The Evolution of
Technology and How
it Impacts Our Lives
• In the 1960’s the internet started as a way for government researchers to chare information. When this technology was first
released computers were large and immobile and people would need to travel to a site to use the computer. January 1st 1983 is
considered the internets first birthday.
• In the late 80’s the first internet service providers were formed, these included company like PSINet, UUNET and Netcom.
• The rise of the internet started from the 90’s but the largest changes that catapulted the internet into what it is today happened
over a fairly short period of time around 2005-2010.
• In today’s society people use the internet for an array of things as it makes it possible to find information quickly at the click of a
finger. One of the main reasons people use the internet today is to communicate with people, the internet makes it easy to
connect with people from all over the world, by messaging, social media and the many video calling platforms now available.
• There are 5.03 billion people around the world using the internet as of April 2022, this is the equivalent of 63.1% of the total
world’s population.

Consumer Trends
The upgrade and change in technology over the recent years has allowed consumers to be more
connected and in touch than ever before.
With the use of new technology such as smart phones and smart watches, it allows consumers to shop
and research at any given minute whether it be in the comfort of their own home, on public transport or
even on the other side of the world.
A study by the Centre for Economics and Business Research has shown that UK consumers spend over
£22.8 billion per year online shopping while on public transport.
With the introduction of online chats and social media, it is easier now more than ever for companies to
engage with their consumers and meet their needs in a more efficient way than ever before.
Summary
The changes in technology since the introduction of the internet in the 1980’s has been extraordinary
and shows no signs of slowing down.
Consumers are now accustomed to having the information at the click of a finger or a button and this
expectation will continue to grow.
As we move towards more electric cars and other electrical advances including robots our
expectations of technology will only increase.
More and more businesses are moving all their marketing ventures to be online only including
Facebook and Instagram ads and with the addition of different social media channels like Tik Tok
businesses need to continue to keep their fingers on the pulse. Businesses are starting to steer further
away from traditional marketing like magazine ads or other print marketing.
