While finishing up Volume Six of the History of Cartography, I wrote and self-published a personal history titled Adventures in Academic Cartography: A Memoir. This presentation describes the project with the aim of encouraging others to share their own experiences in book form. Topics covered include organizing the book's content into ten largely thematic chapters; using the family financial diary instead of budgeting, we slavishly record every expense to verify activities and dates; hiring an experienced copy editor to provide the much-needed second set of eyes; adding a picture gallery; coping with Microsoft Word's limitations for page layout, including its propensity to down-sample images; designing and creating my own cover; publishing with Amazon using my own imprint, Bar Scale Press; preparing files for uploading to CreateSpace, Amazon's print-on-demand subsidiary; pricing affordable print and Kindle editions; orchestrating a low-energy promotion that actually got some decent book reviews; and making minor revisions.

For the past five years, Kent has led several data visualizations programs at Google. He currently focuses on creating accessible data experiences that provide value and insights to everyone, regardless of their ability. In this session, Kent spotlights key lessons learned while building accessible visualizations for Google products like Search, Fitbit, Loon, Quantum AI and Cloud. He discusses techniques for generating awareness, building a community of experts and making a business case for data accessibility. Kent shares his group's accessibility-first approach to design and how standards can be used to empower teams to create better data experiences.

Humanizing the Digital Experience
Higher Ed websites are beasts! With thousands of pages and decentralized publishing, it can be difficult for users to complete tasks or even find the right information. It's just as much a challenge of the central web teams to help keep the websites and digital channels organized and compliant with accessibility requirements and authoritative data sources. What if we started over? How would the design of your homepage, and most importantly, your search box and page look like? Most likely it'd be more focused on people, programs, places and policies than the announcement of a new institute. Find out how accessibility and search/findability are narrowing together and how Higher Ed sites need to minimize their navigation and amplify search (leveraging existing metadata for voice, text, etc...) in the 2020s and beyond. Letterkenny GIFs included.
So, you hate the NSA collecting information about you. And you hate when brands track your purchases to sell you more stuff. But do you hate the idea of a smart city?
Smart cities, with their “intelligent urban infrastructures”, promise greater civic participation, reduced waste, less traffic and a more capable government. But what are citizens sacrificing in return? How much do we want our cities to think for us? And are there benefits to “dumb cities” and their inconveniences?
In this battle-it-out presentation, Marissa Gluck and Christine Outram will fight to the finish about whether intelligent urban infrastructures are really capable of creating more livable, sustainable and economically viable cities.
Christine, will play the role of techno-determinist, convinced of technologies ability to improve our cities, without eroding civil liberties. Meanwhile, Marissa will play devils advocate, arguing that these new technologies will erase privacy, chance, serendipity and the beauty that comes from reduced automation and control.

Data augmented ethnography: using big data and ethnography to explore candi...Salla-Maaria Laaksonen
In this paper we propose data augmented ethnography as a novel mixed methods approach to combine ethnographic, qualitative, observations with social media data collection and computational analysis. Using two brief studies on online interaction as examples we discuss the benefits and challenges of the combination of these two perspectives. We posit that the observations made in the qualitative phase can be quantified and hypothesized together with the data collected later during the analysis stage. Through our case studies we aim to shed light to the differences apparent on the party level and seek to understand how candidates, based on their parties political standing, differ in terms of interactivity. We ask, what insights does a mixed-method approach combining ethnographic observations to computational social science offer to the study of interactivity and its many pregnant forms? To answer this question, we use a large data set collected from different social media platforms before and during the 2015 Parliament Election in Finland. This data consists of both textual data including all candidate updates and the conversations they elicited, as well as field notes written and collected during ethnographic field work period before the elections.

Lift14 Workshop Liquid Democracy as a Service (LDaaS) : Rebooting DemocracyUniversity of Geneva
Liquid Democracy is increasingly emerging as an opportunity and alternative to the increasing problems facing our participative environments. Also known as delegative democracy, the advantages of such approaches lies in the ability to instrument through ICT dynamic management and delegation mechanisms instead of traditional static representative models. The goal of this workshop is to launch a challenge to be initiated within the Lift14 conference time and followed up afterwards on an "as a Service" model. Ultimately, the plan is to launch a new service : Liquid Democracy as a Service (LDaaS) for everyone.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. He is known for his dynamic presentations in CI/CD and application security integrated in software delivery lifecycle.
Gopinath Rebala
Gopinath Rebala is the CTO of OpsMx, where he has overall responsibility for the machine learning and data processing architectures for Secure Software Delivery. Gopi also has a strong connection with our customers, leading design and architecture for strategic implementations. Gopi is a frequent speaker and well-known leader in continuous delivery and integrating security into software delivery.

Securing your Kubernetes cluster_ a step-by-step guide to success !KatiaHIMEUR1
Today, after several years of existence, an extremely active community and an ultra-dynamic ecosystem, Kubernetes has established itself as the de facto standard in container orchestration. Thanks to a wide range of managed services, it has never been so easy to set up a ready-to-use Kubernetes cluster.
However, this ease of use means that the subject of security in Kubernetes is often left for later, or even neglected. This exposes companies to significant risks.
In this talk, I'll show you step-by-step how to secure your Kubernetes cluster for greater peace of mind and reliability.
