Sustainable timber
1. Have I got your attention?
A Dinosaur’s guide to sustainable timber forestry in Queensland
2. To stop our forests going the way of the dinosaur, we need to
conserve our timber use and support sustainable forest and timber
industries.

In Queensland, sustainable timber management is about partnerships.
All timber products in Queensland are controlled by Queensland Parks
and Wildlife Service, (QPWS).
Parks and forests managed by the
Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service
include:
• national parks and regional
parks declared under the
Nature Conservation Act 1992;
• marine parks declared under the
Marine Parks Act 2004;
• fish habitat areas declared under the
Fisheries Act 1994;
• state forests and timber reserves
declared under the Forestry Act 1959;
• the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park (in
partnership with the Commonwealth).
4. Not all forests in Queensland are owned by the Queensland
Government. “Around 80%, more than 44 million hectares, of
Queensland forests are state owned, the remaining 10 million
hectares are privately owned forests. Most of Queensland’s timber
is sourced from our mature softwood plantations which are
dominated by exotic pine and native hoop pine” (Timber
Queensland). http://www.timberqueensla

5. Plantation timber in Queensland.
“The majority of Queensland's 234,000 hectare plantation estate
was established by the Queensland Government in various stages
between 1930 - 1980” (Timber Queensland, 2019)
