SWAMP Pilots
• Open canal based water distribution system at Po river in Reggio Emilia, Italy
• Different irrigation systems (surface, sprinklers, drip) and crops (grapes, pears, pumpkins, etc.)
• Goals: reduce water waste and energy used in pumps by advanced management practices, and to optimise
the irrigation by monitoring the water balance at fields
• Key challenge: optimize water distribution to increase usage of water passing along the canals
Pilot: Emilia-Romagna / CBEC (Italy)

• Farm in the south of Spain: lettuce, endive, spinach, herbs and baby leaf
• Serious water scarcity area with very limited water resources
• Goals: maximise the yield per water by monitoring the plants and water balance
• Key Challenge: reduce water usage in irrigation

• Area within 4 Brazilian states: Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí, Bahia: irrigated agricultural frontier
• Soybeans, corn, cotton production using variable rate irrigation with center pivots
• Objectives: production highly affected by drought and expansion depends on technologies that improve
operating costs and promote sustainability
• Key Challenge: reduce energy consumption

SWAMP Pilots
• Guaspari Winery: growing areas in altitude ranges between 800 m and 1,300 m
• Municipality of Espírito Santo do Pinhal (state of São Paulo) in the Mantiqueira Mountain Range
• Goal: perform automatic measuring of soil water content at different soil depths and in several vineyards
and to provide quick and accurate irrigation management information
• Key Challenge: improve quality of grapes and wine

SWAMP Pilots • Open canal based water distribution system at Po river in Reggio Emilia, Italy • Different irrigation systems (surface, sprinklers, drip) and crops (grapes, pears, pumpkins, etc.) • Goals: reduce water waste and energy used in pumps by advanced management practices, and to optimise the irrigation by monitoring the water balance at fields • Key challenge: optimize water distribution to increase usage of water passing along the canals Pilot: Emilia-Romagna / CBEC (Italy) 7/12/2018 SWAMP swamp-project.org 10
