What is a Team Charter?
A team charter is a “roadmap” for success. It is the essential first step to any
group project. It details the group’s purpose, its boundaries, and its available
resources.
It outlines the group’s plans for dealing with any conflict which may occur.
A Team Charter is crucial for the success of the team.
The quality of the group’s work will largely depend on the amount of effort and
thought put into the charter by the group.
7. Collaboration and the Team Charter
How is the Team Charter so helpful in ensuring the contribution and
collaboration of all the members?
A Team Charter that has been well-thought out and thoroughly filled out will
detail the team’s intended procedures and policies.
A Team Charter discusses strategies to ensure that all members are contributing
and collaborating effectively.
The Team Charter also discusses methods for dealing with conflict so the
team will know how to manage and resolve it in an efficient manner.
8. Collaboration and the Team Charter
There are several questions to ask during the chartering process that will
prepare the group for what kind of collaborating and contributing is
expected of them. Such as:
Will the team be managed by a leader, or self-managed?
If there is no leader, then who is responsible for ensuring that the team reaches their
goal?
What are the team’s boundaries?
How much time will be given? How often are members expected to meet?
When and where will the team meet? How will it meet? How will members
communicate with one another?

Editor's Notes
The leader of team B would start off with this introduction slide. The team should all have assigned slides that will be discussed throughout the power point. Start off by discussing how important it is to not only have good collaboration between team members but for it to be successful. Speaker should talk about how the following slides will talk about how to build team dynamics and how to become successful with the team.
Speaker should touch on each bullet point. Make emphasis on how the correct collaboration of a team will equal to academic success rather then working alone as an individual. Speaker should add in a personal story of the difference between a team project and an individual project and the positive aspects of working as a team.
The Speaker should discuss how difficult it is to go through conflict and although conflict is never comfortable it is bound to happen. Conflict is something that everyone is going to have to deal with and will happen. Speaker will go through each bullet point and branch off and discuss each point in a bit more detail.
At the end of the slide, the speaker should mention the line from the Learning Team Toolkit which says “There is a direct proportional relationship between the amount of time and intellectual effort we spend chartering our teams and the likelihood those teams will achieve their goals.”
At the first sub-bullet the speaker will give the examples: “A team charter asks what the expectations for involvement and time management are for the members, such as communication and accessibility. At this point in the chartering process the team should discuss what those expectations are ahead of time”.
Speaker continues without the slide: “Questions such as these that plan out how the members will break down the tasks, assign tasks, and establish a working timeline are crucial to ensuring that all members contribute to the team’s goal”
