- Before, each computer network used by U.S.
researchers/engineers had its own specific way of
communicating.
• 1983  Transfer Control Protocol (TCP) /
Internetwork Protocol (IP).
• 1990s  World Wide Web (WWW).
- By 1999, over 225,000,000 internet users.
• 2000s  YouTube, MySpace and Facebook.
- 2006  over 1,000,000,000 internet users.
• 2010  number of devices connected to
internet = 12,500,000,000.
The early days of the Internet-of-Things (IoT) (Cisco, 2011).
Digital Devices
used by Audiences:
• 2000  47% of households have a mobile
phone.
• 2022  93%.
Laptops.
Tablets.
PCs.
• 2023  35 to 54 years old (84% own a
laptop).
• 77% of young people (18-24) own a laptop

How do customers
search for information?
5 Channels:
• Search engines – Google, Bing, Yahoo. Search documents for
specified keywords. SEO optimises strategies to improve a
website or web page availability.
• Websites – first step to marketing products/services. Most
effective.
• Social networks – free social media platforms e.g. Facebook,
Instagram etc.
• Email – transmits messages with various formats e.g. graphics,
text, images etc. through an online network.
• Online advertising – Advertisements promoted through social
media, videos, search engines etc.
