteria or lactobacilli with FOS or inulins
Or galactooligosaccharides (GOS).
 Synbiotics are those products in which the perbiotics
compound selectively favours the growth of probiotics
and their metabolite production .
 Synbiotic effects can occur in two ways:-
1. By improvement in the host’s health after ingestion
of a mixture of prebiotics and probiotic strains.
2. By the promotion of indigenous beneficial
microflora such as bifidobacteria after ingestion of
prebiotics alone .
1.Probiotics promote specific, desired effects on the
host.
2.Probiotics are safe.
3.Probiotics are impermanent.
4.Prebiotics selectively promote the growth of
intended bacteria.
5. Prebiotics can be present in the host or introduced
with the probiotic.
6. Prebiotics should not cause harm.
7. Prebiotics do not have to be carbon substrates.
8. Synbiotics should have a greater effect than the
prebiotic or probiotic alone.
The mechanism of synbiotic effects is via
 Modulation of the metabolic activity in the intestine
along with maintenance of the intestinal biostructure,
development of beneficial microbiota, and the
concomitant inhibition of potential pathogens present
in the GI tract.
 As a result, a reduction in undesirable metabolites plus
inactivation of nitrosamines and carcinogenic
substances occurs.
 This further leads to positive effects on the host’s
health as a result of increased levels of SCFAs,
ketones, carbon disulfides, and methyl acetates.
 2 types:-
1.Complementary Synbiotics - A complementary
synbiotic comprises a probiotic plus a prebiotic (more
than one of each can be used), working independently
to achieve one or more health benefits.
2.Synergistic Synbiotics - A synergistic synbiotic is
composed of a live microorganism and a selectively
utilized substrate and these components are designed to
work together.
 Designing synbiotics for improved human healths.
 Improving gut health in poultry.
 Current application of synbiotics in aquaculture.
 Microencapsulated synbiotics are used in fruit –
based beverages.
