The presentation shows the importance of water conservation. It provides information on how we can conserve water at home. For example, fixing leaky faucets can help conserve water.
2. What is Water Conservation?
Conservation
Sources
Who is responsible
Global water consumption
Mainland U.S.
Hawaii
3. “Water conservation is any beneficial
reduction in water loss, use, or waste
as well as the preservation of water
quality.”

4. How do we get our water?

The Hydrologic Cycle
71% is salt
3% is fresh
5. The Oceans
78.8% of the yearly precipitation is released from the
world’s oceans.

8. Dams
Dams are built for purposes such as generating
hydroelectricity, creating recreational areas, minimizing
flood risks, diverting water for irrigation, and providing
water for towns and cities.
Dams are huge engineering projects that require vast
financial resources. For example, the construction of the
Itaipu Dam on the border of Brazil and Paraguay
(completed in 1984) cost around US$20 billion.
When the Hoover Dam was completed it was both the
world’s largest concrete structure and largest hydroelectric
power station.
10. Local Rainfall
Hilo is the wettest place in the United States with an
average of 130” of rain per year.
Oahu receives an average of 28” per year
Maui gets an average of 25” inches per year
Kauai is the 2nd wettest place in the United States. Mt.
Waialeale receiving 444” of rain per year.

20. Washing Cars
It can take up to 140 gallons of water to wash a car!

23. Natural Landscaping
Xeriscaping- landscaping and gardening in ways that
reduce or eliminate the need for supplemental water
from irrigation methods.
What are some ways to do this?
24. Bokashi
A unique kitchen composting system that can recycle
kitchen waste into an organic fertilizer.
Consists of wheat bran infused with a mix of beneficial
microbes

26. Bokashi= conserving water
Compost is rich in nuritents
Holds moisture and soluble minerals, providing the
support in which plants can flourish
No need to water plants as often
Not just rainfall, but a whole cycle that involves the ocean and terrrestrial cycling, explain the hydrologic cycle, and water on planet 71% salt, 3% fresh
the images of where the water is running from (mountains) and akaka falls will hit the point home..
Pro’s and cons of dams.
Discuss local rainfall and ask students where they have been on the islands and what they have experienced
Ask the kids if they use conservation practices and what they think they could do to help.
Let kids think about innovations and ways to conserve toilet water flow, even not flushing after urinating perhaps…
Ask about how many per household, have them do the math….haha they hate math..
Use nozzles that can be turned off.
Do they have leaky faucets….
How many students use catchment, what are the pro and cons of it…
Ask kids how they landscape, even tho we get plenty of water in hilo, there are dry places on the island that don’t get a lot of water
