3. Whether you haven't been to SXSW or you've
been going for years, each year keeps
progressing at an exponential pace.
The Health & Medtech track this year offered
over 70 sessions throughout 6 days in addition
to an expo, workshops, meet-ups and countless
unofficial events.
This was my first year and won't be my last. You
can expect to "drink out of a fire hose all week"
and the most sleep you'll get is on the plane.

This business model will continue to grow stronger as technologies
continue to come to market allowing everyone to gather more
quantified self-data such as wearables and other technologies outside
of the hospital.
As technology progresses, healthcare will take place when and where
we want it. "Health Hubs" of the future will leverage a combination of
sensors, AR/VR and AI to deliver seamless, proactive care. The next
level of innovation will include technology that connects smart
devices in the home to one central hub.
User Experience designers are becoming more common and important
in health systems due to human-centered design. HCD allows teams
to find and understand audience needs, generate solution ideas, test
hypotheses, and iteratively refine and focus their solutions.
Design is an essential part in healthcare today and will continue to be
a leading factor in tackling healthcare's inefficiencies and challenges.
Digital health technologies need to be integrated into everyday our

The FDA was built off of devices, not software. It has been difficult for
the FDA to keep up with technology. However they recently released
hands-off policies designed to promote innovation and efforts to
engage entrepreneur's early while still ensuring public safety.
HIPPA may be the most frightening word in healthcare, especially in
digital health. There is a lot of perceived confusion regarding
regulations and barriers perceived by developers, entrepreneurs
and investors. Much like the FDA, HIPAA has released new updates
on thi
Brands like Fitbit lead the way with aggregating new health data
through wearable technology. The CDT worked with Fitbit to explore
opportunities to help protect users and their data. Part of Fitbits
growth was attributed to their investment in internal R&D and
leveraging user data to learn and adjust their product accordingly.
Everyone hates regulation until you need it. When applying for FDA,
try to build bridges to how it is similar to existing products that have
successfully went through rather than saying it's going to "change
healthcare." 510K and digital based ideas are perceived as more
investable than "highly disruptive ideas"

Currently digital health solutions are made for active and
healthy consumers, the next step is creating digital health
solutions for those who aren't tech savvy and face chronic
illnesses and do not have the resources to pay for them.
The biggest bottleneck for entrepreneurs in this space is
sales and getting it into health systems.
Recently there has been new flexibility for providers to make,
electronic health information available when and where it
matters most and for healthcare providers and consumers to be
able to readily, safely, and securely exchange information.
Easing the reporting burden for providers and supporting
interoperability leads to improving patient outcomes.
This promotes the development of user-friendly technology
and allowing individuals to easily access their information so
they may be engaged and empowered in their care.

Even though we have access to data doesn't mean it's going to
change the behavior. The focus is to get "clean" data and for
emerging companies focusing on upstream data
communications to validate the data and give direction to
providers. When making decisions there needs to be a balance
between looking at data and listening to the patient. This is
variable, based on the type of care provided, but is still
essential.

Data suggest strong social support impacts medical adherence. That
means personal connections are essential to recovery. Startups are
forming and Health Systems are implementing solutions to create
these resources for patients and their families.
We are in the first phase of digital health. Currently, the user
experience isn't great due to the length of the process and the
number of different platforms needed. Example: Using a wearable to
get blood glucose levels to your provider's EHR. It is creating more of
a burden to manage their health. Going through this process you have
3 devices, Device App, Apple Health and EHR. In the future it will
become more seamless, creating a better user experience.
Healthcare is currently the only industry currently if you have a complication you
get paid more. Like other innovative industries, health and healthcare is starting to
reward the creation of value and not just the volumes of services provided.
Healthcare is reshaping everything from the delivery of services to the way those
services are paid for.

Medication + Hardware + Software + Analytics = Personalized Medicine
The goal is to design for the user and integrate into their lifestyle to gain mass
adoption and drive outcomes. The future will consist of these smart devices
informing users of changes or actions they need to take in order to get to a
healthy lifestyle or maintain what they currently have.

Life is fully engaging with everything around you. Currently nursing homes
to not offer that lifestyle that drives good physical health and mental health.
The answer is not integrating technology. In other cultures such as Japan
they have created communities to encompass this lifestyle such as Ibasho
where they have create socially integrated and sustainable communities that
value their elders. Additionally AustinUp is leading an initiative support
elderly people by creating an engaging community where they cal live full.
The MedTech industry is benefiting the aging society as well as the
economy. In this session innovators from Japan explained how
MedTech is a core part of its growth strategy and is revitalizing the
regional economy and newly developing healthcare IT and IoT to
solve the problems of healthcare disparity in the region.
The rise of technology and innovation in healthcare brings new challenges and
expectations, such as a heightened expectation of care, rising privacy concerns, new
business models and more data than we know what to do with. Over 1/3 of the U.S.
population are informal caregivers and collectively providing 1.2 billion hours of
unpaid work weekly. In 2012 this was valued at $691 billion (4.3% of the
country's GDP) and in 2050 is estimated to be valued at $838.8 billion.

We will double our senior population by 2050. Care-giving service and elderly
services account for $60 billion per year. Through emerging technologies, today
and those to come, the senior population will be able to stay in their home longer, be
self monitored, keep their families informed both from a reactive and proactive
viewpoint. This will help ease the upcoming demand for nursing homes.

This was the most interactive panel of all at SXSW, so it gets it's
own slide. The panel was qualified, diverse and the audience
was both experienced and new (like myself) in the healthcare
industry. We all had different backgrounds, opinions
and everyone's opinion was heard.
Andrey asked the audience,"Would you prefer having a doctor
who has another full time job?" I raised my hand "yes", because
it would offer a broader range of knowledge and insight which
may enhance patient outcomes. Others did not feel the same
way and had valid points.
Eventually millennials will take over medicine as the current
generation reaches the end(s) of their careers and the
millennials will then be caring for them.

I work on an innovation team at a large heath system
and also pursuing my Master's in Healthcare
Innovation at Arizona State University. I jumped over
to Healthcare Innovation about a year ago from the
tech startup world and went down to SXSW to gain
competency in the space and came out with so much
more including invaluable connections, conversations,
learnings and great food to top it off. Can't wait for
next year, in the meantime let's keep in contact.
