The talk ends with a brief look-back at the technology that has been developed over the last 50 years, before posing a set of new questions and opening for discussion.

My presentation illustrates an on-going study in the field of Smart cities’ evaluation. The analysis starts from a revised notion of triple helix considering that Civil society plays a prominent role toward the realization of sustainable development in cities (Etzkowitz and Zhou, 2006).
In order to assess the connections between Smart city development and this institutionalization of the Triple Helix, an Analytic Network Process model has been developed. This interrelated model is used for investigating the relations between smart cities components (smart governance; smart economy; smart people; smart living; smart environment), actors (Universities, Government, Industry and Civil Society ) and policy visions derived from the “Urban Europe” Joint Programme Initiatives, i.e. strategies to which the smart cities are moving to (Connected City, Entrepreneurial City, Liveable City and Pioneer City).

On 6 and 7 June 2013, André Bouffioux, CEO of Siemens Belgium-Luxembourg, presented our Siemens’ view on how Smart Cities will develop and generate new business. He made this presentation during the European Young Innovator Forum’s unique Unconvention in Brussels, where young Europeans with innovative ideas and those who will inspire, guide and support them, were brought together.
Across the UK we are seeing more and more examples of smart city transformation. Key 'smart' sectors utilised by such Cities include transport, energy, health care, water and waste. Against the current background of economic, social, security and technological changes caused by the globalization and the integration process, cities in the UK face the challenge of combining competitiveness and sustainable urban development simultaneously.
A smart city is a place where the traditional networks and services are made more efficient with the use of digital and telecommunication technologies, for the benefit of its inhabitants and businesses.
With this vision in mind, the European Union is investing in ICT research and innovation and developing policies to improve the quality of life of citizens and make cities more sustainable in view of Europe's 20-20-20 targets.
The smart city concept goes beyond the use of ICT for better resource use and less emissions. It means smarter urban transport networks, upgraded water supply and waste disposal facilities, and more efficient ways to light and heat buildings.
And it also encompasses a more interactive and responsive city administration, safer and secure public spaces.
Smart Cities UK lead the way on addressing the best practice examples on smart transformation from across Cities within the United Kingdom whilst disseminating guidance and information transformation within waste, energy, transport and other key smart sectors.
This presentation forecasts how urban planning and technology is shaping our cities through smart city initiatives. Ultimate objective is to make people happy and provide impactful experiences for people living in cities and solving cities challenges. Technology is only an enabler but people come first. These initiatives should be driven by outcomes and what cities want to achieve and become.

This is my January 2016 presentation to the United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development as part of their preparation of a report on Smart Cities. The idea of a “Smart City” (or town, or region, or community) is 20 years old; but it has so far achieved comparatively little. The vast majority of Smart City initiatives to date are pilot projects funded by research and innovation grants: there are very, very few sustainable, repeatable solutions yet. This is partly because Smart Cities is usually discussed as a technology trend not an economic and political imperative; and so it has not won the support of the highest level of political leadership, and the widest level of community and citizen engagement. In a few cases where that level of leadership and engagement does exist, however, some cities have shown that existing policy tools and spending streams - such as procurement practises, planning frameworks and property investment - can be been used to create sustainable projects and programmes that can deliver real change.

Open Data initiatives are increasingly considered as defining elements of emerging smart cities. However, few studies have attempted to provide a better understanding of the nature of this convergence and the impact on both domains. This paper presents findings from a detailed study of 18 open data initiatives across five smart cities – Barcelona, Chicago, Manchester, Amsterdam and Helsinki. Specifically, the study sought to understand how open data programs are shaped by the different smart cities contexts and concomitantly what kinds of innovations are enabled by open data in these cities. The findings highlight the specific impacts of open data innovation on the different smart cities domains, governance of the cities, and the nature of datasets available in the open data ecosystem.

In this webinar we present a first ever definition for an Open Smart City and the Open Smart Cities Guide V1.0, informed by research conducted in Canada and an examination of international best practices. In the context of Canada’s Smart Cities Challenge and the public conversation regarding Sidewalk Labs, this webinar gave us timely opportunity to receive public feedback on the definition and structure of the guide. The webinar refers to tools, practices, policies, recommendations and legal frameworks to guide Canadian municipalities toward co-creating Open Smart Cities with their residents.

Back in 2015, the U.S. Department of Transportation (U.S. DOT), under the leadership of Secretary Anthony Foxx, has
leveraged nearly $350 million in public and private funds for smart city and advanced transportation technologies. Building on
Beyond Traffic 2045, the Smart City Challenge provided a spark for cities looking to revolutionize their transportation systems
to help improve people’s lives. Through the Smart City Challenge, the Department committed up to $40 million to one winning
city. In response, cities leveraged an additional $500 million in private and public funding to help make their Smart City visions
real. And, in October 2016, Secretary Foxx announced an additional $65 million in grants to support community-driven
advanced technology transportation projects in cities across America, including 4 of the finalists in the Smart City Challenge.
By challenging American cities to use emerging transportation technologies to address their most pressing problems, the
Smart City Challenge aimed to spread innovation through a mixture of competition, collaboration, and experimentation.
But the Smart City Challenge was about more than just technology. We called on mayors to define their most pressing
transportation problems and envision bold new solutions that could change the face of transportation in our cities by meeting
the needs of residents of all ages and abilities; and bridging the digital divide so that everyone, not just the tech-savvy, can be
connected to everything their city has to offer.
Big data: uncovering new mobility patterns and redefining planning practicesMickael Pero
Using representations and data that are digital, we can create images about what happens where and when in cities, including mobility patterns that remained unaccounted until now. If properly analysed, big data for mobility can radically improve the socioeconomic and environmental analysis of public and sustainable transport. This session will discuss how big data is affecting mobility in terms of new travel behaviour and transport planning. At the user level, the relations between social networks, social media usage and travel behaviour in EU countries will be discussed. Scientific insight on the social media usage of millennial students in EU countries to understand their impact on social activities and mobility in urban areas will be presented. At the planer level, responses to changes in mobility patterns or unaccounted needs given by the analysis of public transport smart data will be presented. Advances on an integrated accessibility index will be discussed as a way for policy makers to improve current transport planning practices. Yet, big data in transport is not immune from some problems, especially those relating to statistical validity, bias and incorrectly imputed causality. This point will be discussed alongside liability, since Big data is gathered and manipulated by many different stakeholders. The proposed panel discussion therefore aims to provide to the audience a clear understanding on ways in which big data affects travel behaviour and transport planning, while accounting for data quality and pan European standardisation aspects.

This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes.
