Collaborating with students: Reflections on UCC Library co-creating learning ...
UCC Library launched its Library Learning Resources course on Canvas (the University’s VLE) at the start of the 2020 academic year. The course consists of seven, self-directed interdisciplinary modules which offer teaching to all students on information searching and Library resources. This talk outlines the key learnings from a 2021 summer project funded by the University’s Office of the Vice-President for Learning & Teaching.
The project involved Library staff collaborating with a diverse and inclusive group of students: to obtain feedback on the Library’s modules; implement improvements based on feedback; develop interactive assessments and content, allowing for the co-creation of learning experiences. The outcome of the project was a refined Library course which was more appealing and engaging. Library staff and students used H5P to co-create new interactive learning objects which help cement knowledge and allow for self-evaluation. An interactive, app-based scavenger hunt was also developed to provide an impactful first experience of UCC Library buildings for new students.

Ryan Mellor presented on various web publishing tools and how they can be used in education. He found Wikispace and Blogger most useful for inspiring student collaboration through blogging, responding to questions, and peer discussion. He enjoyed creating his own blog and looks forward to helping students create theirs. While exploring various tools, Ryan was inspired by their potential to engage students, though deciphering Wikis was challenging. He believes online learning can benefit self-motivated learners by allowing flexible pacing and interest-guided learning, as was his experience using Moodle. Ryan outlined projects using Wiki Spaces for character lessons, Pulse for organizing readings, a YouTube-featuring blog, and Glogster for multimedia posters.

Kelly McCaffrey presented on wikis, blogs, and web publishing tools for her final course project in August 2011. She found Wikispaces, Kid Blog, and Animoto to be the most useful tools to incorporate into her teaching. While creating the final presentation on Google Docs posed some challenges, Moodle was an easy to use platform for the online course. McCaffrey feels more knowledgeable about online resources she can use to improve communication with students, parents, and colleagues.

population expansion, and economic progress, the effects on natural ecosystems are becoming

to significant land degradation, adversely affecting the region's land cover.
Therefore, human intervention has significantly influenced land use patterns over many
centuries, evolving its structure over time and space. In the present era, these changes have
accelerated due to factors such as agriculture and urbanization. Information regarding land use and
cover is essential for various planning and management tasks related to the Earth's surface,
providing crucial environmental data for scientific, resource management, policy purposes, and
diverse human activities.
Accurate understanding of land use and cover is imperative for the development planning

- 2. Introduction to the Projects The following slides will review the projects from the decision phase to the problems encountered, to the results. Also discussed will be things to consider for the future.

- 4. Primary sources for Projects The first decision was to choose whether or not to elaborate on the library wiki already established or to create a new one. Since “project-based –learning” is an initiative in our school, it seemed timely to begin a wiki that would focus on primary resources.
- 5. Primary Sources for Projects Another consideration: Since I am the media specialist in my school and soon learning about the vast collection of primary source material at the Library of Congress, I thought it important to provide links for staff and students in this material.
- 6. Primary Sources for Projects Not a problem but a consideration: After looking at our samples, I decided to try to create an interesting glog to appear on the first page of my new wikispace. Fortunately the glogster code uploaded properly and the links worked!
- 7. Primary Sources for Projects It took some time to locate suitable links to include on the navigation side, however these primary source links should be helpful to staff & students.

Notes from the Hiatusphere The first problem or consideration was to decide whether to elaborate on the library blog, Mowery Memos already established, although, not recently updated; or to choose to create a new one and risk duplicating material. After some thought I decided to create a new blog entirely dedicated to presenting highlights of my sabbatical year. The idea both excited me and gave me more purpose to document and share what I learn during the year.

- 11. Blog: Notes… Results: After posting my 4 entries I received positive responses from colleagues. This blog will be relatively easy to maintain and update as the year progresses. I will be interested to see what material will be accumulated by the end of the year and I may survey those who join the blog.
- 12. ANIMOTO: Library Highlights from the Year
- 13. Animoto Considerations: What would be the subject-matter? How can I advertise the library in a positive and more vibrant way? How can I easily demonstrate the highlights of what occurred in the LMC this year? All of these seemed to lead to the creation of an Animoto related to the library’s activities.
- 14. Final Presentation Online Considerations: Which program could I utilize effectively? My first decision was to try Prezi which I like, however, too many problems occurred and I think I need to have “hands-on” help with this. The tutorials were ok but I need more one-on-one instruction.
- 15. Final Thoughts: I totally enjoyed the structure of the class. This was my first experience with Moodle and I think it works easily and well. I liked that we met as a class first. It gave me a focus and perspective to go ahead. I am very happy with the web products I created and I feel that all will be used by my staff and students These are great tools for library media specialists and my favorite is the wikispace.
