Belfast City Council has established a European Unit to maximize EU funding opportunities and influence EU policy and legislation. To date, the Council has secured over €30 million in competitive EU funding for various projects promoting areas like lifelong learning, ICT, and reconciliation. Looking ahead, the Council aims to play a strategic role in shaping the region's engagement with EU programs and funding through the new Northern Ireland European Regional Forum. Key priorities for Belfast include tackling economic challenges through investment, jobs programs, and events, as well as strengthening communities through local development. Ongoing public sector reform also presents opportunities to enhance Belfast's place-shaping role internationally.
