Organizations
• National Park of American Samoa
• American Samoa Power Authority
• American Samoa Environmental
Protection Agency
National Park of American Samoa
• The National Park of American Samoa has
known for protecting the environment as well
as all animal habitats, specifically plants and
animals that are beginning to extinct.
• It is not fully for the sustainability of the
environment but this is one of the
organizations that supports and help maintain
our sustainable environment.
American Samoa Power Authority
• American Samoa Power Authority (ASPA) is
similar to HELCO in Hilo. It is our power supply
here in American Samoa. Their donation to
keeping a sustainable environment is making sure
every resident and/or businesses are using
efficient light bulbs which help reduce watts used
as well as saving energy.
• Debit meters are also being introduced to control
the use of energy per day, per week, or per
month.
American Samoa Environmental
Protection Agency
• The ASEPA is one hundred percent funded by the U.S. EPA Region
9 through a EPA Consolidated Environmental Program Grant
awarded on a fiscal year budget period. At present, the Consolidated
Grant consists of the following categorical grant funding: Clean
Water Act (CWA), Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), Resource
Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), Clean Air Act (CAA),
Federal Fungicide, Insecticide and Rodenticide Act (FFIRA), and
the Beach Grant Act. To be eligible to receive this funding, the
ASEPA must meet specific environmental and technical mandates as
set forth in EPA law and regulations. ASEPA programs and activities
must include the planning, development, implementatin, and
enforcement strategies, objectives, and goals to accomplish this
mission.
American Samoa Environmental
Protection Agency
• The mission of the American Samoa EPA is to
provide regulatory services to promote clean
air, safe and clean drinking water and land free
of pollutants in order to protect the
environment and safeguard the quality of
natural resources upon which life on our
islands depends.
• Two divisions:
1) Water Division
- Faauuga Laitiiti took us at the Lyon’s Park where
they have been collecting samples of the water for
pesticides.
2) Air & Land Division
- Tumau Lokeni invited us to a clean-up event from
Utulei to Satala (East villages of American Samoa)
4 Different Types of
Programs
• Air & Land Program
– To keep a clean
environment.
– Help install solar panels in
businesses as well as
private homes.
• So far, 7 business buildings
and 1 private home has a
solar panel installed
– To keep the air clean as in
reducing the pollution
• By informing the public to
carpool, or catch local
buses, or walk if it is within
a walking distance.
• Technical Program
• Installing of solar panels within
business and/or private homes.
• Water Programs
– Piggeries
– Pesticides
ASEPA’s purpose is to ensure that :
• All residents of American Samoa are protected from
significant risks to human health and the environment where
they live, learn and work.
• Efforts to reduce environmental risk are based on the best
available scientific information.
• American Samoa and Federal laws protection human health
and the environment are enforced fairly and effectively.
• Environmental protection is an integral consideration in
American Samoa and W.S. policies concerning natural
resources, human health, economic growth, energy,
transportation, agriculture, industry, and international trade,
and these factors are similarly considered in establishing
environmental policy.
• All parts of society – villages/communities,
individuals, business, and government, – have
access to accurate information sufficient to
effectively participate in managing human health
and environmental risks.
• Environmental protection contributes to making
our communities and ecosystems diverse,
sustainable and economically productive.
• American Samoa works with other states and
nations to protect the global environment.
Land Division (Clean Up Event)
Our clean up on June 14 from Utulei to Satala (villages on the East Side of American Samoa). Every last Saturday of
the month, ASEPA hosts a clean-up event that allows volunteers to help clean up particular areas in American
Samoa.
Water Division
(Lion’s Park)
Water Division – Lion’s park is one of the sites the ASEPA looks out for signs of pesticides. Mainly because on the top right photo is the lookout
for turtles and other living organisms that lives around that area. Since this park is one of the attractions where locals are to go picnic and relax,
it has become a fragile environment due to the community’s lack of concern for the animals and the environment as well.
Other Organizations
• •American Samoa Bar Association
• •American Samoa Community College
• •American Samoa Coral Reef Advisory Group
• •American Samoa Department of Commerce
• •American Samoa Government
• •American Samoa Historic Preservation Office
• •American Samoa Power Authority
• •Fagatele Bay National Marine Sanctuary
• •National Park of American Samoa (U.S. National Park Service)
• •National Weather Service Office (American Samoa)
• •United States Environmental Protection Agency
• •American Samoa Renewable Energy Committee
• ASEPA would not have completed their mission if it were not for the support of
all these organizations as listed above.

At present, the Consolidated Grant consists of the following categorical grant funding: Clean Water Act (CWA), Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), Clean Air Act (CAA), Federal Fungicide, Insecticide and Rodenticide Act (FFIRA), and the Beach Grant Act. To be eligible to receive this funding, the ASEPA must meet specific environmental and technical mandates as set forth in EPA law and regulations. ASEPA programs and activities must include the planning, development, implementatin, and enforcement strategies, objectives, and goals to accomplish this mission.
  • 6. Editor's Notes

  1. These are the organizations we first thought of during our “Brainstorming Session” in our first meeting. Throughout our research and findings, we continued to eliminate organizations that are partially within the goal we were projected for. Therefore led us to the last and only organization, ASEPA, that will be further discussed throughout this presentation.
