Advantages and Disadvantage to being AArt Director
Michael Temple Professor Sigmon RWS 305 11 a.m. 14 October 2014 Need for Visual
Communication Art has been much more than just a hobby or a way of expressing ones feelings, it
was long before there was any proof of a verbal language; art was a key form of communication.
Artists create art to communicate ideas, thoughts, or feelings. They use a variety of methods such as
painting, sculpting, or illustration. Also an assortment of medians, including oils, watercolors, acrylics,
pastels, pencils, pen and ink, plaster, clay, and computers. Artists works may be realistic, stylized, or
abstract and may depict objects, people, nature, or events. Art today is the key form of the world
around us, from advertisement too architecture, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Through my research, artist can struggle to find a job they want or find it hard to sell their art. Those
artists who do not versatile in the different media s of art, their opportunities can be limited due to
keen completion in both salary jobs and freelance work. This is mainly due to the number of qualified
workers/artist exceeding the number of available openings in the career field. As I stated earlier, there
are some requirement to becoming an art director, and fulfilling those requirements can be difficult.
You have to at least find a job and keep it competitively to sustain an income. In a Houston Chronicle
article online by Megan Torrance mentions painters like me have trouble finding work and
commissions, ...the BLS reports that the number of charitable donations has been declining in recent
years. In spite of this, interest in the occupation has remained steady and led to a larger pool of
qualified candidate... the BLS projects the market will remain competitive from 2010 to 2020
(Chron.com). The artist occupying the art and design field is increasing while the number of jobs
openings is staying at a steady rate. This is why it is important to be versatile in multimedia of art, so
that you have more opportunities at different jobs in the art field. To be an art director you pretty much
have to be versatile in the different media s and have a few different positions under your belt to
qualify for the position. Another disadvantage to be

Invictus By William Ernest Henley
Invictus is a poem written by William Ernest Henley. The theme of this poem is about having the will
to survive in hardships. This poem tells us that you control your own fate. This poem is lyrical as it is
expressing the writer s emotions about his hardships in life, but also didactic as it teaches you to forge
your own path in life. This poem follows a ABAB rhyme pattern, and has four stanzas which includes
four quatrains. The first stanza indicates the difficulty in life and thanks thegods for the strength they
ve given him. The second stanza tells us of this soul who has never complained even when things are
of misfortune, and would rather endure than to lose pride. The third stanza describes this threatening
world we live in, and

Florence Kelley s Speech On Child Labor Rights
On July 22, 1905, Florence Kelley, motivated by the plight of these young women and children,
affected drastically by the lack of child labor laws, delivered a speech to the National American
Women s Suffrage Association in Philadelphia. Kelley s strategies, including word choice and tone,
persuade her audience to join forces to help free the American children from toil. Beginning her
speech, Kelley applies her credibility by placing statistics regarding the controversy of child labor
laws, revealing that she is informed about this topic. Her credibility has a great connection to her
purpose, she claims that the number of working girls doubled from census to census and girls from
twelve to twenty years are working when they should not have to. Kelley then manifests her concern
over these working girls by explaining that, tonight, while everybody else is snoozing away in bed,
these several thousand little girls will be working in textile mills, (16 17). These words make her
audience feel pity concerning those young girls and are a great reason to act against the unfair laws
and regulations that violate both their human and women s rights, especially when they aren t even
getting paid fairly. By appealing to their emotion Florence Kelley wishes to push the women to act on
her proposal of joining together and helping the poor young girls of their nation. Kelley continues to
approach and influence the women s sentiments and hopefully their actions by including her
scandalized argument that in Georgia there is no restriction whatever! A girl of six or seven years, just
tall enough to reach the bobbins, may work eleven hours by day or by night, (29 31). She decides to
include the bobbins of sewing machines in factories to illustrate how short and how young they are to
be working in dangerous factories where their rights are ignored, girls at that age should worry more
about going to school instead of sacrificing themselves to bring money for bread to their homes. One
would understand that many families are living through poverty due to the economy being at a very
depressing state and they need the most they can do to increase their financial position to survive in
their society, then again, girls should be

Essay about The Benefits of Online Universities
It is a well known fact that sometimes teachers are not able to respond to challenging questions and
students have to look for the answers themselves. When I, as a student experienced the same, I made
the decision to learn such topics from internet sources to compliment what we have studied in class.
The result was astonishing; even though I haven t fully studied in the classroom, I could pass my
exams successfully. So, I came to the conclusion that online education may easily surpass the
traditional, classroom study one. However, there are some people who believe it is impossible . I have
compared both pros and cons of 2 education styles, and detected in which field they will be beneficial,
and in which their implementation will cause ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ilyas Nurseitov who is school councilor of Nazarbayev Intellectual School, which means he is a
specialist in education, states, to be a student of online university you have to be stimulated person,
otherwise you have nothing to do in online university . One more benefit of online universities. Online
universities have to make their schedule on their own, hence they are able to focus on concerning
study topics more than others. According to a study by the U.S. Department of Education : on average,
students in online learning conditions performed modestly better than those receiving face to face
instruction. Using over 1,000 empirical studies, the DOE found that time was the additive that helped
students study better. The report noted benefits in studies in which online learners spent more time on
task than students in the face to face condition. This survey conducted by U.S. department of
education used standard deviation methods which known by statisticians as a best way to make a
survey. Hence, I suppose it is a good quality report. Chat rooms and forums in online universities
enable students to communicate neglecting their modesty or timidity. One may behave too shy, even if
he studied a lot, and perish his marks. Online education makes everyone s voice heard, and promote
them to easily express themselves. Katie Lepi, the reporter of Edudemic, supports my opinion. She

The Intervention of the Judicial System in Violence...
The Intervention of the Judicial System in Violence Against Women
Women in this country have been a part of violence for an enormous amount of time. This violence
includes pornography, rape, and even domestic violence. The United States judicial system has
intervened into the so called private sphere and eradicated women in society, providing precedent and
even updating statutes as well as other types of legislation. Without intervention women may still have
no rights as human beings and the victims of much worse violence. Not to say that the violence that
comes about is not extremely painful and an obscene amount of torture for women, but without our
judicial system to minimize some of these violent acts would be in total chausses. ... Show more

The last act of violence discussed will be domestic violence. Why women stay in relationships where
they are being battered and abused? All of these acts of violence are dangerous and put lives in danger.
The judicial systems intervention may not stop all of these horrible incidents but may protect the lives
of those who wish to be protected.
Although there are exceptions to every rule, depending on the type of porn and in what manner it is
presented or acted out determines how violent it is perceived. According to Andrea Dworkin, ?Words
alone, words and pictures, moving or still, creates systematic harm to women in the form of
discrimination and physical hurt.? Although this may be true there are some women who have actually
chosen this profession for pleasure and enjoy this type of industry. As we know pornography is legal
and is considered freedom of speech, written in the 1st Amendment of the Constitution. There are two
levels of speech, speech and non speech. The courts recognize ?speech? as being protected and hold it
to the highest level of scrutiny, but as for ?non speech? rational basis is implemented. Unprotected
speech consists of ?fighting words.? Also obscenity is unprotected speech. The whole reason we
protect speech is part of us and therefore recognized as knowledge. Pornography has been considered
as speech unless children are

Barefoot Vs Shoid Lab Report
Introduction: Running, it is the simplest of movements: right foot, left foot, right foot, and the simplest
of actions: run, relax, and breathe. Many individuals participate in this form of exercise because they
enjoy how good it makes them feel, they enjoy feeling the strength of their body while they run, and
they enjoy using it as a way of relieving their stress. There are many other factors to take into
consideration that effect a persons running such as, the type of footwear they are using, the distance
they are running, and the speed of which they are running at. The objective of the main article was to
research and compare the differences in stride length, hip, knee and ankle angles in runners when

participants were randomly assigned which condition to complete first, barefoot vs. shod. During the
experiment the participants ran for two minutes at 3.05 m*s^ 1, rested for two minutes, then ran for
two minutes at Then had a two minute rest period and completed the same procedure for the other
condition. Each participants stride length was assessed using the distance measured between the first
and second initial contact of the left foot. An alternative way that this experiment could have been
conducted would be to increase the number of participants being studied. A greater number of
participants would diversify the level of athleticism. Another change that could be made to this
experiment would be to test using multiple types of shoes, like a minimalist shoe, a stability shoe, and
a motion controlled shoe to see if the type of shoe causes an effect on stride length. Overall the
changes made in this alternative method, would diversify the results so they could be applied to more
individuals, and not just

Essay On Food In American Culture
Culture of food in Israel and Palestine
This quote illustrates national identity and ethnicity through food, Tell me what you eat, and I ll tell
you who you are Brillat Savarin in 1825. Food can showcase a lot about a nation and its people
because culture and food, creates unity in a nation. In the case of Israel the Zionist organization used
food as a tool to create a sense of identity and nationalism for the people of Israel by encouraging
consumption of Kosher and Israeli produced foods. Israel like the United States, is an immigrant
nation; so naturally many different foods and recipes are brought with the new immigrants from the
countries they came from Europe to Africa. It s great to see, how food is used to unite a nation as one.

When you look at Palestine and Israel regionally, you will get of course like all countries different
regional cuisine. The article Falafel: A National Icon , discusses start of falafel becoming a national
icon for Israel; for instance when the first Jewish immigrants moved to the Middle East, because they
wanted to adapt to the new land and become local, they began to pick up the Arab food like hummus
and falafel which is very prevalent in Israeli cuisine today. It is an interesting issue to look at when
nations argue over the origin of certain foods, like in the article, Hummus Wars , which takes about the
conflict over hummus between Lebanon and Israel, although the same argument does occur with
Palestine as well but to say that a certain dish belongs to one place over another is somewhat absurd;
that would be like Italy arguing with New York over pizza. As long as people travel around so will

Dietetics Personal Statement
Personal Statement
I am seeking a dietetic internship at California State University Fresno, to continue my journey in
dietetics. At first, obtaining a college education meant more than just assuring a better future but
breaking the chain in a long line of poverty and illiteracy. As my mother was a single parent and
immigrant to the United States with less than a first grade education, her desire to have a better life for
me has always been present. Being a first generation Mexican American and the first in my family to
graduate college, I consider myself privileged to have the opportunities my parents never had.
Although, I did not know it at the time, my journey in dietetics started after high school. I was
fortunate at such a young age to work in a convalescent home as a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA).
While caring for the residents, I discovered an innate need to care for others. I gained as much from

A Report on the BMW Group Essay
A Report on the BMW Group
Introduction
As a result of the increased demand of cars, the competition among car companies is becoming
intense. Although the market of car is the biggest growing market in the world, there are still some
companies who make cars failing year after year. However, there are some outstanding car companies
such as The BMW Group performing distinctly.
The history of BMW is one of ground breaking innovations and exceptional automobiles, including
motorcycles and aircraft engines. It has a history with people of vision and of pioneering creation in
the world of aviation engineering. Already we can begin to see that the BMW group is a well known
and significant player in its market.
BMW was founded in 1916 as an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The main driving force behind the decision of BMW to turn to globalization was competition from
global companies in Germany, the United States and Japan who are major competitors in the luxury
segment. The automobile industry is highly globalised with many major manufactures operating all
over the world. Automobiles built in one region are sold, with necessary changes, around the world.
The main force for global convergence was the virtual disappearance of the national manufactures
being squeezed out by the international giants and the standardization of markets across international
boundaries. Forced by international regulatory bodies at regional level and fuelled by ever more
intensive global communication.
Innovation
THE BMW Group, as one of the world s most innovative companies, shows that Germany still leads
the global field as a centre of innovation, says German Federal Minister Wolfgang Clement, who is
patron of the award.
BMW try to innovate new ways to stay ahead of their competitors. They designed a new
manufacturing plant where the cars would move down the assembly line on an independently powered
gantry. The new technology would produce sound waves so that collisions can be avoided, thus
reducing the need for more workers and also reducing the risk of unwanted accidents in the plant.
The BMW Group is conducting research into systems that optimize the interaction between driver, car

The Reform Of The Health Care Reform Essay
The latest health care reform has done what few policies manage to do sicken both republicans and
progressive democrats. While we can all agree that a reform of the health care system is sorely
needed, we must also acknowledge that Obamacare is not the cure all we so desperately require.
Rather, President Obama, like a medieval barber, prescribed a health care reform that treated the
symptoms of our flawed system rather than the actual disease. The subsidization of health insurance
providers has proven ineffective at providing affordable coverage for all. Certainly one is likely to
hear the various incendiary talking points of both the proponents and opponents. Whether it s the
republican candidates blaspheming Obamacare as socialism, or the administration praising the success
of health care for all, it is difficult to actually find constructive dialogue. We are purview to many
sound bites, but few actual solutions. We have witnessed heated debates, but rarely do we witness
intelligent discourse. If beneficial reform is to be crafted and implemented, we must first acknowledge
the issues and inconsistencies of the current system and begin to explore alternate methods of
providing health care to the American people. This diagnoses of the flaws in our health care system
must start with identifying and redefining the social constructs of America. In most other civilized
nations, it is generally accepted that it is in the best interest of the public that every individual be

Lab: Ionic and Covalent Bonds
Introduction:
The purpose of this experiment was to explore the properties of chemical substances that can be used
to identify the types of bonds in a chemical substance using a laboratory procedure. The two types of
bonds being identified were ionic and covalent. Based on a substance s properties, how can you
determine whether its bonds are ionic or covalent? This is the question I posed before starting the
experiment. An ionic bond is a bond that results from the attraction between oppositely charges ions;
one atom gives another atom an electron. Combinations of metals and nonmetals typically form ionic
bonds. A covalent bond is a bond that results from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

King Arthur Research Paper
King Arthur is placed into two categories amongst historians. The first is a legend of King Arthur but
it s nothing more than a myth. The second is historical Arthur, which believes that he did exist. Arthur
is a prominent figure in history regardless of the debate over his existence. Historians and
archeologists have spent a great amount of time trying to prove who Arthur is and many of these
researches have different objectives and ideologies to this monumental figure in history. Arthur has
supporters but also has critics in the issue of his existence. R.G. Collingwood, Geoffrey Ashe, and
Leslie Alcock are all advocates of Arthur, but they have different arguments, methodologies and
writing styles for the historical Arthur. Collingwood ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In his journal article, The Willing Suspension of Disbelief, Dave Burnham said, He wrote no more
than a few pages about Arthur, but the vivid image he conjured became accepted as real by students,
the public and some historians. This idea was largely unchallenged for over thirty years and has power
even today. Collingwood made major claims with such little evidence. He laid out his observations
and believed that s exactly how it happened. Even though Collingwood s ideas were widely accepted,
he wrote as if there no other possible conclusion. In his book Roman Britain and English Settlements,
Collingwood said, The historicity of the man can hardly be called into question. The fact that his name
in later ages was a magnet drawing to itself all manner of folklore and fable, and that an Arthurian
cycle grew up composed partly of events transferred from other contexts, no more proves him a
fictitious character than similar fables prove it of Alexander or Aristotle, Vergil or Roland. It tends
rather to prove the opposite. The place which the name of Arthur occupies in Celtic legend is easiest to
explain on the hypothesis that he really lived, and was a great champion of the British people.
Collinwood writes with confidence and writes that the readers should not hesitate or doubt his
existence. I believe Collingwood is so assured in his work because he is a philosopher and idealist

How The Pig Farming Industry Affects Our Environment
The hog farming industry has always been one of controversy when it comes to its effects on the
environment, and with the green house gas emissions a pig farm produces and the spread of disease
through swine this is with good reason. Although the truth is that the industry has come a very long
way in the past 50 years in regards to its sustainability. The pig farming industry as a whole has been
able to reduce its overall environmental impact and natural resources use by 50% in the past 50 years
according to a study done by Garth Boyd a well known researcher on environmental footprints
(Boyd). Even with the improvements made by the pig farming industry there is still a need for change
and major improvement in sustainable practices. First I will discuss how the pig farming industry
effects our environment. Although it is true a pig farm needs water and land to operate, the use of
those natural resources is not the major problem with pig farms. It is what goes in the air that is of
concern. The pig manure and the decomposition of the manure over time release three major gases of
concern, methane, ammonia, and hydrogen sulfide. There are other gaseous compounds that may be
emitted from decomposing manure but these three are the principal gases in emissions. The level of
emissions released by a farm will vary based on the amount of manure being managed as well as the
type of manure management system the farm has in place. Flush pit with lagoon, deep pig with below

with Western Imperialism . Their reactions to western interference would lay a foundation for their

Essay on Foucault Panopticism
Panopticism by Michel Focault
Works Cited Not Included
Our society is not one of spectacle, but of surveillance; under the surface of images, one invests bodies
in depth; behind the great abstraction of exchange, there continues the meticulous concrete training of
useful forces; the circuits of communication are the supports of an accumulation and a centralization
of knowledge; the play of signs defines the anchorages of power; it is not that the beautiful totality of
the individual is amputated, repressed, altered by our social order, it is rather that the individual is
carefully fabricated in it, according to a whole technique of forces and bodies. (pp.333 34)

The persons with the plague (lepers were included in this group) were always observed to account for
their presence. These people were supposed to be present at their windows for attendance. Where they
not present at the time, they were marked as dead. Their family would be removed, the house would
be cleaned out, perfumed, and then, a mere four hours later, people would move back in. Obviously,
the fear of not being observed would be strong in this situation, a direct result of the drastic measures
taken once someone s presence could not be observed. Though this fear has the opposite motivation of
the healthy citizens, who, knowing they are being watched, are afraid to do wrong, it works on the
same basic principle. That if one knows they are being watched, it remains a constant consideration in
their mind, regardless of the presence of an observer, the fear will always be present.
The Panopticon, a prison described by Foucault, is a machine for dissociating the see/being seen dyad:
in the peripheric ring, one is totally seen, without ever seeing (321, Foucault). This literally means that
in the formation of the panopticon those who are being seen can not see one another and the one who
sees everything can never be seen. That is the most important tool of the panopticon. Foucault makes
this assumption about today s society by saying that we are always being watched whether we know it
or not. One always keeps an eye over their shoulder as a

What Does White Man s Burden Mean
In the poem White Man s Burden, white man s burden is a phrase that came about in the controversy
about the United States procession of the Philippines after the Spanish American war. It was a theory
that the white Europeans would have to bring a sense of properness to the non white Europeans due to
the fact that they did not have a sense of properness. In the poem, it is suggested that the citizens
acquire a skill from practice. In the poem, it reads Take up the White Man s burden Have done with
childish days The lightly proferred laurel, The easy, ungrudged praise. Comes now, to search your
manhood (Kipling). The acquired skill is that the non white Europeans have acquired the skill of

best describes the justification due to the fact that The White Man s Burden, explains the civilizing
mission as the motion to make all citizens right minded by the white Europeans. The white Europeans
had the mission to civilize non proper cultures. The same line mentioned above also confirms the idea
that the non white European had adjusted to the ways of the white European s and has accomplished
the goal of becoming a man. Social Darwinism can also be found in this poem. . Social Darwinism is
the theory that tries to explain the success of specific social group. This term can be used to describe
the tone of the poem due to the fact that it is expressed that a specific group of people is far more
superior and educated than another group. The line Take up the White Man s Burden (Kipling) is
evidence enough to support this

memory capacity of the individual and their ability to effectively engage in the distraction technique.
This study aims to extend on previous research pertaining to working memory capacity, distractibility
and pain perception. The objective of this study is to observe the effect distraction has on altering pain
perception relative to an individual s working memory capacity. In this study we will utilize the
operational span task (OSPAN) developed by Turner and Engle (1989) to split the participants into
high and low working memory span groups dependent on their OSPAN scores. Participants will then
engage in a simulated pain task under two conditions: distraction and no distraction. This study will
include 40 participants; 20 in the low working memory span group and 20 in the high working
memory span group. We expect that the low working memory span group will, on average, report
higher pain ratings than the high working memory span group in the experimental (distraction)
condition. We hope that this study will show that the inverse relationship between working memory
and distractibility will have an effect on how people perceive pain. We hope that the current study will
guide future research in exploring alternative non pharmacological methods to relieve pain.
Keywords: working memory, OSPAN, pain perception, distractibility

Thomas Paine Influence
Would the revolutionary war in the New World have developed without Thomas Paine? Political
activist Thomas Paine created the first influential piece of writing, Common Sense, about retrieving
American independence over Great Britain. Common Sense was a famous 50 page pamphlet
discussing the possibility of creating a democratic republican party, and advocating independence
from Great Britain. Thomas Paine had ideas of independence before he wrote Common Sense, but the
American Public and his comrades motivated him even more about the prospect of independence, and
influenced him to write the pamphlet. Thomas Paine, contributing as a major factor in the
development of the American Revolution, was persistent on enforcing his ideas, and even helped ...

He had already written papers about the injustices and cruelties the Americans had to face while being
overruled by Britain. Thomas Paine was the only American who had the audacity to write about
gaining independence from Britain. He was the one who believed in America and its citizens to
become a world superpower, and to grow into making their beloved country special. Written in his
essay Age of Reason, he said, I saw, or at least I thought I saw, a vast scene opening itself to the world
in the affairs of America; and it appeared to me, that unless the Americans changed the plan they were
then pursuing, with respect to the government of England, and declared themselves independent, they
would not only involve themselves in a multiplicity of new difficulties, but shut out the prospect that
was then offering itself to mankind through their means, (44). In this passage of The Age of Reason,
he stated his motive to write Common Sense. His motive to write Common Sense was for his patriots
and the country as a whole. Not to make his political status rise, but to help America progress as an
independent country. It wasn t about him and his career as an author, but about having colonial unity
amongst it s citizens, and fight together to make America advance. Not only was their motive from the
American public, but also from his fellow comrades, like Ben Franklin. They would frequently discuss
upon this matter of independence and other international news, and this would have a significant
influence into the writing of his persuasive essay. He spent hours daily discussing with his fellow
moderns. It is obvious that Paine incorporated the conversations and correspondence with his
compatriots into his essay. The long discussions that he had with Ben Franklin and his other friends
gave him good ideas and a good understanding of their current situation. These long discussions were

Should Children Be Allowed To Play Violent Video Games...
In the article Should Children be allowed to Play Violent Video Games the author states that although
there are many different pros and cons and there is no right answer to the central question. The author
states that the decision of children playing violent games be left up to them. In the article the author
asserts that one argument to allow children to play video games that showcase violence is that it can
act as a stress reliever and help control their emotions. This argument is a valid one by those who
believe this but for those who have a counter argument say that this is not true. The counter argument
to video games being helpful is that they are harmful. There is no inbetween or balance between these
two sides the author suggests that the two opposing sides will never come to an agreement. The
negative side says that video games make children more violent and less capable to deal with real
world problems. The argument of Children being allowed to play violent video games is ultimately a
decision that a parent would need to make with a compromise between the child and the parent. In the
discussions of children playing violent video games, one controversial issue has been weather it
beneficial or not. On the one hand opposers argues that Violent video games ruins kids abilities to
handle real world problems. On the other hand defenders opposes saying that these games are
beneficial for children. My own view is that video games can be beneficial for kids. In my

America Must Invest in Energy Efficiency Essays
America Must Invest in Energy Efficiency
In recent years our country has had many debates over what must be done to lessen the amount of oil
that our country consumes. It is well known that we need to make some type of change to help not
only the environment, but also lessen our reliance on imported oil. President Bush recently announced
his new plan that could someday greatly reduce that amount of oil that Americans use by replacing oil
with hydrogen fuel cells. Although this plan is a step in the right direction, it is not the answer. There
are far too many downsides that could actually hurt our country in the long run. One problem is that
the plan proposed by Bush will take far too long before any changes will be seen. ... Show more

. If cars were required to run on 55 miles per gallon, the U.S. would save about five million barrels per
day. This alone is about seven times the amount of oil that was imported from Iraq alone last year
(Kennedy 11). All major auto companies can already make cars that run on seventy miles per gallon;
meaning that Clinton s goal was nearly reached. However, because funding is being cut by the new
plan, these cars will most likely never be available in the large market. We do need to someday totally
end our reliance on oil, especially in cars, but why stop funding a plan that would have an immediate
effect? Money is simply being wasted due to the fact that millions of dollars were spent on a plan that
is being ended because funding is suddenly being spent on new areas of research. We need to continue
funding Clinton s plan even if we do start more research in hydrogen fuel cells.
A second major problem with the plan is not easy to see at first. You must look much closer at what
types of research is being done. There are two ways that hydrogen fuel cells can be made. One is by a
reaction with oxygen. These cells are about 70% efficient and the only emissions are water vapor. The
second way it by using oil or coal to make the cells. These cells are about 33% efficient and release
harmful emissions into the atmosphere (Abelson 1469). I feel that we should fund research into using
oxygen as opposed to fossil fuels when making hydrogen

that we live in right now, anything is possible and that is for the good and the bad. Like represented in

The main characteristic to classify crystal or glass is the content of lend in the glass. Lead that in
crystal make its more easily cut and engraved are the presence of the lead soften the glass in crystal.
The lead also increases the weight of the crystal glass and light will diffract though the glass. For the
glass stemware has the lighter weight than crystal glass and light will not diffract though the glass.
Besides, lead has tendency to filter out the crystal from the lead glassware. Nowadays, crystal glass is
unleaded because its use barium carbonate and zinc and titanium oxides to displace the lead oxide.
Those glasses are similar properties as lead crystal such as temperature control. Unleaded glass has
lighter weight but its has the similar characteristic of refractive index with lead crystal. The highest
quality crystal glass can provide a better wine testing experience than glassware but the higher cost of
the glass are not attract customer to purchase it. Crystal glass is very fragile so customer may use

Filing Systems May Not Be Electronic Or Manual
Filing systems may either be electronic or manual. An organisation will probably utilise a combination
of both systems, choosing the most suitable arrangement for the data that is to be stored. Regardless of
the type of system adopted, it should be effective and efficient, accessible, accurate, reliable and user
friendly. In a school setting, both electronic and manual filing systems are used on a daily basis. To
give an example; A manual filing system is used to store individual pupil s confidential information.
Each pupil has their own file; this is filed alphabetically and held in a filing cabinet in the school
office. The child s file contains confidential information such as date of birth, address, family history
and medical details. This filing cabinet is kept locked at all times to ensure that children s information
is protected and respected and only available for viewing by authorised staff. An electronic filing
system is used to record the school s financial transactions. This is a very thorough and rigorous
method for storing such important details. The system generates orders; payments and reports that
enable the head teacher and school business manager to monitor spend and control budgets. This
system is only accessible to the school business manager and access is protected by a password. Filing
systems may be used to store information that is readily available to anyone to browse, such as
telephone numbers of schools within the local education authority.

Purpose:
The purpose of the article Why Tough Teachers Get Good Results is that the younger generation needs
to learn how to be more confident and learn how to fix their mistakes when criticized. Lipman states
in the article, studies have shown, among other things, the benefits of moderate childhood stress; how
praise kills kids self esteem; and why grit is a better predictor of success that SAT scores Lipman s
point is that every student should learn to have grit and even if a teacher is strict you should still be
confident in yourself and your decisions.
Speaker
The speaker of the article is the author herself, Joanne Lipman, she is the former student of a tough
teacher. Lipman states, I had a teacher once who called his students idiots when they screwed up. He
was our orchestra conductor, a fierce Ukrainian immigrant named Jerry Kupchynsky... This quotation

The Great Gatsby Freudian Analysis Essay
A Freudian Analysis of The Great Gatsby
Sigmund Freud, a psychological genius, created an entirely new system that dealt with the
understanding of the human personality. This technique, called psychoanalysis, consists of three
subdivisions. The id responds directly to his or her instincts, while the superego relies on his or her
sense of guilt. Lastly, the ego represents reality, or the balance between the id and superego. In F. Scott
Fitzgerald s novel, The Great Gatsby, the three levels of subconsciousness are ideally filled by the
main characters, Tom Buchanan, Jay Gatsby, and Nick Carraway. The id is not affected by reality,
logic or the everyday world, as it operates within the unconscious part of the mind (McLeod). Tom
Buchanan lived in his own mind. Listening only to his own instincts, he proved to be impulsive and
selfish. He knew what he wanted, and he would not give up until he achieved his goal. Tom did not

conception he was faithful to the end (Fitzgerald 98). He even changed his name so that he could start

1. a)
Copper is formed by metallic bonds. This is because it is formed by a strong attraction between the
closely packed positive metal ions and because these are surrounded by delocalised electrons to form
outer shells. Due to this, we can also deduce that its structure is a Giant Metallic Lattice, meaning that
it has a high melting and boiling point, conducts electricity and is insoluble.
Bromine formed by covalent bonds in between two bromine atoms, since bromine is a diatomic
element. Each bromine atom shares one electron with each other, in order to complete their outer

Pictures Don amp;#8217;t Always Paint a Thousand Words
John Berger makes a bold statement in saying amp;#8220; No other relic or text from the past can
offer such a direct testimony about the world which surrounded other people at other times. In this
respect images are more precise and richer than literature, ; (Ways of Reading, 106). This statement is
very untrue. Literature has been the focal point of all modern learning.. Literature lets the reader feel
what the author is thinking, not just see it as you would in a painting. This can be proven after reading
Berger amp;#8216;s descriptions of paintings in Ways of Seeing and also reading parts of literature

woman looking up at something from her bed. He writes amp;#8220; there is a complicity between the
women and the painter. This complicity includes both retinence and abandon , day and night. The
curtain of the bed which Hendrickje lifts up her hand , marks the threshold between daytime and
nighttime. ;( 129) From this painting I could not see any of this. The writing paints this picture in the
readers mind, much better than the actual image. This explanation also enables a reader to relate to the
writing. From this writing I can see this girl in the bed and almost feel what she is thinking. From the
picture all I saw was a girl laying in bed, nothing more.

The Influence Of WRKY Genedation Factors
As we are trying to determine how FLS2 is regulated without the influence of WRKY transcription
factors, we want to prevent the WRKY transcription factors from recognizing and binding to the
promoter. Therefore, we mutate the W box promoter motif. Both forward sequences (+) have a point
mutation at the second position, so when transcription factors are trying bind, they would not
recognize the mutated sequence thus not binding. In addition, the third sequence ( ) is a reverse
transcript and it is complementary to the second (+) strand.
WRKY transcription factors are involved in regulating FLS2 gene expression. Based on the result

The FLS2 expression is under the spatiotemporal control as its transcriptional activation depends on
ethylene signaling (EIN 3 and EIL1), which also involves the binding of transcription factors.
Therefore, different stressors cause different bindings of the transcription factors and lead to a
different level of gene expression in tissues.
We could use CRISPR Cas 9 complex to determine whether WRKY75 transcription factor directly
regulates FLS2 expression. First, we would use two sets of root samples, a control sample with regular
a WRKY75 promoter, and an experimental sample that the WRKY74 promoter has been knocked out
by CRISPR Cas 9 complex. Next, we looked up the WRKY75 promoter sequence in the NCBI
database and created a guide RNA sequence from the DNA sequence of the particular site we are
looking for to cleave. Then, this will allow the Cas9 to come, bind and cleave out the WRKY75
promoter. Once the WRKY75 promoter is being knocked out, transcription factors would not be able
to bind and FLS2 gene expression would not be turned on in theory. After that, EMSA could be used
to detect whether the WRK75 binds to the FLS2 promoter and

The Impact Of Media On Children s Life
Introduction Socialisation is the process an individual experiences to become a unique individual and
an active member of society. Through socialisation, individuals accept and acquire beliefs, roles,
motives, values and behaviours. The process of socialisation is influenced by many factors including:
family, school, peers, location and the media. The impact the media has on socialisation, particularly
in Western countries, is immense, as it has the ability to influence ideas, opinions, attitudes and images
to many people. The media is a macro agent in socialisation, as it presents people with ideas and
generalised views of society from beyond their micro worlds. Family is another important agent of
socialisation, as for most children, their family is responsible for their initial socialisation process.
Families have a major and long lasting effect on children s lives. The home and the family is the first
environment of learning for the child, where a child s first acquisition of knowledge, skills, attitudes
and values begins. School is another important agent of socialisation. The official purpose of school is
to teach knowledge and life skills. However, students don t just learn from the academic curriculum.
In school, we also learn skills to prepare us to become functional members of society. The focus of
this report is to compare how the agents of socialisation have changed over time. The primary research

The Iron Mill By Rebecca Harding Davis
In Life in the Iron Mills, Rebecca Harding Davis tells the story of Hugh Wolfe, a lower class man
whose love of beauty and desire to move up in the world ultimately leads to his mental decline and
demise. Wolfe lives in a town of smothering grey smog and works in an iron mill reminiscent of Hell,
places that induce hopelessness and despair by appearance. In contrast to his surroundings, Wolfe
possesses a fierce love of beauty and a talent of sculpting with korl, both of which are frequently
associated with higher socioeconomic classes. Initially, it appears that Davis means to reinforce the
common associations of beauty with the upper class and unseemliness with the lower class. In the
story, beauty can be associated with the upper class characters through their polished appearances and
admiration of art, inciting a positive association in response to beautiful imagery; unseemliness, on the
other hand, can be associated with the lower class and negative feelings because the mill is
reminiscent of hell and the characters are generally unattractive. However, when looked at with a
closer lens, it appears the story cannot be taken at face value and the typical feelings surrounding
beauty and ugliness do not apply in the story. Appearances can be deceiving: within Life in the Iron
Mills, ugliness represents opportunity whereas the beauty serves as a distraction. By juxtaposing
unsightly and attractive, Davis shows that mobility is possible only through unattractive, hard work

cold for snow. Toronto has the second warmest temperatures which are: 8.6°C, 16°C, 10°C, and 10°C,
in Toronto there were 3 days without precipitation but one day had drifting snow, the lack of
precipitation is cause by the cold temps and not enough heat for the water cycle, it s also due to the
low latitudes and Lake Ontario keeps a slight amount of heat. Saskatoon was the coldest of the three

Life zones on a mountain reflect the changes, plants at the base are the same as those in surrounding
countryside, but no trees at all can grow above the timber line. Snow crowns the highest elevations.
Another factor is landforms, air masses meet at a mountain and it is forced upwards and this has an
effect, the air cools. Air can only keep some moisture, once it reaches its limit the moisture is
offloaded in the form of rain. The colder the air, the less water vapor it can contain so as the air rises
and cools it leads to precipitation. Vancouver has mountains and is heated by the water. Toronto has
many pavement roads the ground cools quickly, but it has a slight high elevation which cause it to
experience cold weather. Saskatoon has no vegetation and has a lower elevation which cause it to be
really cold because air is free and circulates to move cold air to the

Capitalism And Consumerism
Some would say that the advertisers are responsible for building the hype and the consumer is just
responding to a once in a lifetime deal (that happens every year). Some have even gone as far as
blaming capitalism and the manner in which it functions within our society. If you recall though,
James Twitchell blames the consumer and not these other outlets. Some might blame this on
capitalism, but one can love the freedom and innovation of capitalism and hate the materialism of
consumerism... However this isn t because capitalism promotes consumerism. Capitalism is just an
economic system an imperfect one that that reflects the values we put into it, so if we feed it
consumerism, that s what we ll get. We, the consumers, are guilty of turning Thanksgiving into a
consumerist holiday (Daniel). This isn t to say that everyone that participates in Black Thursday or
Friday is guilty of consumerism, maybe they don t have a family to spend the holiday with or maybe
shopping with family is there means of spending quality time together. The important thing is that we
are all consumers in this society and we must be aware of the production companies ability to trigger
that within our brains the need to buy more and more things we don t necessarily need and sometimes
even want. Playing the victim in all of this proves that you are aware of the tactics used to get you to
use your purchasing power and inturn you are aware of your own ability to change the way
consumerism is currently

Who Is Everything Farmed In David Klass s Firestorm
David Klass, the author of the novel Firestorm, wanted the readers to protect our resources, wildlife,
and environment before we use up everything. The character that really cares about nature is Eko. Eko
is very saddened by the fact that all of nature is gone in the future and only domesticated animals
remain. Nothing left like this. The beauty. The diversity. All gone. Nothing wild. Nothing free.
Everything farmed. (116) in this quote Eko is telling Jack that animals in the ocean are gone only
jellyfish and sea lice remain with toxic waters. Eko also describes all the things humans did to destroy
the world permanently to be irreparably. Sure. Pollution. The destruction of the ozone layer. And a

Health Risks, current legis (team, 2013)lation and critical comparison Essay
There are many positive outcomes to working with computers on a daily basis. Having access to a
huge array of resources with a click of a button (World Wide Web), being able to conveniently store
large amounts of data in digital form and using a machine that can process millions of things per
second are just a few of these benefits. However, these positives can come at a price. As technology
has improved and become more accessible, so has our reliance of it. More people own a personal
computer now than ever before. A study conducted in America (Acute Computer Related Injuries
Treated in U.S. Emergency Departments, 1994 2006) showed that computer related ... Show more

This increased use of computers, at home and within the workplace, combined with the amount of
injuries that can be sustained has prompted the government to issue new legislation s to accommodate
the risks associated with them. While these new legislation s serve as a requirement in a work
environment they are only a recommendation at home. The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974,
which states the general regulations and responsibilities that can be applied across a wide variety of
industries, has had a separate piece of legislation added to it to encompass the risks associated with
computers and other forms of displays; The Health and safety (display screen equipment) regulations
1992. This was put into place to outline the dangers to, and requirements of both the employer and the
employee, ensuring they maintain proper safety whilst partaking in the use of computers in the
workplace. The responsibilities of the employer include a thorough risk assessment of the workstation,
the provision of eye tests and training in regards of the risks to health whilst using the equipment and
how to combat them, while the employee must co operate with the employer, take responsibility for
their own safety and those of others, and to use the equipment of its intended use. The legislation also
refers to the type of equipment that is provided, primarily requiring them to be fit for purpose and
adjustable.

The Habits Of Highly Effective People By Stephen R. Covey...
7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey
When I went through professor s required book list, I recognized the book, 7 Habits of Highly
Effective People, at my first glance. I do remember that I read its Chinese version which was a present
from my grandfather almost ten years ago when I was a teenager. Shortly after feeling excited, I was a
little embarrassed because I barely remember the 7 habits. Now as an adult almost a decade later, after
finished the book, the original work, I was impressed. The immaturity made me believe that most of
the points of Covey were too obvious and trite to make sense. But now those things Covey talked
about are actually tough challenges in my life. The precondition of the Covey s theory is that a lot of
people fix the problems in a scattershot approach which will eventually lead to chaos or
disappointment for the most time. The author s answer to this is to be an effective person. People
needs to learn to solve problems from personal life, study and work with an approach based on a same
core values. The book is about how to develop the core values basically through the seven habits in
order to be a more effective person. The seven habits also help to achieve greater insights into
leadership and management in people s personal and professional life in the effective way.
The seven habits are: 1. Be proactive 2. Begin with the end in mind 3. Put first things first 4. Think
win win 5. First understand, then be understood 6.

The Medical Models Of Health
Models of Health
Technology, inventions, science, cures, research, medicine and medical practice have all changed and
grown over the past 150 years as the human race gains a greater understanding about the world around
us. It is therefore undeniable that medical models of health should follow in this trend, from the
introduction of generalised treaties such as the Alma Ata to specified reports such as that of the Black
report have help guide models of health towards that of the social model and away from the previously
prevalent biomedical model; therefore better accommodating the diseases that the world faces today
such as Rheumatic Fever or Rheumatic Heart Disease.
Acute Rheumatic Fever (ARF) is a preventable and controllable chronic heart condition that is a
consequence of pharyngeal infection by Group A streptococcus. The infection causes flu like
symptoms but if left untreated has the ability to cause fibrosis of the heart valves, which can lead to
heart disease, heart failure and eventually death; this progression of the disease is redefined as
Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD). ARF is easily treatable, achieved by a 10 day course of antibiotics
or an injection (World Heart Federation, 2015).
Jane, Baker and Venugopals article mentions that ARF has been associated with; household income,
New Zealand Deprivation Index, crowded households and ethnicity. Using the biomedical model the
ability to fully understand the complete picture and encompass all the causation of this

Things Fall Apart By Michael Obi Essay
Obi is a bright and enthusiastic young man who is excited to find out that he will be the new
headmaster of a school that has been in desperate need of help for some time. Obi was considered a
vital teacher and he and his wife are both forward thinking and eager to share the modern life with
everyone. He expects to make a good job of this grand opportunity and show people how a school
should be run. He plans to implement modern methods and demand high standards of teaching. These
new additions to the old culture and society brought a negative impact causing many people s lives to
be changed forever.
Michael Obi s ambition is accomplished at age twenty six, he s appointed to change an unprogressive
secondary school. Young, Energetic, and optimistic as he is, Obi hopes to progress the educational
mission and speed up its modernizing mission. He s already outspoken in his denigration of the
narrow views and ways of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This path was here before you were born and before your whole family was born. The whole life of
the village depends on it. Our dead tribes depart by it and our ancestors visit us by it. Obi rejected the
priests words and in mocking replied to him Dead men don t walk. (Achebe, Page 46) he dismissed
his ancestry and instead chose the European way. The path remained blocked and a few days later a
village woman died in childbirth. The villagers took it as a sign that if the path remains closed they
would suffer a great hardship. Believing that the mother would be unable to rest in peace and the child
is unable to walk the path, the villagers became agitated and brought down the school building and
everything used to block the path and the flowers planted to show modernize culture. When the
inspector finally arrived, he was shocked to see grounds that were completely destroyed along with a

Karl Marx Totalitarianism
I interpret this as meaning that people who wish to leave a nation or overthrow the Communist state
will have their property confiscated. I see how this could help a Communist state to thrive because it
would prevent a mass exodus from the state is people weren t sympathetic to the new government.
Also, it would help with the transition of private to public property. This principle does have cause for
concern though, in that it limits the rights of people who wish to leave, but (more importantly) it is a
means to silence critics of the government. It is understandable that to form a stable Communist state,
dissenters have to be dealt with, but for fear of losing property (or possibly other repercussions), it is
possible that rebels would ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But, if the state genuinely acts in the interest of all citizens, this is a positive means of de alienating
workers and redistributing wealth. In What is Socialization? A Program of Practical Socialism,
Korsch, Denton, and Kellner explain that The means of production are all those physical objects or
goods that are used for the purpose of product. In other versions of the Communist Manifesto, this
sixth measure demands the centralization of the means of communication and transport in the hands of
the state. Though the means of production are not limited to communication and transport, these are
important physical structures/systems which are necessary to the existence of any state. I will only
focus on these two at the moments because there are various components of the means of production
and it is important that I not make generalizations about each aspect of the means of

City Of Ember Themes
The City of Ember is an underground city that has problems with their society. Doon and Lisa are two
of many people in the city. They are both 12 years old and they want to help the city by being
electricians and Messengers. The cities lights are going out, so they want to help fix the power. But
they both have struggles that are in there way of succeeding in the goals. The themes in the City of
Ember is that when change happens, we have to adapt. And in hard times you have to find hope.
The first theme is that when change happens, we have to adapt. This is shown throughout the book in
so many ways. On pages 139 it says, Lina bent forward until her head rested against granny s
shoulder. Good night granny. This shows that Lina had to adapt to granny passing away even after
both her parents died from trying escape the City of Ember. Now Lina has to adapt to have no parents
and no grandparents. Another example is on page 5, and it says, Grown people did their work, and
younger people, until 12 were in School. After 12 years old, the students are assigned a job to work for
the city. This shows that the students had to adapt to having a bigger responsibility. These pages in the
book show that when change happens, we have to adapt. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

United States V Julius Steinnberg And Julius Rosenberg And...
In early March of 1951, the case United States v Julius Rosenberg, Ethel Rosenberg, and Morton
Sobell argued whether the Rosenbergs planned execution should forgo or be rescinded for violating
the Espionage Act of 1917 and being guilty of starting the Korean War. In the late 1940 s and early
1950 s the Cold War was ongoing, with the United States and the Soviet Union entrenched in an
ongoing battle over the supremacy of the west. Paul Frazier, an author for the Magazine of History in
Bloomington states, One of the most intriguing aspects of the Cold War relationship between the
Americans and the Soviets was the development of vast networks of spies and counterspies (Frazier).
The United States and the Soviet s relationship establishes an early conflict between the two nations,
further affecting future diplomatic relations. Julius Rosenberg s sympathy towards the Soviets and
anger towards the United State s current position on the world s economic stage ultimately led to his
act of traitorous espionage. Michael Browning, a writer for the Palm Beach Post newspaper states,
What united the Rosenbergs was a belief in communism, strengthened by the Depression and Russia s
fight against Hitler during World War 2 , (Browning). The United States depression and Julius s
admiration for Russia s fight against Hitler motivated him to turn against his home nation during a
time of crisis. To conclude, Cold War tensions and Julius s appreciation for Soviet life and government

purpose is to provide to the working customer. Ann Taylor s expansion into value based divisions
(LOFT and its clearance centers) has captured the value market. The pricing at LOFT is about 30%
lower than its sister concept, Ann Taylor. The outlets too, have captured the market that comprises of
consumers seeking deeper value over traditional pricing and stores. The corporation added more value
to these clearance centers, by creating private labels for the outlet centers. All the three divisions have
proven to be a success among consumers. A third strength of the company would be its marketing
strategies through celebrity associations. Some of the biggest celebrities like Heidi Klum, Milla
Jovovich, Rachel Bilson are the faces of the company. The brand equity of the company, i.e. the image

Those artists who do not versatile in the different media s of art, their opportunities can be limited due to keen completion in both salary jobs and freelance work. This is mainly due to the number of qualified workers/artist exceeding the number of available openings in the career field. As I stated earlier, there are some requirement to becoming an art director, and fulfilling those requirements can be difficult. You have to at least find a job and keep it competitively to sustain an income. In a Houston Chronicle article online by Megan Torrance mentions painters like me have trouble finding work and commissions, ...the BLS reports that the number of charitable donations has been declining in recent years. In spite of this, interest in the occupation has remained steady and led to a larger pool of qualified candidate... the BLS projects the market will remain competitive from 2010 to 2020 (Chron.com). • 4. Invictus By William Ernest Henley Invictus is a poem written by William Ernest Henley. The theme of this poem is about having the will to survive in hardships. This poem tells us that you control your own fate. This poem is lyrical as it is expressing the writer s emotions about his hardships in life, but also didactic as it teaches you to forge your own path in life. This poem follows a ABAB rhyme pattern, and has four stanzas which includes four quatrains. The first stanza indicates the difficulty in life and thanks thegods for the strength they ve given him. The second stanza tells us of this soul who has never complained even when things are of misfortune, and would rather endure than to lose pride. • 5. Florence Kelley s Speech On Child Labor Rights On July 22, 1905, Florence Kelley, motivated by the plight of these young women and children, affected drastically by the lack of child labor laws, delivered a speech to the National American Women s Suffrage Association in Philadelphia. Kelley s strategies, including word choice and tone, persuade her audience to join forces to help free the American children from toil. Beginning her speech, Kelley applies her credibility by placing statistics regarding the controversy of child labor laws, revealing that she is informed about this topic. Her credibility has a great connection to her purpose, she claims that the number of working girls doubled from census to census and girls from twelve to twenty years are working when they should not have to. Kelley then manifests her concern over these working girls by explaining that, tonight, while everybody else is snoozing away in bed, these several thousand little girls will be working in textile mills, (16 17). These words make her audience feel pity concerning those young girls and are a great reason to act against the unfair laws and regulations that violate both their human and women s rights, especially when they aren t even getting paid fairly. By appealing to their emotion Florence Kelley wishes to push the women to act on her proposal of joining together and helping the poor young girls of their nation. Kelley continues to approach and influence the women s sentiments and hopefully their actions by including her scandalized argument that in Georgia there is no restriction whatever! A girl of six or seven years, just tall enough to reach the bobbins, may work eleven hours by day or by night, (29 31). She decides to include the bobbins of sewing machines in factories to illustrate how short and how young they are to be working in dangerous factories where their rights are ignored, girls at that age should worry more about going to school instead of sacrificing themselves to bring money for bread to their homes. One would understand that many families are living through poverty due to the economy being at a very depressing state and they need the most they can do to increase their financial position to survive in their society, then again, girls should be ... • 7. Essay about The Benefits of Online Universities It is a well known fact that sometimes teachers are not able to respond to challenging questions and students have to look for the answers themselves. When I, as a student experienced the same, I made the decision to learn such topics from internet sources to compliment what we have studied in class. The result was astonishing; even though I haven t fully studied in the classroom, I could pass my exams successfully. So, I came to the conclusion that online education may easily surpass the traditional, classroom study one. However, there are some people who believe it is impossible . The Intervention of the Judicial System in Violence Against Women Women in this country have been a part of violence for an enormous amount of time. This violence includes pornography, rape, and even domestic violence. The United States judicial system has intervened into the so called private sphere and eradicated women in society, providing precedent and even updating statutes as well as other types of legislation. Without intervention women may still have no rights as human beings and the victims of much worse violence. Not to say that the violence that comes about is not extremely painful and an obscene amount of torture for women, but without our judicial system to minimize some of these violent acts would be in total chausses. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The last act of violence discussed will be domestic violence. Why women stay in relationships where they are being battered and abused? All of these acts of violence are dangerous and put lives in danger. The judicial systems intervention may not stop all of these horrible incidents but may protect the lives of those who wish to be protected. Although there are exceptions to every rule, depending on the type of porn and in what manner it is presented or acted out determines how violent it is perceived. According to Andrea Dworkin, ?Words alone, words and pictures, moving or still, creates systematic harm to women in the form of discrimination and physical hurt.? Although this may be true there are some women who have actually chosen this profession for pleasure and enjoy this type of industry. As we know pornography is legal and is considered freedom of speech, written in the 1st Amendment of the Constitution. There are two levels of speech, speech and non speech. The courts recognize ?speech? as being protected and hold it to the highest level of scrutiny, but as for ?non speech? rational basis is implemented. Unprotected speech consists of ?fighting words.? Also obscenity is unprotected speech. The whole reason we protect speech is part of us and therefore recognized as knowledge. Pornography has been considered as speech unless children are ... Food can showcase a lot about a nation and its people because culture and food, creates unity in a nation. In the case of Israel the Zionist organization used food as a tool to create a sense of identity and nationalism for the people of Israel by encouraging consumption of Kosher and Israeli produced foods. Israel like the United States, is an immigrant nation; so naturally many different foods and recipes are brought with the new immigrants from the countries they came from Europe to Africa. While we can all agree that a reform of the health care system is sorely needed, we must also acknowledge that Obamacare is not the cure all we so desperately require. Rather, President Obama, like a medieval barber, prescribed a health care reform that treated the symptoms of our flawed system rather than the actual disease. The subsidization of health insurance providers has proven ineffective at providing affordable coverage for all. Certainly one is likely to hear the various incendiary talking points of both the proponents and opponents. Whether it s the republican candidates blaspheming Obamacare as socialism, or the administration praising the success of health care for all, it is difficult to actually find constructive dialogue. We are purview to many sound bites, but few actual solutions. We have witnessed heated debates, but rarely do we witness intelligent discourse. If beneficial reform is to be crafted and implemented, we must first acknowledge the issues and inconsistencies of the current system and begin to explore alternate methods of providing health care to the American people. This diagnoses of the flaws in our health care system must start with identifying and redefining the social constructs of America. He laid out his observations and believed that s exactly how it happened. Even though Collingwood s ideas were widely accepted, he wrote as if there no other possible conclusion. In his book Roman Britain and English Settlements, Collingwood said, The historicity of the man can hardly be called into question. The fact that his name in later ages was a magnet drawing to itself all manner of folklore and fable, and that an Arthurian cycle grew up composed partly of events transferred from other contexts, no more proves him a fictitious character than similar fables prove it of Alexander or Aristotle, Vergil or Roland. How The Pig Farming Industry Affects Our Environment The hog farming industry has always been one of controversy when it comes to its effects on the environment, and with the green house gas emissions a pig farm produces and the spread of disease through swine this is with good reason. Although the truth is that the industry has come a very long way in the past 50 years in regards to its sustainability. The pig farming industry as a whole has been able to reduce its overall environmental impact and natural resources use by 50% in the past 50 years according to a study done by Garth Boyd a well known researcher on environmental footprints (Boyd). Even with the improvements made by the pig farming industry there is still a need for change and major improvement in sustainable practices. First I will discuss how the pig farming industry effects our environment. Although it is true a pig farm needs water and land to operate, the use of those natural resources is not the major problem with pig farms. It is what goes in the air that is of concern. The pig manure and the decomposition of the manure over time release three major gases of concern, methane, ammonia, and hydrogen sulfide. There are other gaseous compounds that may be emitted from decomposing manure but these three are the principal gases in emissions. The level of emissions released by a farm will vary based on the amount of manure being managed as well as the type of manure management system the farm has in place. Where they not present at the time, they were marked as dead. Their family would be removed, the house would be cleaned out, perfumed, and then, a mere four hours later, people would move back in. Obviously, the fear of not being observed would be strong in this situation, a direct result of the drastic measures taken once someone s presence could not be observed. Though this fear has the opposite motivation of the healthy citizens, who, knowing they are being watched, are afraid to do wrong, it works on the same basic principle. That if one knows they are being watched, it remains a constant consideration in their mind, regardless of the presence of an observer, the fear will always be present. The Panopticon, a prison described by Foucault, is a machine for dissociating the see/being seen dyad: in the peripheric ring, one is totally seen, without ever seeing (321, Foucault). This literally means that in the formation of the panopticon those who are being seen can not see one another and the one who sees everything can never be seen. In this study we will utilize the operational span task (OSPAN) developed by Turner and Engle (1989) to split the participants into high and low working memory span groups dependent on their OSPAN scores. Participants will then engage in a simulated pain task under two conditions: distraction and no distraction. This study will include 40 participants; 20 in the low working memory span group and 20 in the high working memory span group. We expect that the low working memory span group will, on average, report higher pain ratings than the high working memory span group in the experimental (distraction) condition. We hope that this study will show that the inverse relationship between working memory and distractibility will have an effect on how people perceive pain. We hope that the current study will guide future research in exploring alternative non pharmacological methods to relieve pain. Keywords: working memory, OSPAN, pain perception, distractibility Effect of Working Memory Capacity and Distraction on Pain Perception There are times in our lives when we might experience pain that is inescapable ... • 24. Thomas Paine Influence Would the revolutionary war in the New World have developed without Thomas Paine? Political activist Thomas Paine created the first influential piece of writing, Common Sense, about retrieving American independence over Great Britain. Common Sense was a famous 50 page pamphlet discussing the possibility of creating a democratic republican party, and advocating independence from Great Britain. Thomas Paine had ideas of independence before he wrote Common Sense, but the American Public and his comrades motivated him even more about the prospect of independence, and influenced him to write the pamphlet. He had already written papers about the injustices and cruelties the Americans had to face while being overruled by Britain. Thomas Paine was the only American who had the audacity to write about gaining independence from Britain. He was the one who believed in America and its citizens to become a world superpower, and to grow into making their beloved country special. Written in his essay Age of Reason, he said, I saw, or at least I thought I saw, a vast scene opening itself to the world in the affairs of America; and it appeared to me, that unless the Americans changed the plan they were then pursuing, with respect to the government of England, and declared themselves independent, they would not only involve themselves in a multiplicity of new difficulties, but shut out the prospect that was then offering itself to mankind through their means, (44). In this passage of The Age of Reason, he stated his motive to write Common Sense. His motive to write Common Sense was for his patriots and the country as a whole. Not to make his political status rise, but to help America progress as an independent country. It wasn t about him and his career as an author, but about having colonial unity amongst it s citizens, and fight together to make America advance. Not only was their motive from the American public, but also from his fellow comrades, like Ben Franklin. They would frequently discuss upon this matter of independence and other international news, and this would have a significant influence into the writing of his persuasive essay. He spent hours daily discussing with his fellow moderns. It is obvious that Paine incorporated the conversations and correspondence with his compatriots into his essay. The long discussions that he had with Ben Franklin and his other friends gave him good ideas and a good understanding of their current situation. These long discussions were ... In the article Should Children be allowed to Play Violent Video Games the author states that although there are many different pros and cons and there is no right answer to the central question. The author states that the decision of children playing violent games be left up to them. In the article the author asserts that one argument to allow children to play video games that showcase violence is that it can act as a stress reliever and help control their emotions. This argument is a valid one by those who believe this but for those who have a counter argument say that this is not true. The counter argument to video games being helpful is that they are harmful. There is no inbetween or balance between these two sides the author suggests that the two opposing sides will never come to an agreement. The negative side says that video games make children more violent and less capable to deal with real world problems. The argument of Children being allowed to play violent video games is ultimately a decision that a parent would need to make with a compromise between the child and the parent. In the discussions of children playing violent video games, one controversial issue has been weather it beneficial or not. • 26. America Must Invest in Energy Efficiency Essays America Must Invest in Energy Efficiency In recent years our country has had many debates over what must be done to lessen the amount of oil that our country consumes. It is well known that we need to make some type of change to help not only the environment, but also lessen our reliance on imported oil. President Bush recently announced his new plan that could someday greatly reduce that amount of oil that Americans use by replacing oil with hydrogen fuel cells. Although this plan is a step in the right direction, it is not the answer. There are far too many downsides that could actually hurt our country in the long run. One problem is that the plan proposed by Bush will take far too long before any changes will be seen. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... . If cars were required to run on 55 miles per gallon, the U.S. would save about five million barrels per day. This alone is about seven times the amount of oil that was imported from Iraq alone last year (Kennedy 11). All major auto companies can already make cars that run on seventy miles per gallon; meaning that Clinton s goal was nearly reached. However, because funding is being cut by the new plan, these cars will most likely never be available in the large market. We do need to someday totally end our reliance on oil, especially in cars, but why stop funding a plan that would have an immediate effect? Money is simply being wasted due to the fact that millions of dollars were spent on a plan that is being ended because funding is suddenly being spent on new areas of research. We need to continue funding Clinton s plan even if we do start more research in hydrogen fuel cells. A second major problem with the plan is not easy to see at first. You must look much closer at what types of research is being done. There are two ways that hydrogen fuel cells can be made. One is by a reaction with oxygen. These cells are about 70% efficient and the only emissions are water vapor. The second way it by using oil or coal to make the cells. These cells are about 33% efficient and release harmful emissions into the atmosphere (Abelson 1469). An organisation will probably utilise a combination of both systems, choosing the most suitable arrangement for the data that is to be stored. Regardless of the type of system adopted, it should be effective and efficient, accessible, accurate, reliable and user friendly. In a school setting, both electronic and manual filing systems are used on a daily basis. To give an example; A manual filing system is used to store individual pupil s confidential information. Each pupil has their own file; this is filed alphabetically and held in a filing cabinet in the school office. The child s file contains confidential information such as date of birth, address, family history and medical details. This filing cabinet is kept locked at all times to ensure that children s information is protected and respected and only available for viewing by authorised staff. An electronic filing system is used to record the school s financial transactions. This is a very thorough and rigorous method for storing such important details. The system generates orders; payments and reports that enable the head teacher and school business manager to monitor spend and control budgets. This system is only accessible to the school business manager and access is protected by a password. The Iron Mill By Rebecca Harding Davis In Life in the Iron Mills, Rebecca Harding Davis tells the story of Hugh Wolfe, a lower class man whose love of beauty and desire to move up in the world ultimately leads to his mental decline and demise. Wolfe lives in a town of smothering grey smog and works in an iron mill reminiscent of Hell, places that induce hopelessness and despair by appearance. In contrast to his surroundings, Wolfe possesses a fierce love of beauty and a talent of sculpting with korl, both of which are frequently associated with higher socioeconomic classes. Initially, it appears that Davis means to reinforce the common associations of beauty with the upper class and unseemliness with the lower class. In the story, beauty can be associated with the upper class characters through their polished appearances and admiration of art, inciting a positive association in response to beautiful imagery; unseemliness, on the other hand, can be associated with the lower class and negative feelings because the mill is reminiscent of hell and the characters are generally unattractive. However, when looked at with a closer lens, it appears the story cannot be taken at face value and the typical feelings surrounding beauty and ugliness do not apply in the story. Appearances can be deceiving: within Life in the Iron Mills, ugliness represents opportunity whereas the beauty serves as a distraction. • 43. Capitalism And Consumerism Some would say that the advertisers are responsible for building the hype and the consumer is just responding to a once in a lifetime deal (that happens every year). Some have even gone as far as blaming capitalism and the manner in which it functions within our society. If you recall though, James Twitchell blames the consumer and not these other outlets. Some might blame this on capitalism, but one can love the freedom and innovation of capitalism and hate the materialism of consumerism... However this isn t because capitalism promotes consumerism. Capitalism is just an economic system an imperfect one that that reflects the values we put into it, so if we feed it consumerism, that s what we ll get. We, the consumers, are guilty of turning Thanksgiving into a consumerist holiday (Daniel). This isn t to say that everyone that participates in Black Thursday or Friday is guilty of consumerism, maybe they don t have a family to spend the holiday with or maybe shopping with family is there means of spending quality time together. The important thing is that we are all consumers in this society and we must be aware of the production companies ability to trigger that within our brains the need to buy more and more things we don t necessarily need and sometimes even want. Playing the victim in all of this proves that you are aware of the tactics used to get you to use your purchasing power and inturn you are aware of your own ability to change the way consumerism is currently ... Covey When I went through professor s required book list, I recognized the book, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, at my first glance. I do remember that I read its Chinese version which was a present from my grandfather almost ten years ago when I was a teenager. Shortly after feeling excited, I was a little embarrassed because I barely remember the 7 habits. Now as an adult almost a decade later, after finished the book, the original work, I was impressed. The immaturity made me believe that most of the points of Covey were too obvious and trite to make sense. But now those things Covey talked about are actually tough challenges in my life. The precondition of the Covey s theory is that a lot of people fix the problems in a scattershot approach which will eventually lead to chaos or disappointment for the most time. The author s answer to this is to be an effective person. People needs to learn to solve problems from personal life, study and work with an approach based on a same core values. The book is about how to develop the core values basically through the seven habits in order to be a more effective person. The seven habits also help to achieve greater insights into leadership and management in people s personal and professional life in the effective way. The seven habits are: 1. Be proactive 2. Begin with the end in mind 3. Put first things first 4. Think win win 5. First understand, then be understood 6. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 49. Karl Marx Totalitarianism I interpret this as meaning that people who wish to leave a nation or overthrow the Communist state will have their property confiscated. I see how this could help a Communist state to thrive because it would prevent a mass exodus from the state is people weren t sympathetic to the new government. Also, it would help with the transition of private to public property. This principle does have cause for concern though, in that it limits the rights of people who wish to leave, but (more importantly) it is a means to silence critics of the government. It is understandable that to form a stable Communist state, dissenters have to be dealt with, but for fear of losing property (or possibly other repercussions), it is possible that rebels would ... In the late 1940 s and early 1950 s the Cold War was ongoing, with the United States and the Soviet Union entrenched in an ongoing battle over the supremacy of the west.
