Surat Quraysh
Background Story:
Because of this duaa, Allah gave Quraysh the
honor of being custodians of the house
Ibraheem built, the Kaaba, but look what
they’ve done to it. Look how they violated it’s
sanctity with their idols.
In the previous Surah (Surat Al-
Feel) Allah describes how he
protected Quraysh from Abraha’s
army of elephants.
Allah gave Quraysh many blessings because
of the dua of their father Prophet Ibraheem
(AS) many years before them.
He prayed for the two things the people of
Mecca would need to survive.
Oh Allah please give this land
safety and give its people plenty
of fruits
In this Surah, Allah (S) describes all the favors given to Quraysh- power, safety and
plentiful fruits - rare blessings for those living in the harsh deserts of Arabia.
“Aleef” means something that you know very
well and you’re comfortable with. Quraysh
were used to feeling secure.
Their tribal name “Quraysh” means
“little shark” This name referred to how
mighty they were, because sharks eat
everything but never get eaten.
Allah made Quraysh known to the neighboring
area. When they saw that Allah destroyed
Abraha, but left Quraysh untouched, they said:
This means Allah wants Quraysh to stay
in charge of the Kaaba. We better not mess
with them!
Allah gave them this protection.
For the familiar security of Quraysh
Their familiar Winter and Summer journey
When Quraysh travelled they did so with a lot
of luggage bc they travelled for business. Their
luggage sat on top of the camel, so it made them
an obvious target for highway robbers.
Where were they going to sell their goods?
In the Summer they would go to Syria,
(wasn’t too hot)- they sold their goods
and bought new goods. By then, Winter
was approaching (short season in arabian
peninsula) so they would go to Yemen
(wasn’t too cold) . There they sold and
purchased more goods…bringing it all
back to Mecca.
Despite carrying large loads of merchandise across the
desert, they never got robbed. Allah opened this
prosperous trade route for them, giving them economic
stability.
Despite these blessings, they continued to pray to the
idols for all their needs, rejecting Allah as the true
provider and protector.
The reason Allah gave them all these
blessings is so they would fulfill their job
of caring for His house…The care-takers
of the Kaaba are supposed to show the
best example of how to worship Allah
sincerely, but they became the worst
example.
Despite having so many blessings, they
refused to share it with the poor and
continuing stealing from the orphans.
These examples will be mentioned later
in Surat Al- Maun….
Allah gave them great authority but they didn’t
even worship Him- The Lord of the House!
So they should worship the Master of this house
The One who fed them so they wouldn’t
starve and gave them safety so they
wouldn’t live in fear.
As Quraysh continued to be ungrateful, and commit bad
actions, Allah began taking away their blessings a little
at a time.
He hits them with problem after problem.
Examples: The drought and dukhan (smoke) that hit
Mecca affects their economy. They are defeated in wars
with the Muslims, and they begin to lose their reputation
among the neighboring tribes and in the region.
