2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

2. Context of Surat Al-Humaza
The Surah directly before Al-Humaza, is Al-Asr.
In Al-Asr, Allah states that people are in loss.
In Al- Humaza, Allah describes the characteristics of those people.
The Surah directly after Al-Humaza is Al- Feel - in which Allah
describes an event that took place to protect the sacred Kaaba.
In Al-Humaza, Allah describes something more important than
the Kaaba itself.
3. Destruction is for every Humaza & Lumaza
Humaza: Insulting others to their face
Insulting with facial expressions
Insulting with body language
Lumaza: Talking about others behind their back
2 qualities
that are
hurtful to
others
Ayah #1
4. If you’re walking to the table with a knife , wouldn’t you be careful?
You would, because you have something sharp in your hand that may
hurt someone.
Well we all have something sharp in our mouths-
our tongue!
The tongue can do serious damage, so we have to
be careful with it.
So, Allah is saying HUMAZA & LUMAZA are both equally bad.
Talking behind someone’s back damages their reputation, & talking to
their face damages their heart.
THINK ABOUT IT:
At least I
didn’t say it
in front of
At least I said
it to their face
5. Why is this such a big sin in Islam?
Story Time:
Once the Prophet (S) was making Tawaf around the Kaaba. As he walked around it, the Sahaba
heard him saying: “How beautiful you are. How pure you are. How sacred and dignified you
are.” Then he said: “But the dignity of a Believer is more sacred to Allah (S) than you!”
The Prophet spent his entire life freeing this Kaaba. Many Sahaba died to restore it - to continue
the mission of P. Ibraheem…. And yet, our dignity is more dear to Allah. The Prophet was
teaching us that we can’t love the Kaaba/can’t love Allah, if we don’t treat others with dignity.
What is DIGNITY?
How do we protect someone’s Dignity ?
6. (By not stealing from each other, hurting physically or emotionally, backbiting, or damaging their reputation.)
WHAT IS DIGNITY?
Being Worthy/honored
We all have same worth, regardless of age, race, or status..
Respect is earned, but dignity is God given. It’s a right.
Allah created us with dignity. We owe each other to protect each others’
dignity.
7. Everyone’s feelings are sacred/special…
Would you ever think to go the sacred kaba and use foul language??
Would you ever think to go to a masjid and throw garbage everywhere??
NO…!!
So why would we allow garbage to come out
of our mouths when Allah views our dignity
as being more sacred than the Kaaba itself??
THINK about how hypocritical it would be to say SALAM
(peace) to your friend when you meet him, then talk about him
behind his back. That is NOT peaceful at all.
Side Note: These kinds of things happen
when we don’t have a higher goal in life. We
have nothing better to do than talk about
others
8. The first ayah described those who make themselves feel
better by putting others down.
This Ayah describes:
1. The ones who make themselves feel better by what they
own/how much money they have.
2. The ones who care about nothing but gathering “Stuff”….
More money More clothes More jewelry
More cars More houses MORE... MORE... MORE
The one who collected money and counted it
Ayah #2
9. Is it OK to like nice things?
The Ayah is referring to individuals who will do anything to have everything
they see. They have to have the newest version of everything: the latest
phone, the latest car…So they collect their money in a wrong/illegal/haram
way. Then make others feel bad when they don’t have the same.
Enjoying life’s beauty is an inclination that was put inside of us when we
were created.
The luxuries of life are a preview of the luxuries we will enjoy in Jenna….
There’s nothing wrong with liking nice things.
10. He thinks his wealth will allow him to live forever
I’m on top of the
World! All this will
never go away!
Ayah #3
Look at me…
I’m so much better
than everyone else!
I’m untouchable.
Who cares about
everyone else?
The Ayah is talking about the one who allows his wealth to distract
him from doing good. HE thinks his wealthy makes him invincible.
He no longer thinks about death or the Day of Judgment.
He no longer gives charity, doesn’t spend on his family, & cheats
others to get more rich.
He’s wrapped up in entertainment & parties and acquiring MORE.
He thinks he’s worth more than everyone else. In reality, a poor,
homeless person may be higher in the sight of Allah than he is.
11. Allah responds to that person’s assumptions:“No, he will be thrown out
into the crusher”
Allah says “thrown out” because that’s what you do with something
worthless. If you eat a piece of candy, you throw out the wrapper. If
you eat a cookie, you brush away the crumbs. Wrappers & crumbs
have no value.
In the same way, Allah is saying that the arrogant person (who made
people feel worthless) will be treated that same way on the Day of
Judgment: Thrown aside into the punishment.
When he sees the punishment, all his delusions will be crushed and
destroyed.
His wealth and status won’t save him on that Day.
Ayah #4
12. And what is Hutama (the crusher)?
It is the fueled fire of Allah
Ayah #5
Ayah #6
__
_
13. The one that climbs up to the hearts
Ayah #7
They will feel fear in their hearts that day
because they hurt people’s feelings.
(This is figurative language)
The punishment of the fire isn’t just
physical pain, but pain in the hearts-
the place they held their greed.
It’s like saying: “My heart is on fire”
You feel regret, and you will feel the pain you caused others.
14. Ayah #8
Being in Jahannam will be like being in a prison cell.
These people were wrapping themselves in luxury to keep themselves
from thinking about the evil things they were doing.
They had time, money and freedom, BUT they abused it.
Well now they’re wrapped in punishment and they’ve lost their freedom.
They wasted the opportunity to do good.
It is wrapping them tightly
15. Under the weight of the columns
Ayah #9
Opinion 1:
This is referring to pillars that hold up
Jahannam…
The evil doers will be imprisoned in
Jahannam where they will crushed by the
weight of their evil deeds, just as they
crushed people with their oppression.
Opinion 2: The flames of the fire will be so
tall they’re like pillars around the people.
