The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan campaign was launched in 2014 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to realize Mahatma Gandhi's dream of a clean and hygienic India. It aims to eliminate open defecation through construction of toilets and ensure scientific management of solid and liquid waste. Over 3 million government employees and students participated in the nationwide cleanliness drive on October 2nd, 2014 to mark the start of the campaign. The goals are to make India open defecation free and change people's behavior and awareness of sanitation practices through various programs.
