The Evolution of
the internet
Task 1
Brief history of the internet
Origins of the internet are rooted from the USA in the
1950’s when the Cold War was at its peak and the
tensions between North America and the Soviet Union
were high. Both countries were in possessions of deadly
nuclear weapons, so USA realized they needed systems
that couldn’t be affected by the Soviet’s nuclear attack.
At the time, the computers were large and expensive
machines which were only used by military scientists
and university staff. The ”computers” were powerful but
there were limited numbers of them which meant
researches had to travel far if they did want to use one.
Not one person invented the internet, but it was many
scientists and engineers working together to create the
‘Arpanet’, and later other inventors’ creations were
added and improved to make the web we know today.

Figure 2: This image shows the
different percentages, and the
different types of devices people use
to access the internet. As we can
see, the most used device is a
mobile phone followed by
smartphones. This data was
collected in the 3rd quarter of 2022
(July 1st-September 30th ) and the
age range used for the sample was
16-64 worldwide. (Statista, 2023)
Access to the Internet

Figure 3: This image shows the numbers
of people accessing the internet and
where they are based. As we can see,
the highest number of people is in North
America followed by Europe and Central
Asia. This data has been collected for
over 30 years to be able to see the trends
and rise of the internet. (Our World in
Data, 2015)

What information do customers
search for?
Unit 1: Evolution of Marketing
Figure 5: This image shows the Top 10 search topics that
people in the UK have looked up. A survey done by
ExpressVPN had included around 2000 Brits to see just
what the most common thing is people search for. The
highest and most simple being just to find out the weather,
followed by a lot of similarly simple ones that everyone
may admit to searching at least once a day.
Around 46% of the responders have admitted they could
not go a week without searching up for the answers to the
different questions they may have. (Digital Information
World, 2022)
What consumers buy online?
Unit 1: Evolution of Marketing
Figure 6: This table shows just what items and just
how much money people spend on buying things
online, with the highest being apparel. A lot of people
moved to online shopping when the covid-19
pandemic hit as it was the easiest and only option at
the time. (DoDropShipping. 2023)

Summary
To conclude, the internet has impacted our everyday lives
massively even though we may not see it. It has become
such a part of our life that when we cannot access it, we feel
like we are missing something. We rely on it to communicate
with friends and family, searching up bits of information,
shopping or even just streaming content.

Hello. My name is Daria and today I will be talking
about the Evolution of the internet and how it has
impacted our lives.
The origins of the internet started around the 1950’s,
during the cold War. Both the USA and Soviet Union
had access to nuclear weapons, so the USA needed
a system which wouldn’t be affected by the Soviets
attack. At that time, computers were large and
expensive, so there was only a limited number of
them to be used by military scientists and university
staff. Figure 1 shows one of the first electronic
computers which was developed by British electrical
company, the Elliot brothers in 1952.
Unit 1: Evolution of Marketing
As we can see, the most used device to access the internet
on is a mobile phone which is then followed by laptops or
desktop computers. It isn’t surprising that mobile phones
are most popular, no one wants to be carrying a laptop with
them everywhere they go. As technology is being
developed everyday, it’s not unusual to access the internet
through your smart TV’s or smart devices such as Alexa’s
or Google Home.
Everyone uses the internet for different reasons: school,
work, shopping or connecting with friends and family all
over the world. But where in the world has the most people
with access to the internet? That would be North America
followed quite closely by Europe and Central Asia. We can
see all the dips and spikes throughout the graph,
suggesting that either more people are getting access to
the internet or just becoming more open to the idea of it.
Script
As we started to take our mobile phones out with us,
we expect our mobile data to be able to handle
whatever we need it to do, without slowing us down.
As I mentioned before, everyone uses the internet
for different reasons, but people also search up
many different questions. In a study done by
ExpressVPN in 2022, they asked around 2000 Brits
to find out just what they look up. The highest and
most simple one being to find out the weather. I
know that I have looked up at least 8 out of 10 of
those topics just this week.
Unit 1: Evolution of Marketing
This list shows the most bought item through online
shopping: that being apparel. A lot of people were online
shopping before the covid-19 pandemic, but the pandemic
caused a lot more people to start shopping online.
According to a study conducted by the Office for National
Statistics in July 2022, they had calculated that before the
pandemic, in February 2020, internet sales were only
accounting for 19.7% of all official sales reports. But in May
2022, that number had gone up to 26.6%.
Having to stay inside and not being able to leave had a
massive increase on the online video consumption. By
June 2020, 48% of US adults had subscribed to at least
one online streaming service. They made it more appealing
by having exclusive content and lowered prices to fit all
budgets.

  • 13. Summary To conclude, the internet has impacted our everyday lives massively even though we may not see it. It has become such a part of our life that when we cannot access it, we feel like we are missing something. We rely on it to communicate with friends and family, searching up bits of information, shopping or even just streaming content. Unit 1: Evolution of Marketing

  • 18. Script Hello. My name is Daria and today I will be talking about the Evolution of the internet and how it has impacted our lives. The origins of the internet started around the 1950’s, during the cold War. Both the USA and Soviet Union had access to nuclear weapons, so the USA needed a system which wouldn’t be affected by the Soviets attack. At that time, computers were large and expensive, so there was only a limited number of them to be used by military scientists and university staff. Figure 1 shows one of the first electronic computers which was developed by British electrical company, the Elliot brothers in 1952. Unit 1: Evolution of Marketing As we can see, the most used device to access the internet on is a mobile phone which is then followed by laptops or desktop computers. It isn’t surprising that mobile phones are most popular, no one wants to be carrying a laptop with them everywhere they go. As technology is being developed everyday, it’s not unusual to access the internet through your smart TV’s or smart devices such as Alexa’s or Google Home. Everyone uses the internet for different reasons: school, work, shopping or connecting with friends and family all over the world. But where in the world has the most people with access to the internet? That would be North America followed quite closely by Europe and Central Asia. We can see all the dips and spikes throughout the graph, suggesting that either more people are getting access to the internet or just becoming more open to the idea of it.
  • 19. Script As we started to take our mobile phones out with us, we expect our mobile data to be able to handle whatever we need it to do, without slowing us down. As I mentioned before, everyone uses the internet for different reasons, but people also search up many different questions. In a study done by ExpressVPN in 2022, they asked around 2000 Brits to find out just what they look up. The highest and most simple one being to find out the weather. I know that I have looked up at least 8 out of 10 of those topics just this week. Unit 1: Evolution of Marketing This list shows the most bought item through online shopping: that being apparel. A lot of people were online shopping before the covid-19 pandemic, but the pandemic caused a lot more people to start shopping online. According to a study conducted by the Office for National Statistics in July 2022, they had calculated that before the pandemic, in February 2020, internet sales were only accounting for 19.7% of all official sales reports. But in May 2022, that number had gone up to 26.6%. Having to stay inside and not being able to leave had a massive increase on the online video consumption. By June 2020, 48% of US adults had subscribed to at least one online streaming service. They made it more appealing by having exclusive content and lowered prices to fit all budgets.
