Joe is receiving treatment at the Mentally Ill Chemical Abuser (MICA) partial hospitalization program at the local community mental health center for clients who are dually diagnosed. Joe has a dependence on marijuana, although he has stopped using it for approximately six months, and has been diagnosed with major depressive disorder. He is being prescribed medication.
Joe reports that he is unable to work due to mental illness, and without an income or health insurance, he is unable to obtain his medication. Joe reports that while he was enrolled as a student at the state university, he would sell marijuana to other college students. Eventually, he was arrested and convicted of possession with intent to distribute a controlled dangerous substance (CDS) and served 3 years in prison. Joe has had no further arrests; however, he has not been able to secure permanent housing or employment since his release.
Joe reports that this event has ruined his life. His lack of employment results from an inability to pass most background checks. If he discloses that he was arrested, Joe reports that he is never called for .

Joe is a 34-year-old male, active in a dual-diagnosis treatment program. He has been putting forth effort to turn his life around following his release from jail for possession with intent to distribute (Plummer, 2014). Several barriers are arising for Joe in his efforts to start a new life that are related to his previous challenges. For example, he is struggling to find employment as a result of his criminal record, there are also barriers with receiving Medicaid benefits with his substance distribution history that are based on state policies (Plummer, 2014). With all of the different barriers that Joe is facing, he is becoming more and more hopeless and his “best chances” according to local services require him to leave the county which will separate him from the few supports he has (Plummer, 2014).
According to Popple & Leighninger (2019), there are several agencies that have a “zero tolerance policy” when it comes to drug usage. Although this can make sense in certain circumstances, I believe that the policy actually has the ability to cause more harm than good. There is significant research done through Dartmouth University that shows us that competitive employment actually has the ability to do more for an individual’s mental health and substance dependence that medication or counseling (Noel, 2019). Through this research Dartmouth developed the IPS (Individualized placement and support) model, which is a high-fidelity model of practice that supported employment abides by. Making it more challenging for individuals to get work is more likely to trigger a relapse due to feelings of hopelessness and/or inadequacy.
Unfortunately, current policies make it extremely difficult for individuals with criminal histories to get good competitive employment. Joe is falling victim to these policies in a way that are making it very hard for him to be successful because of choices he made in his past. He is struggling to find work, based on policies put in place that disqualify him from most employment opportunities based on a criminal background. He is also found ineligible for General benefits from the County Division of Social Services because of his specific charges (Plummer, 2014).

Jose is a 42-year-old, heterosexual, Latino male. He had been booked and charged for vagrancy three times in the last 2 months. He had also been arrested six other times over the past 10 years for various minor offenses, such as trespassing, public drunkenness, and disorderly conduct. After this last hearing, the judge mandated him to a drug treatment facility and gave him 2 years’ probation.

Why is it important for social workers to understand policy? When you think of policies, you may tend to think of the federal policies that support services such as Medicare and state policies that support education and welfare services. However, sometimes the policies that have the greatest impact on clients are the policies of agencies and organizations.
Note
: An "agency or organizational policy" is a policy. For example, it might be part of a county welfare agency that requires an administrator at a juvenile correction facility to report any individual that is an illegal immigrant that comes to that facility.

When working with clients, there are many factors at play that not only formed the client in their early years, but also influence them now. The factors that influence them now can include: family, living situation, job situation, friends, religious community, etc. These factors can all influence how a social worker can assist in intervening in a client’s life. Each of these factors can also be included in different systems that influence the client (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman, 2016).
Let us take, for example, the case of Lester. Lester was an independent member in his community, church community, and was able to handle his life all by himself. However, after an automobile accident, Lester has done a 180 and can no longer clothe or clean himself (Plummer, Makris, and Brocksen, 2014). This is where systems perspective comes in: what systems in Lester’s life can the social worker use to assist Lester? From the case study, we know that Lester is close with his family, but his sister-in-law has really stepped up to the plate in helping with Lester’s care. Because of Lester’s connections with his religious community, they may be relied on for resources. Lester’s children have not been involved really at all, so they should not be counted on as a system on which Lester can rely (Plummer, Makris, and Brocksen, 2014). Lester will have to have new systems created for him, as he cannot create them for himself anymore.
As a social worker, it is crucial to know the systems on which a client can rely. System Theory is a good theory because of its ability to be used with any client. Knowing what resources are available to a client, as well as their interactions with those resources, is key in creating a treatment plan for the client.

Competence includes knowing and abiding by the NASW Code of Ethics. The competent social worker knows the six values (service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, importance of human relationships, integrity, and competence) and their ethical principles (National Association of Social Workers, 2008). They know them, but also understand and practice them. They also know, understand and practice the Social Workers’ Ethical Responsibilities to clients, colleagues, in practice settings, as professionals, to the social work profession and to the broader society (National Association of Social Workers, 2008). They are comfortable enough with the Code of Ethics to know when they need to reach out to a mentor, to ask for clarification in a sticky situation. They have the strength to uphold the Code of Ethics and to confront a colleague when their actions are in question.
Competence means working within the boundaries of what you know and are licensed to practice. This also includes acknowledging when you do not know enough and need to pass a client or duty on to another that is better qualified. As a licensed social worker, you are able to perform certain tasks. There are other tasks that you cannot ethically perform until you are a licensed clinical social worker. The competent social worker knows what they are capable of doing and what they are not.

Competence in social work means to abide by your regions Code of Ethics as well as upholding the law to the highest professional degree. Competent practice protects the integrity of the social work profession and the rights of our clients to appropriate and beneficial service. It also means that as social workers, we have the responsibility to use critical thinking and decision making skills to properly assess and utilize all resources available for the betterment of our unique clients. To do this, a social worker must be conscientious and aware of his or her own barriers to competence in order to overcome them. An example of such a barrier can include lack of experience with a particular group, or the acknowledgment of personal bias to be set aside for the sake of their practice. I think that it is important to realize that social workers are diverse, and will inevitably come across potential challenges to practicing competently. Benefits and Challenges of Generating Community Participation

This article conveys important and useful information that practitioners can apply in their day-to-day
professional lives by including citizen– consumer– client participation in their work. Three collaborative
action projects are described that yielded significant benefits both for local communities and broader
policy. These interventions, which were on topics as diverse as tobacco use among youth, recidivism
among substance abusers, and chronic fatigue syndrome, were greatly enhanced by the involvement of
citizens. The case studies are presented in such a way that the reader has a sense of how, when, and in
what ways the interventions were collaborative as well as what the outcomes have been vis-à-vis public
policy. The article is intended to encourage professional psychologists to collaborate more fully with
community groups in efforts to expand and improve behavioral health services and policies.

You might ask why practitioners would be interested in activity
involving community members in their work. With busy practices,
multiple obligations, and an increasingly hectic work world, add-
ing another set of responsibilities might seem to be burdensome
and even counterproductive. Yet, it is very possible that our work
could be immeasurably enriched by obtaining greater involvement
from citizens– consumers– clients. In fact, such work might even
make for more relevant assessments and interventions as well as
better relationships and cooperation with community partners and
local organizations. These types of rich collaborative efforts could
even help bring added attention, publicity, and even public policy
benefits. In fact, whether you are implementing individual-level
interventions at the local level or larger-scale public health projects
at the community or state level, you probably are going to be
involved in making some decisions regarding behavioral health
policies.
In this article, some of the benefits and challenges of mobilizing
citizen participation will be reviewed. Clearly, these collaborations
have important implications for practitioners. For example, it is
possible that bringing community members into our work might
help us better prioritize the needs and interests of our clients and
participants (Chataway, 2001). In addition, a relationship based on
meaningful citizen involvement may be a critical factor for the
sustainability of community efforts (Altman, 1995). In a sense,
there are multiple worthy rationales for citizen participation, in-
cluding its potential in sensitizing, prioritizing, and sustaining
intervention and research efforts, and these collaborative efforts
might also ultimately help us even influence public policy. But
before dealing with these very practical matters, let me first de-

When working with clients, there are many factors at play that not only formed the client in their early years, but also influence them now. The factors that influence them now can include: family, living situation, job situation, friends, religious community, etc. These factors can all influence how a social worker can assist in intervening in a client’s life. Each of these factors can also be included in different systems that influence the client (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman, 2016).
Let us take, for example, the case of Lester. Lester was an independent member in his community, church community, and was able to handle his life all by himself. However, after an automobile accident, Lester has done a 180 and can no longer clothe or clean himself (Plummer, Makris, and Brocksen, 2014). This is where systems perspective comes in: what systems in Lester’s life can the social worker use to assist Lester? From the case study, we know that Lester is close with his family, but his sister-in-law has really stepped up to the plate in helping with Lester’s care. Because of Lester’s connections with his religious community, they may be relied on for resources. Lester’s children have not been involved really at all, so they should not be counted on as a system on which Lester can rely (Plummer, Makris, and Brocksen, 2014). Lester will have to have new systems created for him, as he cannot create them for himself anymore.
As a social worker, it is crucial to know the systems on which a client can rely. System Theory is a good theory because of its ability to be used with any client. Knowing what resources are available to a client, as well as their interactions with those resources, is key in creating a treatment plan for the client.

Competence includes knowing and abiding by the NASW Code of Ethics. The competent social worker knows the six values (service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, importance of human relationships, integrity, and competence) and their ethical principles (National Association of Social Workers, 2008). They know them, but also understand and practice them. They also know, understand and practice the Social Workers’ Ethical Responsibilities to clients, colleagues, in practice settings, as professionals, to the social work profession and to the broader society (National Association of Social Workers, 2008). They are comfortable enough with the Code of Ethics to know when they need to reach out to a mentor, to ask for clarification in a sticky situation. They have the strength to uphold the Code of Ethics and to confront a colleague when their actions are in question.
Competence means working within the boundaries of what you know and are licensed to practice. This also includes acknowledging when you do not know enough and need to pass a client or duty on to another that is better qualified. As a licensed social worker, you are able to perform certain tasks. There are other tasks that you cannot ethically perform until you are a licensed clinical social worker. The competent social worker knows what they are capable of doing and what they are not.

This article conveys important and useful information that practitioners can apply in their day-to-day
professional lives by including citizen– consumer– client participation in their work. Three collaborative
action projects are described that yielded significant benefits both for local communities and broader
policy. These interventions, which were on topics as diverse as tobacco use among youth, recidivism
among substance abusers, and chronic fatigue syndrome, were greatly enhanced by the involvement of
citizens. The case studies are presented in such a way that the reader has a sense of how, when, and in
what ways the interventions were collaborative as well as what the outcomes have been vis-à-vis public
policy. The article is intended to encourage professional psychologists to collaborate more fully with
community groups in efforts to expand and improve behavioral health services and policies.

You might ask why practitioners would be interested in activity
involving community members in their work. With busy practices,
multiple obligations, and an increasingly hectic work world, add-
ing another set of responsibilities might seem to be burdensome
and even counterproductive. Yet, it is very possible that our work
could be immeasurably enriched by obtaining greater involvement
from citizens– consumers– clients. In fact, such work might even
make for more relevant assessments and interventions as well as
better relationships and cooperation with community partners and
local organizations. These types of rich collaborative efforts could
even help bring added attention, publicity, and even public policy
benefits. In fact, whether you are implementing individual-level
interventions at the local level or larger-scale public health projects
at the community or state level, you probably are going to be
involved in making some decisions regarding behavioral health
policies.
In this article, some of the benefits and challenges of mobilizing
citizen participation will be reviewed. Clearly, these collaborations
have important implications for practitioners. For example, it is
possible that bringing community members into our work might
help us better prioritize the needs and interests of our clients and
participants (Chataway, 2001). In addition, a relationship based on
meaningful citizen involvement may be a critical factor for the
sustainability of community efforts (Altman, 1995). In a sense,
there are multiple worthy rationales for citizen participation, in-
cluding its potential in sensitizing, prioritizing, and sustaining
intervention and research efforts, and these collaborative efforts
might also ultimately help us even influence public policy. But

Working With Individuals: The Case of Roy
Roy is a 34-year-old, divorced, Caucasian male. He has been divorced for 1 year and has three children, Jordon (7), Jared (6), and Jane (3). Roy met his ex-wife, Melissa, when she was 17 and he was 25, and soon afterward she became pregnant with their first child. As part of the divorce agreement, they were given joint custody, and Melissa was granted physical custody.
Roy had been working at a hog confinement farm for the prior 2 months. Previously, he had been a highway patrolman for 10 years. Roy was terminated from the force, and charges were filed against him, after he drove his patrol car into Melissa’s home. He was ordered to pay for the damages to the house and the patrol car and enroll in a batterer’s intervention program (BIP). School violence has become an issue of concern to the law enforcement agencies due to the spontaneous nature of its occurrence. The main motivations of school violence are varied for instance internalizing among students due to social strife within the school environment such as bullying may result in school violence (Bennett-Johnson, n.d.). Access to weapons such as guns is another motivation to the development of school violence. Schools can address violence through developing relationship level strategies such as the development of peer counseling programs in addition to developing security checks that aim to identify the existence of weapons or other dangerous devices within the school environment (Bennett-Johnson, n.d.). Schools should also develop protocols and policies that guide educational stakeholders from teachers to students on how to react to incidents of school violence thus limiting the adverse influences of these events. When developing a training plan for police officers in relation to dealing with possible workforce violence incidents the first step of the plan is to teach the officers the difference between crowd control and crowd management and how these strategies can be applied to different situations (Berkeley Police, 2014). The second step is training the officers on situational awareness which enables them to make better decisions in such circumstances. The third step involves simulating the different types of protests enabling the officers to apply concepts learned in real life situations.

Drug Courts
The activity I chose was drug courts. I chose this activity because drugs seem to be a main gateway into criminal activity and individuals becoming offenders and ending up in the criminal justice system. Drug courts are a system that treats drug addicted and mentally ill individuals for their addiction without putting them into the traditional criminal justice system. The drug courts program offer the offender counseling, mental health services as well as job placement programs and vocational training (Robinson, 2013). Like a spoke of drug abuse is the gateway that leads to addiction and this only leads to crimes like robberies, theft or other crimes to support these habits. The American Health Care Industry is a very large social institution. The health care system is designed to adapt to the communities served (Schaefer, 2009), it is a formal organization structured for efficiency and a specific purpose. The three major sociological orientations are functionalist, conflict, and interactionist; we will discuss each perspective as it pertains to the health care industry. Each perspective has its strengths and weaknesses, from high function to discrimination through social class, to stability and lack of accessibility.
The functionalist perspective attempts to analyze the industry’s major tasks and how it maintains its survival. According to Schaefer (2009) the health care industry effectively replaces personnel, trains new recruits, provides an important service to its members and its community, preserves order through strict regulations and operating procedures, and maintains its purpose through motivation for social change and charitable characteristics. The functional perspective emphasizes the contribution the health care industry makes to our society’s overall stability. Health care provides basic protections against the spread of contagious diseases, maintains awareness of healthy practices, and contributes to the wellness of the community.
Conflict within the health care system can present as greed, economic influence, unavailability to specific groups, or prejudice privilege provided to insured patients. Medical care has become increasingly bureaucratic; many clinics and doctors’ offices are overwhelmed with paperwork and regulations which can prevent them effectively helping the ailing masses. Health insurance is used to supplement the outrageous cost of medical care and is out of reach to many United States residents. New data indicates 50.7 million Americans are without private health care insurance and the outlook is grim due to the erosion of the economy and employer-based insurance plans (Greenstein, 2010). Federal programs attempt to provide basic or restricted coverage to the one out of every six Americans stretching the systems already limited resources. These constraints leave the uninsured with few choices, less comprehensive care, long wait times, and increased frustration within poor communities.
The interactionalist would be interested in the effects of limited health care on a micro level. The specific communities most affected by health care coverage are the elderly, children, and people living below the poverty line. According to Schaefer (2009), interactionist theorist would emphasize that our social behavior is influenced by the social roles we accept. By accepting that health care is difficult to obtain or the system unfairly represents wealthier patrons, the lower classes of people resort to alternate means including local clinics, alternative medicine, internet applications such as WebMD and other community resource.

A 72 year old woman was admitted to the Neurological Intensive Care Unit following a cerebral hemorrhage which left her with severe brain damage and ventilator dependent. One year before this event, the patient and her husband had drawn up "living wills" with an attorney. She was diagnosed by her treating physician as being in a permanent unconscious condition. The patient's living will specified that the patient did not want ventilator support or other artificial life support in the event of a permanent unconscious condition or terminal condition.
The patient's husband is her legal next of kin and the person with surrogate decision-making authority. When the living will was discussed with him, he insisted that the patient had not intended for the document to be used in a situation like the present one. Further discussion with him revealed that he understood that the patient would not be able to recover any meaningful brain function but he argued that the living will did not apply because her condition was not imminently terminal. He further indicated that he did not consider his wife to be in a permanent unconscious condition. The immediate family members (the couple’s adult children) disagreed with their father’s refusal to withdraw life support.
The treatment team allowed a week to pass to allow the husband more time to be supported in his grief and to appreciate the gravity of his wife’s situation. The final project for this course is an analysis of the legal and ethical issues involved in the below health care scenario.
A 72 year old woman was admitted to the Neurological Intensive Care Unit following a cerebral hemorrhage which left her with severe brain damage and ventilator dependent. One year before this event, the patient and her husband had drawn up "living wills" with an attorney. She was diagnosed by her treating physician as being in a permanent unconscious condition. The patient's living will specified that the patient did not want ventilator support or other artificial life support in the event of a permanent unconscious condition or terminal condition.
The patient's husband is her legal next of kin and the person with surrogate decision-making authority. When the living will was discussed with him, he insisted that the patient had not intended for the document to be used in a situation like the present one. Further discussion with him revealed that he understood that the patient would not be able to recover any meaningful brain function but he argued that the living will did not apply because her condition was not imminently terminal. He further indicated that he did not consider his wife to be in a permanent unconscious condition. The immediate family members (the couple’s adult children) disagreed with their father’s refusal to withdraw life support.
The treatment team allowed a week to pass to allow the husband more time to be supported in his grief and to appreciate the gravity of his wife’s situation. Nevertheless, at the end of this time, the husband was unwilling to authorize withdrawal of life support measures consistent with the patient's wishes as expressed in her living will.

Legal and ethical considerations
Ethics form an important part of our daily activities since they form certain thresholds that must be adhered to create a better environment for individuals who are interacting. Ethics, therefore, focus on moral concerns that are involved in a certain situation and thus dictates how activities are supposed to undertake to ensure that everyone is considered within the set moral and ethical standards. Counseling is a serious engagement, which requires significant consideration of ethical principles to guide the relationship between and counselor and the clients. There are some ethical issues, which arise in different situations during the counselling process. How these ethical challenges are handled is very important since it helps in outlining the professional level within the counselling profession. Ethical issues are moral obligations that bind a given organization to a certain code of ethics. Having ethical issues to guide an organization presents the best chance of working in harmony between the business and all the stakeholders involved. Ethical issues differ depending on daily mortality. All the ethical issues revolve around how individuals or business organizations are responsible for protecting the rights and needs of other parties who have an interest in their products and services (Pozgar, 2014). Legal and ethical considerations
The treatment of violent, nonviolent and trauma victims has to be within the legal constraints where the process conforms to certain ethical considerations, which are put in place to ensure that the treatment process of each falls within the recommended threshold by psychological associations. The treatment process among psychologists and counselors is clearly stipulated in various psychological associations, which regulate the performance and the level of engagement between counselors and psychologists with their respective clients. Therefore, there are some ethical issues that are very important since they dictate the general engagement and how the whole process spurns out (Gunn and Taylor, 2014).
Confidentiality
In both cases, confidentiality is paramount and is key to having any successful treatment plan. For an effective treatment plan, there is significant which is shared regarding the condition of the client. In this case, the counselor or psychologist who is engaged needs to ensure that any information relating to the case at hand is highly engaged to ensure that the process remains ethical (Tribe and Morrissey, 2015).

Rita is a 22-year-old, heterosexual, Latina female working in the hospitality industry at a resort. She is the youngest of five children and lives at home with her parents. Working With Individuals: The Case of Roy
Roy is a 34-year-old, divorced, Caucasian male. He has been divorced for 1 year and has three children, Jordon (7), Jared (6), and Jane (3). Roy met his ex-wife, Melissa, when she was 17 and he was 25, and soon afterward she became pregnant with their first child. As part of the divorce agreement, they were given joint custody, and Melissa was granted physical custody.
Roy had been working at a hog confinement farm for the prior 2 months. Previously, he had been a highway patrolman for 10 years. Roy was terminated from the force, and charges were filed against him, after he drove his patrol car into Melissa’s home. He was ordered to pay for the damages to the house and the patrol car and enroll in a batterer’s intervention program (BIP). Melissa was granted a permanent order of protection against him, and the court ordered that Roy’s visits with his children be supervised.
I met Roy during our intake and assessment meeting prior to beginning the BIP. As one of the co-facilitators, I met individually with many of the group members prior to our first group meeting to learn more about why they were referred to the BIP and to orient them to the group’s goals and objectives. School violence has become an issue of concern to the law enforcement agencies due to the spontaneous nature of its occurrence. The main motivations of school violence are varied for instance internalizing among students due to social strife within the school environment such as bullying may result in school violence (Bennett-Johnson, n.d.). Access to weapons such as guns is another motivation to the development of school violence. Schools can address violence through developing relationship level strategies such as the development of peer counseling programs in addition to developing security checks that aim to identify the existence of weapons or other dangerous devices within the school environment (Bennett-Johnson, n.d.). Schools should also develop protocols and policies that guide educational stakeholders from teachers to students on how to react to incidents of school violence thus limiting the adverse influences of these events. When developing a training plan for police officers in relation to dealing with possible workforce violence incidents the first step of the plan is to teach the officers the difference between crowd control and crowd management and how these strategies can be applied to different situations (Berkeley Police, 2014). The second step is training the officers on situational awareness which enables them to make better decisions in such circumstances. The third step involves simulating the different types of protests enabling the officers to apply concepts learned in real life situations.

Drug Courts
The activity I chose was drug courts. I chose this activity because drugs seem to be a main gateway into criminal activity and individuals becoming offenders and ending up in the criminal justice system. Drug courts are a system that treats drug addicted and mentally ill individuals for their addiction without putting them into the traditional criminal justice system. The drug courts program offer the offender counseling, mental health services as well as job placement programs and vocational training (Robinson, 2013). Like a spoke of drug abuse is the gateway that leads to addiction and this only leads to crimes like robberies, theft or other crimes to support these habits. Some of these crimes are petty crimes and the crime and the cause has to be taken into consideration, so that’s why drug courts are so important. Treating a petty criminal who is drug addicted in the drug courts alleviates the offender going to prison which are already overcrowded and this only costs the government or state more funds to incarcerate this individual. The key is keeping the individual in the program long enough for it to work.

The American Health Care Industry is a very large social institution. The health care system is designed to adapt to the communities served (Schaefer, 2009), it is a formal organization structured for efficiency and a specific purpose. The three major sociological orientations are functionalist, conflict, and interactionist; we will discuss each perspective as it pertains to the health care industry. Each perspective has its strengths and weaknesses, from high function to discrimination through social class, to stability and lack of accessibility.
The functionalist perspective attempts to analyze the industry’s major tasks and how it maintains its survival. According to Schaefer (2009) the health care industry effectively replaces personnel, trains new recruits, provides an important service to its members and its community, preserves order through strict regulations and operating procedures, and maintains its purpose through motivation for social change and charitable characteristics. The functional perspective emphasizes the contribution the health care industry makes to our society’s overall stability. Health care provides basic protections against the spread of contagious diseases, maintains awareness of healthy practices, and contributes to the wellness of the community.
Conflict within the health care system can present as greed, economic influence, unavailability to specific groups, or prejudice privilege provided to insured patients. Medical care has become increasingly bureaucratic; many clinics and doctors’ offices are overwhelmed with paperwork and regulations which can prevent them effectively helping the ailing masses. Health insurance is used to supplement the outrageous cost of medical care and is out of reach to many United States residents. New data indicates 50.7 million Americans are without private health care insurance and the outlook is grim due to the erosion of the economy and employer-based insurance plans (Greenstein, 2010). Federal programs attempt to provide basic or restricted coverage to the one out of every six Americans stretching the systems already limited resources. These constraints leave the uninsured with few choices, less comprehensive care, long wait times, and increased frustration within poor communities.
The interactionalist would be interested in the effects of limited health care on a micro level. The specific communities most affected by health care coverage are the elderly, children, and people living below the poverty line. According to Schaefer (2009), interactionist theorist would emphasize that our social behavior is influenced by the social roles we accept. By accepting that health care is difficult to obtain or the system unfairly represents wealthier patrons, the lower classes of people resort to alternate means including local clinics, alternative medicine, internet applications such as WebMD and other community resource.

The patient's living will specified that the patient did not want ventilator support or other artificial life support in the event of a permanent unconscious condition or terminal condition.
The patient's husband is her legal next of kin and the person with surrogate decision-making authority. When the living will was discussed with him, he insisted that the patient had not intended for the document to be used in a situation like the present one. Further discussion with him revealed that he understood that the patient would not be able to recover any meaningful brain function but he argued that the living will did not apply because her condition was not imminently terminal. He further indicated that he did not consider his wife to be in a permanent unconscious condition. The immediate family members (the couple’s adult children) disagreed with their father’s refusal to withdraw life support.
The treatment team allowed a week to pass to allow the husband more time to be supported in his grief and to appreciate the gravity of his wife’s situation. Nevertheless, at the end of this time, the husband was unwilling to authorize withdrawal of life support measures consistent with the patient's wishes as expressed in her living will.

Ethics form an important part of our daily activities since they form certain thresholds that must be adhered to create a better environment for individuals who are interacting. Ethics, therefore, focus on moral concerns that are involved in a certain situation and thus dictates how activities are supposed to undertake to ensure that everyone is considered within the set moral and ethical standards. Counseling is a serious engagement, which requires significant consideration of ethical principles to guide the relationship between and counselor and the clients. There are some ethical issues, which arise in different situations during the counselling process. How these ethical challenges are handled is very important since it helps in outlining the professional level within the counselling profession. Ethical issues are moral obligations that bind a given organization to a certain code of ethics. Having ethical issues to guide an organization presents the best chance of working in harmony between the business and all the stakeholders involved. Ethical issues differ depending on daily mortality. All the ethical issues revolve around how individuals or business organizations are responsible for protecting the rights and needs of other parties who have an interest in their products and services (Pozgar, 2014). Legal and ethical considerations
The treatment of violent, nonviolent and trauma victims has to be within the legal constraints where the process conforms to certain ethical considerations, which are put in place to ensure that the treatment process of each falls within the recommended threshold by psychological associations. The treatment process among psychologists and counselors is clearly stipulated in various psychological associations, which regulate the performance and the level of engagement between counselors and psychologists with their respective clients. Therefore, there are some ethical issues that are very important since they dictate the general engagement and how the whole process spurns out (Gunn and Taylor, 2014).

In both cases, confidentiality is paramount and is key to having any successful treatment plan. Rita is a 22-year-old, heterosexual, Latina female working in the hospitality industry at a resort. She is the youngest of five children and lives at home with her parents. Rita has dated in the past but never developed a serious relationship. She is close to her immediate and extended family as well as to her female friends in the Latino community. Although her parents and three of her siblings were born in the Dominican Republic, Rita was born in the United States.
A year ago, Rita was sexually assaulted by an acquaintance of a male coworker. Rita and a female coworker met Juan and Bob after work at a local bar for a light meal and a few drinks. PART 1. FORMATTING
Follow these steps now to save yourself headaches later and avoid losing credit
Title a word processor file “film-template” or something. Follow the instructions in this Formatting section. For an
essay title, type “[essay title]”. For paragraph text, type a sentence and copy and paste it repeatedly until you have a
paragraph. Do the same to make another paragraph, and another, until you’re onto your second page. Do this to
make sure MS Word isn’t adding extra space between paragraphs (see below) and that you have no first page header
and the correct second page header (see below). When it’s time to write your essay, open this template file and save
it to a new name. Keep the template file for your next essay (and any future course you take with me).
Some formatting instructions below are to ensure students are meeting the same length requirement and that no
formatting deviations are disguising this fact. If I ask you to email me the word-processor copy of your essay and it
shows deviations, you will lose more credit than if you had just handed in a paper under the page minimum. If you
email me a file that is not identical to the essay you handed in, you will lose even more credit.
1. Format the top of your essay like this. To get the above-and-below spacing for your title as below, enter a hard return above and
below your title, then (in your double-spaced document) make these above-and-below lines single space.

Course Scope:
Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century (1999) “Language and communication are at the
heart of the human experience. The United States must educate students who are linguistically and culturally
equipped to communicate successfully in a pluralistic American society and abroad. This imperative envisions a
future in which ALL students will develop and maintain proficiency in English and at least one other language…”
Our major focus is on learning to communicate appropriately in practical, culturally authentic contexts. Students
are asked, to a limited extent, to use their Spanish to engage in simple dialog and talk about themselves and
create with the language in practical ways. Students also correct peer work and in doing so, students solve
problems (and thus engage in analysis, synthesis, and evaluation).

LENGTH AND DEVELOPMENT: Each paper in our class is a 5-paragraph essay, plus there is a title page (=cover page) at the start and a Sources list at the end. The body of the paper is to be double-spaced. The body of the paper should be five paragraphs and a total of 500-to-800 words in length. The 500 minimum is firm; you really have not adequately developed the paper if less than that. The 800-word upper limit is really a guideline—ok to go over. Just don’t ramble. To determine length, I look at the BODY of the paper only (not title page or sources list) and consider primarily the word count. (Microsoft Word makes this easy. Just select from the first line of your first paragraph to the last line of your last paragraph. The word-count is provided on the lower left by MS-Word.). [I do not go by number of pages because there are too many ways that gets fudged by margins, font size, line spacing, etc. However, fyi---Typically, if you follow these instructions, the body of your paper will be 2-1/2 to 3-1/2 pages in length—add a page for your title page and another for your sources list and that then gets to 4-1/2-to 5/1/2.]
Your paper must have a numbered list of sources at the end combined with short in-text citations to those sources in the body of the paper. Any direct quote needs both quote marks and an in-text citation to the source. Any paraphrase or summary of information from a source requires an in-text citation to that source.
Use ONLY the sources designated. If for some reason you must use additional sources, do NOT google for them—use the university library. Pages 2 and 3 below show the sources for each topic and the SWS format for listing and citing each.
In this assignment, do NOT include long quotes of 4 lines or more. The paper is too short for that. Keep any quotes short and clearly marked with quote marks and a citation. Most of the paper should be you using mostly your words while using and summarizing information from your sources, as well as commenting and developing the paper according to the instructions. TIP: Before writing your paper, brainstorm first and make a general list or outline of each paragraph and what it will include. Use the class text for examples or specific information, and jot down the page numbers where you found that information. Do the same with other sources used. This will make your writing of the paper much easier. Then, start typing a rough draft. Plan to revise and edit yourself; allot time to polish the paper before you finally submit. Procrastination is the enemy of quality.

Abstract
Given the complexity of contemporary healthcare environments, it is vital that nurses are able to recognize and address ethical issues as they arise. Though dilemmas and challenging situations create the most obvious, dramatic risks to patients, routine nursing actions have implications for patients as well. Ethical awareness involves recognizing the ethical implications of all nursing actions. Developing ethical awareness is one way to empower nurses to act as moral agents in order to provide patients with safe and ethical care. The aim of this article is to provide an overview of the concept of ethical awareness and the role it plays in patient care. Background information is provided; three everyday scenarios highlight the importance of ethical awareness in everyday nursing practice; followed by additional discussion; and strategies for heightening ethical awareness are suggested.

Ethical awareness involves recognizing the ethical implications of all nursing actions, and is the first step in moral action.
Given the complexity of contemporary healthcare environments, it is vital that nurses are able to recognize and address ethical issues as they arise. This means that nurses must first recognize the potential ethical repercussions of their actions in order to effectively resolve problems and address patient needs. Neutrality. The author is biased about the issue of poverty and its impact on education. The author decided to focus on the negative side of poverty only. This painted a bad picture on the government and rich countries who, it is claimed, are the ones who cause poverty. Although this is partially true, the author fails to recognize intervention efforts from these rich countries that have worked to curb poverty. and required three vessel coronary artery bypass grafting. During his admission,

glycemic control and reducing his risk of the comorbidities associated with poorly
controlled Type 2 diabetes mellitus.
His last hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) was 9.5% eight years ago, and he had
microalbuminuria at that time.

ness pitfalls and make sure you’re
making use of all the means at
your disposal to operate effectively
from a distance. Interestingly
enough, my experiences in P&G as
both a remote manager and a
remote employee have made me a
more disciplined manager.
Various situations, be it with
remote teams who work from
their homes or international
employees in different time zones,
bring unique characteristics to
which you’ll need to adjust your
management style. That said, the
basics for any manager remain the
same—you just have to do them
better. Do them well, and you’ll
have a highly energized and driven
work team. The consequences of
not doing so are twice as disas-
trous with remote teams.
What You Can Do
Let me share some of my favorite
must-do items for any remote
leader.
1. Energize your team with a
vision. To win as a team and as an
organization, it’s critical to involve
your remote group in the creation
and deployment of a common
vision. Ask yourself what your
most important breakthrough will
be, and set this as the direction
that propels your people and your
action plan. If it isn’t possible to do
this face to face, take time to have a
brainstorming forum, group chats,
and calls with video where you
come to a clear, meaningful state-
ment of the accomplishment your
team will be known for.
2. Engage them with a robust
action plan. This is probably one
of the most critical aspects of
remote leadership. Each team
member needs to feel engaged and
have a clear understanding about
what will be requested from them
or their teams, how it will be mea-
sured, and when you will expect it.
To do this well is to set a solid
foundation and clear the way for
what will come. Draft an action
plan with a clear link to your
vision, and engage each team
member individually with the
objectives assigned to them. Align
on the way updates will be pre-
sented and on key milestones.
Give examples of the way you like
updates to be presented and the
data you expect to see in them.
3. Be in touch with your team.
You need to be disciplined about
having periodic touchpoints in
order to stay connected. Watch out
for overly independent employees
who think they don’t need direc-
tion and allow the distance to
grow. It’s important to align prior-
ities, review action-plan progress,
and talk about career develop-
ment. It also doesn’t hurt to build
a personal relationship that fosters
trust and open communication.

sure to schedule face-to-face time
as much as possible, and, again,
make use of the vast array of avail-
able videoconferencing te.

The Boston Globe is a company that has been running since 1872. They are experiencing great changes due to changes in the media industry. The owner of The Boston Globe is The Boston Globe Media Partners, LLC. Now, the publisher and the owner of The Boston Globe is John Henry (The Boston Globe). Due to technological innovations, the way and how we inform ourselves is different than the past generations (ex: virtually).
The Boston Globe’s structure, human resources, political and symbolic frames activities are changing so quickly due to the new organization’s transformations and innovations. The structure of the media organizations has changed internally and externally. In relation to human resources we are going to focus on the internal and external changes as a result of the structural change. Politically and symbolically The Boston Globehas transformed, as well. We are going to explore how digital innovation has completely transformed The Boston Globe. This issue is important as The Boston Globe is experiencing many transformations and revenue challenges and they have to survive. Moreover, as a group, we will focus on the organizational transformations in relation to the four frames (structural, human resources, political & symbolic).

Due to all the new technological innovation and other online website there has been a need to get an IT department. This IT department takes care of the online website. Moreover, there needs to be a cyber security team because of all the hacking. The Boston Globe needs to protect themselves from the hackers. Additionally, jobs at The Boston Globe have changed greatly. They had to fire Truck drivers to deliver the newspapers and paper boys and hire more tech people.

Poverty’s Impact on Education in America
Most evidently in America children born or brought up in poverty are faced with insignificant education, versus a child with a higher income background. I have chosen this topic for my research assignment being that an impact of poverty can affect a child’s academic accomplishments significantly. This results in them facing challenges such as lacking intellectual and literary skills. The child readiness for school is reduced by poverty because it brings forth poor physical health and motor skills, dwindles the children's ability to concentrate and remember information, reduces curiosity, attentiveness and motivation. Children from lower-income families who manage to complete high school are less likely to proceed to college. Such children end up not achieving their life goals for lack of education. The effects of poverty on education for some children present unique challenges in breaking the cycle of generational poverty. It further reduces their chances of living productive and rewarding lives.

Abstract
The authors examined the predictive relationship between the performance of job duties informed by the American School
Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model and overall wellness of school counselors. We also examined the relationship
between organizational factors (i.e., Recognized ASCA Model Program, supervision, and support), the frequency of job duties
performed, and overall wellness. The results revealed a predictive relationship between some of the job duties school counselors
perform and wellness. We provide implications for school counseling practice and training programs.

Wellness, defined as a way of life that fosters “the optimum
state of health and well-being that each individual is capable of
achieving” (Myers, Sweeny, & Witmer, 2000, p. 252), is a
central foundation of the school counseling profession. The
American School Counselor Association’s ASCA Ethical Stan-
dards for School Counselors require school counselors to per-
form duties identified by the ASCA National Model (ASCA,
2012, 2016; Standard B.3.c) and to “monitor their emotional
and physical health and practice wellness to ensure optimal
professional effectiveness” (Standard B.3.f). Therefore, school
counselors must balance the dual task of supporting their stu-
dents’ academic, social/emotional, and career development
while also ensuring that their own wellness needs are being
met (ASCA, 2012, 2016; Bryant & Constantine, 2006; Limberg,

● Implementation – the way that strategy is operationalized or executed. Three issues are
often mentioned by strategy practitioners as being important in achieving successful
implementation: the clarity of the strategy, the nature of the leadership provided by top

It is loved and it is hated. It is a shining example of how
good-value food can be brought to a mass market. It is a
symbol of everything that is wrong with ‘industrialized’, cap-
italist, bland, high-calorie and environmentally unfriendly
commercialism. It is the best-known and most loved fast
food brand in the world with more than 36,000 restau-
rants in 117 countries, providing jobs for 1.7 million staff
and feeding 69 million customers per day (yes, per day!).
It is part of the homogenization of individual national cul-
tures, filling the world with bland, identical, ‘cookie cutter’,
Americanized and soulless operations that dehumanize
its staff by forcing them to follow ridged and over-defined
procedures. But whether you see it as friend, foe, or a bit
of both, McDonald’s has revolutionized the food industry,
affecting the lives of both the people who produce food and
the people who eat it. It has also had its ups (mainly) and
downs (occasionally) as markets, customers and economic
circumstances change. Yet, even in the toughest times it has
always displayed remarkable resilience. What follows is a
brief (for such a large corporation) summary of its history.
Starting small
Central to the development of McDonald’s is Ray Kroc, who
by 1954 and at the age of 52 had been variously a piano
player, a paper cup salesman and a multi-mixer salesman.
He was surprised by a big order for eight multi-mixers
from a restaurant in San Bernardino, California. When
he visited the customer he found a small but successful
restaurant run by two brothers Dick and Mac McDonald.
They had opened their ‘Bar-B-Que’ restaurant 14 years
earlier, and by the time Ray Kroc visited the brothers’ oper-
ation it had a self-service drive-in format with a limited
menu of nine items. He was amazed by the effectiveness
of their operation. Focusing on a limited menu including
burgers, fries and beverages had allowed them to analyse
every step of the process of producing and serving their

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic Imperative
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Drug Policies and Ethics The NASW Code of Ethics provides social workers with guidelines and standards for interacting with clients, colleagues, communities, and society, as a whole. These standards govern interactions and professional behavior of social work
- 3. practitioners. The NASW has also developed specific standards, which are published in the NASW Standards for Social Work Practice With Clients With Substance Use Disorders. These standards emphasize the importance of the competence of social workers. The standards indicate that social workers should be knowledgeable of evidence-based interventions for substance disorders. The confidentiality standard becomes essential as social workers must be informed and comply with federal, state, and local laws about substance use, as well as third-party payee regulations. For this Discussion , review this week’s resources, including the case Working with Clients with Dual Diagnosis: The Case of Joe,and consider how social policies affect Joe’s circumstances as described in the case study. Then, think about any gaps in service you found in Joe’s case. Finally, reflect on how you might address these gaps or make changes to the policies that affect Joe. Working With Clients With Dual Diagnosis: The Case of Joe Joe is a 34-year-old, Caucasian male who came to the County Division of Social Services to apply for General Assistance (GA) benefits. The GA program provides cash assistance, Medicaid coverage, and housing for homeless single adults. Joe is in need of Medicaid benefits in order to remain active in his treatment program. Joe is receiving treatment at the Mentally Ill Chemical Abuser (MICA) partial hospitalization program at the local community mental health center for clients who are dually diagnosed. Joe has a dependence on marijuana, although he has stopped using it for approximately six months, and has been diagnosed with major depressive disorder. He is being prescribed medication.
- 4. Joe reports that he is unable to work due to mental illness, and without an income or health insurance, he is unable to obtain his medication. Joe reports that while he was enrolled as a student at the state university, he would sell marijuana to other college students. Eventually, he was arrested and convicted of possession with intent to distribute a controlled dangerous substance (CDS) and served 3 years in prison. Joe has had no further arrests; however, he has not been able to secure permanent housing or employment since his release. Joe reports that this event has ruined his life. His lack of employment results from an inability to pass most background checks. If he discloses that he was arrested, Joe reports that he is never called for interviews. But when he once failed to disclose the information to the prospective employer, Joe was terminated for lying on his application. Joe believes that he has little hope for future employment. Joe has few natural supports in his life. He reports that following the incarceration, his family distanced itself from him and his girlfriend at the time broke up with him. He reports that his only supports are his local Narcotics Anonymous (NA) sponsor and his mental health counselor. Joe reports that his housing situation has been unstable and sporadic for the past 10 years. Joe’s mental health counselor from the MICA program has contacted me to advocate for Joe’s approval for benefits. I explained that under the current state regulations, Joe is ineligible for benefits due to his CDS distribution conviction. The only program options that I can offer him are food stamps and access to a homeless shelter outside of the county. The counselor explained that relocation would cause a disruption to Joe’s mental health treatment and would cause him to lose contact with his local NA sponsor.
- 5. In response to the counselor’s concerns, I suggested that Joe contact the local faith-based organization for assistance. Although they do not house single males, they have an extensive network of volunteers, mentors, and donors who may financially support people in need. I referred Joe to a program that offers bonding to people seeking employment who have been previously incarcerated. Finally, I suggested that the counselor research Joe’s ability to remain in treatment at the hospital despite his lack of Medicaid coverage. The counselor agreed to assist Joe with these suggestions. By Day 3 Post an explanation of how drug policies affect Joe’s circumstances, as described in the case study. Then, explain any gaps in service you found in Joe’s case as a result of the drug policies described in the case study. Finally, describe a strategy you might use to address these gaps or make changes to the policies that affect Joe. - 10. Joe is a 34-year-old white male who is caught between a rock and a hard place and is seeking assistance to improve his overall well-being. Joe is a six-month recovering addict from marijuana who is also diagnosed with major depression (dual diagnosis) (Plummer, Markis & Brocksen, 2014). He is currently receiving services for both diagnoses with the Mentally Ill Chemical Abuser (MICA) partial hospitalization program (Plummer, Markis & Brocksen). Joe has applied for General Assistance (GA) to help him with his recovery and his daily living. GA offers benefits for cash, Medicaid, and housing for homeless single adults (Plummer, Markis & Brocksen). Unfortunately, due to his past, he does not qualify for assistance. When Joe was in college, he was arrested and convicted of possession with the intent to distribute a controlled dangerous substance (CS) while on the university’s grounds (Plummer, Markis & Brocksen). He served three years in prison, however, since his release he has had no further arrests (Plummer, Markis & Brocksen). Due to Joe’s conviction, he is having a hard time finding employment (Plummer, Markis & Brocksen). He has applied for jobs, however, if he puts his conviction history on the application, he does not receive a callback. When he omitted this information, the employer discovered that he lied and thus he was fired (Plummer, Markis & Brocksen). Being that Joe is having a difficult time finding employment, he is unable to secure housing. Thus his need to apply for GA. According to GA policy, Joe is not eligible for services due to his conviction of CDS. The State’s regulations state that any person convicted of CDS is not eligible for housing assistance (Plummer, Markis & Brocksen). The State in which Joe resides is trying to cut down on drug dealers residing in low-income housing areas (Plummer, Markis & Brocksen). It is suggested
- 11. that Joe seek housing assistance at a homeless shelter outside of the county (Plummer, Markis & Brocksen). If, however, Joe were to go to a different county for housing, his treatment would be affected. He would not have access to the treatment facility, his counselor with whom he has developed a strong rapport with and the sober support he developed in the community (his sponsor and self-help group) (Plummer, Markis & Brocksen). Joe is at a point in his life where he is ready and willing to better himself, he wants to work on his recovery and mental health issues. He is actively engaged and taking the steps needed to better himself, however, due to the policies in place and his conviction history, he is hitting roadblocks that can be very discouraging. He needs income in order to pay rent for housing, however, he is unable to obtain employment due to his conviction history. That same history is why he does not qualify for GA homeless services. If he cannot find housing, this can, in turn, affect his ability to remain clean and sober. One can understand and appreciate the need to not provide housing to a drug dealer in low-income housing areas, however, some people who have been incarcerated for CDS have learned their lesson and wish to improve their lives. A possible suggestion to modify this policy would be that a person how has bee convicted of CDS and is seeking GA assistance should complete a substance abuse evaluation to confirm they are not acti8vely using. If treatment is recommended, they need to comply. Furthermore, if a person has been convicted of CDS and seeking GA assistance, they must attend a re-entry program, a program that can help people who have been incarcerated re- enter society. These programs can help with going to school to learn a trade, applying for college or something as simple as learning how to use public transportation (Ferner, 2015). If these changes were made, they would allow Joe to receive the services to pay for rent as also receive services to become a

Joe is having a hard time finding assistance with services due to his conviction of distributing illegal substances. Joe served his time and has been sober for sometime. He continues to attend a dual diagnosis treatment to address both his mental health and substance abuse. Joe is seeking assistance with health insurance, housing and cash assistance due to his inability to work. Joe has been denied benefits due to his conviction, per state policy. (Plummer, S-B,. Makris, S., & Brocksen, S.M. 2014).
- 13. As the social worker of Joe, the first step that I would take is to have Joe apply for disability. Joe should be able to retrieve documentation from the mental health professionals he works with stating his inability to work. This is a federal service and he should be approved with proper documentation, although it will take some time. This will relieve Joe’s stress of lack of income. The next step that I would take is to complete financial assistance documentation with the treatment facility Joe attends. It sounds like Joe attends treatment at a hospital. All hospitals have financial assistance programs and can not turn clients away due to their inability to pay. I would encourage Joe to continue with his sponsor, as this will serve him in his long term sobriety. The next step I would take would be to refer Joe to a case manager at the homeless shelter. Our homeless shelter here provides a path of independence for the people it serves. They receive federal grants and private donations to assist with the payment of rent for the people they serve. They also connect the homeless to jobs or a case manager that will help them achieve employment, assuming that Joe can eventually gain enough stability to work. The disability payment will allow him stability once the grants run out from the homeless shelter. The Code of Ethics of the National Association of Social Workers calls upon social workers to “…facilitate informed participation by the public in shaping policies and institutions.” (NASW, 1999). Additionally, Section 6.04 (a) of the Code, states that, “social workers should engage in social and political action that seeks to ensure that all people have equal access to the resources, employment, services, and opportunities they require to meet their basic human needs and promote social justice” (Beerama, D. 2012).
- 14. As an advocate for Joe and other clients in his position I would advocate for change in the policy that doesn't allow them access to these services. It makes absolutely no sense to me that in this country we incarcerate people for their crimes, with the intent of rehabilitation. Then we release them and deny them any services that would help them continue on a better path. In my opinion Joe needs access to these services so he can continue to receive the assistance he needs. In my experience as a social worker many clients have stated that they use marijuana as a way to cope with anxiety and depression. This could be the case for Joe as well. If he is denied assistance which would cause him to lose his supporters, he could relapse and return to his old lifestyle. If the goal is to make keep Joe a productive member of society, he will need these services.
