This document provides summaries of several sources that will be used in an essay arguing that marijuana use can be dangerous. The sources discuss topics like the mental health risks of marijuana use, its link to respiratory diseases like COPD, and how secondhand smoke affects children with asthma. Statistical data and definitions from the sources will likely be incorporated into the essay.

This is just a peer-reviewed journal explaining how some adults want to quit smoking
marijuana, but start to develop depression or other mental distress. This journal also has some
very intriguing facts about the United States that are correlated to marijuana usage. The Journal
also defined vague words such as “Frequent use”, and “Quit behavior” in a very unique style.
The Journal finished up the paper with some supporting evidence, tables, etc. The final
comments also explain very helpful information including: contributors, possible conflicts of
interest, and role of funding sources.
Where and Why: In my FYS class, I was shown how to use EBSCO HOST and I was also
shown how to search for peer reviewed articles. I knew that my paper would basically be about
persuading the thought that marijuana can be dangerous if inhaled. This journal stood out from
the others because they had multiple charts, explanations, and numerical data.
Integration: This Journal has a lot to explain about marijuana, so there is no doubt that I’ll use
this journal on my essay. I will probably include a number of statistics from this journal, along
with the results. Chances are that I will explain things the way this journal explains them. For
example, setting allotted factual evidence for the phrase “Frequent use”. All-in-all, the style of
the journal was very statistics-based; which is what I am trying to portray in my essay.

This is also a peer-reviewed journal that has less to do with marijuana, and more to do
with a specific disease it causes. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a
respiratory disease that involves the long-term presence of asthma, and chronic bronchitis;
mostly due to inhaled contaminants such as dust, pollution, and many other carcinogens. This
journal explains how COPD is a large factor of the lives of smokers today including, cigarette,
marijuana, and almost any other type of smoke. This Journal also explains how CCQ scores
compare between smokers, non-smokers, marijuana smokers, and another group of “mixed”
smokers. That is to say, the journal also explains what a CCQ score is, and how it is determined.
Where and Why: I found this journal on EBSCO HOST which wasn’t too much of a hassle. I
literally just searched all medical databases for the keywords “COPD”, and “lung damage”
which gave me multiple results. After searching through them for about an hour I found this
journal, which was outstandingly better than its competition.
Integration: I believe that I may dedicate an entire page to COPD and use this entire journal for
supporting evidence. Miravitlles did an amazing job of combining his data, methods, and
results! I will probably not use his style of writing considering that this is more of an essay
instead of a scientific research paper. The main use behind this source would have to be
explaining what COPD is, and how it harms people. There are other things that I will use such
as the quantitative data.

3. Neogi, Tina, Jon O. Neher, and Sarah Safranek. "How Does Smoking In The Home Affect

This is an article out of the Journal of Family Practice which essentially gives a question,
and then follows up with an answer, some evidence, and recommendations. The question of this
article is how does smoking (of any kind, marijuana, cigarette, and others) in the home can affect
children with asthma. As stated before, the article does explain a number of things including;
age of children in the study, types of tests being performed, results of the tests, and the timeframe
in which the results were gathered. The article also involves a small amount of statistics that
seem to slant towards smoking is causing more severe asthma effects on children. Although, the
final recommendation on the article basically says stop smoking in a house, because it’s bad for
you and even worse for children around you.
Where and Why: I found this article on the Academic Search Premier. I am probably going to
use this article as supporting evidence of smoking (in general) isn’t good for people diagnosed
with asthma. This article is very statistics orientated, so I will probably use some statistics from
it.
Integration: This article will be used as supporting evidence against the usage of marijuana’s
effects on the lungs. I will use data from this source, along with some definitions it gives. I am
not going to explain everything systematically; like the authors of this paper did. Although, I
will stick to the true nature of the Q(uestion) and A(nswer) format of the article. All in all, I will use
this paper for supporting data such as numbers, outcomes, and results.

This article explains a broad overview of multiple lung disorders, symptoms, and ways to
treat them. The three main topics it is explaining are COPD, Asthma, and Chronic Bronchitis;
all of which are respiratory diseases. Asthma causes extreme shortness of breath due to
inflammation and oversensitivity of the airways. Chronic Bronchitis is essentially coughing up
mucus many times in a trimonthly period. COPD is an often deadly mixture of Asthma and
Chronic Bronchitis.
Where and Why: I have always known about COPD, asthma, and chronic bronchitis since my
youth because my mother and multiple distant family members have been diagnosed with it. I
found this article on the Academic Search Premiere. I will use this multiple times in my essay,
so I can explain all three diseases in full detail, and so I can show that I have sufficient
knowledge of the three main diseases that are caused by smoking.
Integration: I really like the multiple subsections of diseases in this article; I will most likely
implement some form of section-system in my essay. I am going to use a lot of information
from this article to help back my argument. This will help explain the three main diseases that I
am going to be writing about in my essay. Along with the help of this article I could explain
some treatments that the article advises. Chances are I will explain 4 pages, one for each disease,
and the other one for treatment advice via this article.

This peer-reviewed clinical journal explains the extent of marijuana use is across the
world. It explains, in depth, the effects of marijuana use on the body, including main systems.
The journal also explains multiple tests such as: Genotoxicity, mutagenicity, and oncogenesis
(basically tests for the presence of cancer). There are other very unique subjects that are
explained, such as: the correlation between bone density and marijuana users, Psychiatric, and
social disorders. Finally there are conclusions of the toxicology report.
Where and Why: I chose this journal because of its extent of research. What made this journal
stand out from the rest is the fact that it wasn’t one sided.For example it stated that marijuana
users had increased bone density;meanwhile having decreased lung density.
Integration: I will use this source mainly for the results of respiratory and psychiatric effects.
Although I would use the effects on the bones, and other positive effects, but that would seem
counter-productive to my entire argument. I might actually incorporate it into the essay and
compare it to the effects of bone density of drinking your daily value of vitamin D from milk.
Even if I did do that it would seem like I was using a lot of satire, which, may help my argument
out in the long run. All in all I will use this source very generously in an attempt to help
persuade the audience toward my opinion.

6. Tashkin, Donald P. "Does Smoking Marijuana Increase The Risk Of Chronic Obstructive

This Medical Journal gives multiple points about marijuana use and COPD risks. This
Journal also gives statistics about how often marijuana is smoked around the world. More to the
point, this journal explains how over the last few years there may be a correlation between
COPD and smoking marijuana. It shows large amounts of data from measuring lung function
and collecting cross-sectional studies between marijuana and tobacco. The journal also added
some key points in the top right corner explaining how the test groups were older people, who
were more prone to COPD instead of younger people who would most likely not develop COPD.
Where and Why: I found this on the Academic Search Premier. I found out after reading this
source was unbiased as well. There were multiple points in this article that was very helpful and
explained clearly.
Integration: I will integrate multiple things from this journal, including most data from the tests
performed. Most of this will be implemented on a separate page about correlation with
marijuana and COPD. I don’t like the flow of this journal because everything seems so cluttered
together. I will try to interpret and summarize most of this journal to limit confusion among the
audience. Finally I will use this to explain how inhaling any small particles, including smoke
from anything, can be damaging to your lungs.
