- 4. Who are superheroes? Aim: To establish what students know about heroes. Lesson plan: 1. Engage the class with a discussion in relation to what they know or think they know about superheroes. During the initial stages of the discussion allows students to share their ideas. 2. Then guide the discussion with leading questions such as: I wonder if you have seen any super heroes on TV or in the movies. Shall we create a list? I wonder if you have read any stories or novels about super heroes. Shall we create a list? I wonder if you have ever met someone who you think is a hero (or superhero). Is there anyone that you know who might be considered a hero? 3. Ask students to look at the list of superheroes an think about why the names of the people/characters are considered superheroes? Break students into groups of 4, invite one student to be a scribe and ask students to brainstorm the characteristic of super heroes. What makes them a hero? - 10. Creating Superheroes andVillains Aim: Students use a combination of techniques taught in order to create their own superhero and villain. Lesson plan: 1. Ask students to draw and then paint a superhero. 2. Ask students to draw and then paint a villain. Creating Superhero and Villain Profiles Aim: Students give their characters an identity. Lesson plan: 1. As a class, discuss what information is needed in order to identify with a character (ie name, personality, occupation etc). 2. - 16. Creating a storyline Aim: Students establish the setting and plot for their story. Lesson plan: 1. Show students possible settings for their story. I used backgrounds from an iPad app called Art Maker. As I have limited access to iPads, I created a screen capture of the background using the camera icon within the app. I was then able to print the backgrounds for students so that they could refer to the backgrounds during this planning phase. - 18. Creating a storyline 2. Give students a story line structure to follow. I used the following: Scene 1: Background: (student’s select) In this scene, students introduce the superhero. Scene 2: Background: In this scene, students introduce the villain. Scene 3: Background: In this scene, students write what the characters are doing. Then they introduce a problem. Scene 4: Background: Onomatopoeia Students had previous learnt about onomatopoeia during a poetry unit. We decided to integrate our knowledge in this scene. Once students have planned their story, they can use an iPad app called Explain Everything in conjunction with Art Maker to bring their stories to ‘life’. a) Open the Art Maker app, select a required background and touch the camera icon within the app. This will save the background to your pictures. Repeat this until you have captured all of your required backgrounds. b) Open the Explain Everything app, select the plus button and insert a background image from your pictures.
- 23. Superhero & Villain Creative Texts By Joanne Villis c) Touch the plus button in the Explain Everything app and select new picture. Take a photo of the character which you would like to appear on the page. Select use photo. Then touch the snipping tool (dotted oval) and trace around your character. This will capture your character only and delete the unwanted background. When finished select done. d) Down the bottom of the Explain Everything app, select the plus next to slide to add another page. Repeat previous steps until you have all of your pages with backgrounds and the images you need. e) Go to slide one, select record (red circle), speak the text for this scene (page), select the record again to stop the recording. Record the required speech for each page. f) When you have recorded the appropriate text for each page, export your movie. I export movies to the camera roll and then transfer them to a PC using the iPad’s charging cable.
