The Waternomics project is a research project funded by the European Commission to explore how ICT can help households, companies, and cities manage water more efficiently. The project has involved developing new technologies and a methodology to provide personalized water consumption and availability information to help with decision making. Pilot tests of the approaches were conducted in Greece, Italy, and Ireland. The project has generated ideas for new products and services, pursued additional research, and involved partnerships between the nine participating organizations from four countries.

The need for an efficient Water Management System (WMS) is strongly felt by water  utilities, municipalities and by medium to large scale corporates that have to face every day with  problems dealing with water usage and supply [1]. Leveraging a sensor data network, an automated  system to implement fault detection in a water network at an early stage can be a valuable tool that  saves water, energy, time and money. This paper introduces a novel FDD (fault detection and  diagnosis) approach for water networks developed within the FP7 Waternomics Project by modeling  a water network in the simulation environment EPANET and applying an anomaly detection  algorithm named ADWICE (Anomaly Detection With fast Incremental ClustEring) [2] to real time  data of water flow and pressure to infer performance and operational anomalies. The method is  currently being implemented at the Linate Airport water network in Milan, and initial results are  presented in this paper.

Comme de nombreux secteurs, l’industrie automobile est confrontée à une transformation radicale sous l’action de la pression des défis que la société doit relever pour la prochaine décennie. C’est dans ce contexte de changements, que l’Université de Liège a réalisé le livre blanc « FUTURE MOVE » au sein du projet Pôle Automobile Européen (PAE). Outre la crise sanitaire, l’électrification, l’essor de la mobilité douce, l’automatisation de la conduite et la digitalisation, la décarbonisation du secteur automobile s’impose comme une des lignes de force à l’horizon 2030-2035. Ces transformations posent de nombreux défis techniques, juridiques ou sociologiques pour lesquels des solutions restent à trouver. En particulier, le livre blanc a identifié le développement des véhicules à hydrogène comme un des axes importants de la relance et de la décarbonisation des transports dans la Grande Région. Les constructeurs voient dans l’hydrogène un axe prometteur pour les véhicules lourds et les véhicules utilitaires. L’émergence de cette nouvelle motorisation va de paire avec la mise sur pied de la filière de production d’hydrogène vert et avec l’installation d’un réseau de distribution. Comment cette technologie sera-t-elle intégrée par l’industrie automobile européenne ? Quelles sont les opportunités pour les PME et la recherche universitaire ? Since its commercial launch in May 2018, over €160 million of SEA projects from 5 countries have been submitted to eQuad. Joule has now gone through multiple cycles of processing projects and matching them to investors. This webinar will therefore challenge Joule’s original hypothesis of the “finance gap” against real market experience post launch of the eQuad platform.

Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity server

This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).
