Editor's Notes
There are many things that attribute to the value of team collaboration. The value is that more knowledge is brought forth when working in a team setting. In a team, each individual is able to relay their own ideas and opinions; and, find their strengths and weaknesses, while keeping one goal in common. That would be the goal of the project, issue, or assignment. When all of these components work together, the outcome of said goal or project proves to be more competent, productive and reliable.
Introduction of Strategies Using Conflict Resolution as Opportunities for Learning
Conflict can bring about new opportunities for learning. Conflict can open the door to learn more about one’s own self, and what one can be done differently to add value to situations.
It gives one the opportunity to not just hear, but to understand another individual’s perspective or way of thinking. This doesn’t mean that one has to agree with said perspectives being brought forth, but it allows for growth in knowledge when viewing an issue from a different spectrum.
Sometimes another’s point of view may be more beneficial and lead the group in a more positive direction, thus the importance of being able to allow conflict to build a team, not break it down.
Conflict can also bring more insight to the group, as well as build stronger relationships.
“In an effective response to conflict, connection allows assertion of one’s own views without having to destroy another’s” (Sharland, 2014)
This is a great point to remember, as we must leave our ego’s at the door to be able to understand another’s point of view that could potentially bring about a more positive change.
Active learners learn by direct interaction with the material. Reflective learners like to think about the material and prefer individual or very small group communication. Visual learners are better able to remember images they have seen. Verbal learners are better able to remember written or spoken words.
In order to have an effective team you need three basic skills such as communication and negotiation, analytic and creative skills, and organization. A major role for each team member is to be an active listener. It is important to be clear about your ideas so everyone understands what is needed.
The five steps to follow in developing an effective team communication is to be clear, be present, be courteous, be flexible, and be kind. In order to have an effective team each member should be clear in what they say and be available for each other to get help when needed. We need to be courteous by being mindful and keeping up with our part of the assignment. As a team, we should show kindness by being helpful to each other. If we follow the five “Bs” we can make a good team.
You have to evaluate your strengths and weaknesses of your team. Each ones training, experiences that they may have to contribute to the team. Personality is another factor that is important in building your team. Some may be more serious while others are laid back. We need to make it fun. We need to make them feel empowered. This help to build rapport with each other.
The purpose of the learning team charter is so each member of a team can have a written document of what is expected of them, as a team member. The team charter includes the team goals, how to resolve conflict, evenly distributed contribution, and contact information and availability. As you can see, the learning team charter is needed for success.
In order for a team to be successful they need to listen to all the team members. Team members need to come together to find a common goal while showing enthusiasm for the project. Having show integrity toward follow team members and be active to ensure a successful project. Mutual respect toward all members will help eliminate tension or hurt feelings.
Motivation differs in every person. Increasing motivation in productivity will insure more productivity. People like to feel like what they do matters. Showing some simple recognition will lead to self-motivation. When one is motivated they implement the strategies or work need to be finish the common goal. Having positive and negative constructive feedback will continue to leave to more productivity. In short people like to feel like what they do matters.
