The Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning System was established after the devastating 2004 tsunami. Over the next 5 years, a network of agencies was set up to analyze earthquake data and transmit tsunami warnings. When an earthquake occurs, data is sent to warning centers in Hawaii and Japan for analysis. Warnings are then communicated to local agencies through radio, TV, SMS, email, mosques, and megaphones to coordinate evacuations and help people. The system aims to inform people so they understand tsunami risks and how to evacuate safely.
