Smart cities | Smarter citizens Vienna - 25 Nov 2014 lrTim Jones
A keynote at the Zero Emission Cities Conference in Vienna focused on shifts in focus of smart cities. Key contrast is made between what is being embedded in city infrastructures to make them more intelligent and efficient vs. how people in cities can use, share and interpret data to make more intelligent decisions.
Talk is split into three parts:
What we say about the future of cities from the first Future Agenda programme in 2010
An overview of some of the key developments and collaborations that have taken place since
Some key questions that we see are being asked about citizen engagement that we will explore in the second future agenda programme in 2015

The future of cities: creative solutions for a brighter urban life Individual mobility is as simple as taking a walk. But the more that humans have to live in shared spaces, the more mobility becomes about technology—powering transit, but also coordinating it. And nowhere is this linkage as vivid as in cities.
Tomorrow's cities will be shaped by human-centric technology solutions—more ""Iron Man"" and less ""Skynet."" Over the coming decades, we'll see the proliferation of autonomous, connected, electric, shared transportation systems that will increase, rather than decrease, the importance of superb mass-transit systems and multi-modal options for getting from point A to point B. We'll create public/private partnerships, with policymakers at the local level creating markets for new technologies, infrastructure development, and advancing new thinking like mileage-based user fees. At the same time, denser cities will blur the lines between where we live and work, our energy consumption and production, and how we get around.
Ultimately, this upheaval creates vast new opportunities for business model innovation and startup wealth creation. Join URBAN-X Managing Director Micah Kotch for his view from the frontlines of urban mobility."

Auckland! How smart you are! Obviously, this presentation is to talk about Smart City. Even though there are many initiatives to promote smart city, is it really beneficial to us? In this talk, an overview of a smart city and various key technologies, mainly focusing on ICT (information and communication technology), will be introduced. The pros and cons of smart city will be discussed. Examples of Smart City technologies and programs in various cities, including Auckland, will be presented together with their comparisons. The 2nd part of the talk will introduce Prof. Chong’s current research on smart mobility which is one of the key technologies for future smart city.

The talk commences with example startling data to seek audience attention & participation. Cities are a fulcrum of ever growing population migration, this presents various issues that must be faced promptly so as to allow the next generation an opportunity to define their own built environment (for living, working, and playing). The ecosystem of groups involved is presenting new opportunities for entrepreneurs and new partnerships. The talk ends with a brief look-back at the technology that has been developed over the last 50 years, before posing a set of new questions and opening for discussion.

The way we purchase products and services has changed. The way we engage with our customers has changed too. This is not only relevant in products but also in services and how we utilise subscription and cloud based platforms.
We experience our 3D world through a series of 2D interfaces. Our maps break down data into layer upon layer of geospatial information. We don't need to do that anymore, we can escape these flatlands and enjoy a dynamic experience where our real-world and digital world are intrinsically similar.

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:

The Internet of Things (IoT)
The IoT is NOT:
▪ A technology
▪ A platform
It is a design
language
20. 20
For each scenario work you
need 3 things:
▪ A set of ‘things’ (devices,
sensors, applications)
▪ An internet-like
connection
▪ Cloud-based platform
that connects people,
processes and systems
IoT
21. 21
▪ Globally, 1 million people move to cities
every week
▪ 66% of worlds population will live in urban
areas by 2050
▪ Africa has the fastest urbanization rate in
the world
▪ 70% of energy is used in cities
▪ By 2030 Africa will sit on the largest
economically active population in the world
IoT and Urban Design
22. 22
What does this mean?
▪ Greater citizen engagement
▪ 30% in energy savings
▪ 50% cut in water consumption
▪ Lower crime rates
▪ 30% dip in traffic congestion
▪ Safer roadways
▪ Provide for driverless vehicles in the future
▪ Benefit from a shared economy
IoT and Urban Design
23. 23
▪ Infrastructure
▪ From sewage systems and water treatment to the way we provide energy
▪ More efficient and eco-friendly
▪ Rely on crowd sourcing to make things better for people
▪ No longer consume energy based on estimation, be well defined and calculated
▪ Demand response smart-grid
▪ Buildings and architecture
▪ Buildings will create networks
▪ Sensors that provide in-depth analysis of what is happening in the building
▪ Save lives when natural disasters hit
IoT and Urban Design
24. 24
▪ Public spaces
▪ No longer is urban space designed and fixed in stone – it’s a different way of assembling a
city
▪ Impact of drones on air space for e.g.
▪ Safe surveillance for public safety, crime prevention etc
▪ Lighting, sprinklers and more
▪ All about sensors
▪ Smart sensors for light, water, safety etc

OPEN DATA
If [governments] prove capable of embracing a world of disruptive change, subjecting their structures to the levels of
transparency and efficiency that will enable them to maintain their competitive edge, they will endure. If they cannot evolve,
they will face increasing trouble.
—Prof. Klaus Schwab (2016)
Government Data should be:
▪ Open
▪ Freely Accessible
▪ Presented in a format that is comparable and usable
▪ Released in a timely manner
Government benefits for doing this:
▪ Improve public accountability and efficiency
▪ Real social and economic benefits
▪ Data can be accessed will drive entrepreneurship, innovation and social problem solving
▪ Anti-corruption efforts on making public all spending, faster service delivery of health and education for
