Survey 1: Billboard Results
Zoe Toase
How likely are you to research something you saw on a billboard?
I asked this question because often a lot of
billboards go unnoticed. As a few people said they
rarely research billboards, 16.67%, this means there
is a gap in the market to appeal to these people.
Obviously, there have been no billboards that have
inspired them as of yet therefore if I take on board
there feedback from the survey they may be more
likely to research my billboard as it will be built
upon their interests. Half of the people taking my
survey said they sometimes looks up a billboard and
a large 33.33% said they are likely too. This is very
helpful information as I now know I will need to
include some form of contact on my billboard. As
my audience is very young, it would be most
beneficial if I included the website or social media
handles as this is a more relatable way for young
people to find out more about a brand. As no one is
very likely to look up a billboard, I feel I need to
make mine quite mysterious, ambiguous but
intriguing so that they have a reason to look it up
and find out more.
Do you prefer landscape or portrait billboards?
I asked this question because there is a lot of
variation between the canvas size of a billboard.
Quite a few are a4 poster size such as the ones
at bus stops whereas others are landscapes such
as the ones on roadsides.
From the results, you can see there is a clear
divide between which is most popular and that
is definitely landscape with a percentage of
83.33%. Due to this large vote, I will definitely
have my billboard landscape. I feel it is very
traditional this way and therefore will be
appealing.
What conventions do you think a billboard needs in order to be memorable?
I wanted to know what stood out the most on a
billboard and what would make people most likely to
want to find out more therefore I asked the question
what conventions do you think billboard needs in order
to be memorable. I want the audience to remember my
brand wherever they are so that they go home and
research it and then purchase the magazine, otherwise
my billboard would just be pointless.
The results show that half of the people who took my
survey think that a billboard needs to have a unique
style in order to be memorable. I think this will be quite
difficult as I am only making a 2D one however I will try
to incorporate different image effects and graphics to
make my billboard look professional and quirky. The use
of images also plays an important role in the attraction
of a billboard with a vote percentage of 33.33%. I will
therefore either use an image background for my
billboard, or incorporate numerous images in a shutter
blind effect. Lots of text was the least popular as I feel
this could bore the reader which is why it received no
votes. It would also take people a long time to read the
billboard if it had a lot of text whereas its purpose is
primarily a passing glance object. Bright colours
received some appreciation however not enough to be
significant. I think even if the colours were bright, it is
the context and concept that people are attracted too
therefore the colour is not as important in this instance.
I will however make sure that my colour scheme fits in
with my house image and remains the same as in my
magazine.
Do you notice predominantly image billboards or predominantly text?
I asked this question so I could decide what to
centralise my billboard on, whether that be text or
image. The results show that 50% of my audience
notice billboards with predominantly images rather
than text. There was however a large amount (33.33)
of people who said that they are both equally
noticeable and therefore this suggests it depends on
the style. As text did get the lowest amount of results
however, I will predominantly base my billboard on
images, and will use these as the central focus to
promote my brand. I will however include text such as
my magazine name, slogan , sub-genres and contact
details.
Summary of what I should include on my billboard/create based on potential audience
feedback
• Put research details on my billboard such as
website or social medias
• Landscape layout
• Unique style with images
• Predominantly images but with accompanying
amount of text
