INTRODUCTION
What Is Social Networking??
Social networking is the practice of expanding the number
of one's business and/or social contacts by making
connections through individuals, often through social
media sites such
as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Google+.
While social networking has gone on almost as long as
societies themselves have existed, the unparalleled
potential of the Web to facilitate such connections has led
to an exponential and ongoing expansion of that
phenomenon.
What Is Social Media?
Rather than defining the term using a bunch of boring jargons,
that would probably only complicate things further, perhaps
the best way to get a clearer understanding of it is to break it
down into simpler terms. To start, let's look at each word
individually.
• The "social" part: refers to interacting with other people
by sharing information with them and receiving
information from them.
• The "media" part: refers to an instrument of
communication, like the internet (while TV, radio, and
newspapers are examples of more traditional forms of
media).
Okay, so from these two separate terms, we can pull a
basic definition together: Social media are web-based
communication tools that enable people to interact with each
other by both sharing and consuming information.
Benefits Of Social Media
Some common benefits of social media for the
society are as follows:
• People from anywhere can connect with anyone
• Social media has a lot of benefits for the
students and teachers
• The main advantage of the social media is that
you update yourself from the latest happenings
around in the world.
• Social media also create awareness and innovate
the way people live.
Social Media As An Online News Channel
Very recently, a new trend has been on the go with
social media, apart from using it merely to
connect.
It has now been used more prominently as a tool
to get the latest updates, ranging from around
you to the almost any new incident around the
world.
And it has even been proved that the trend to get
news via social media has seen a major ascend in
the past couple of years.
Evidence By Pew Research Center
From the graph shown above, it is very
evident that the use of social media platforms
to get news has increased manifolds in the
recent times.
And among these most prominent platforms,
Facebook and Twitter stand to be the
undisputed leader.
Another very helpful piece of information is
offered by prestigious Forbes website, which says
that “nearly two-thirds of American adults –
62%– get news from a social media sites”
Some 66% of users of Facebook, the biggest of
the sites with 67% of American adults, get news
from the site, but the report notes that a majority
of those people say they get the news while they
are on the platform doing something else.
Getting News From Social Media In India
Before we learn the trend of social media in India, let us
look at some quick facts:
• Facebook is the most browsed social network on social
media with a large base of 100 Million users, clearly it is
not fading away anytime soon in India. More than 80% of
those users access Facebook via their mobile phone.
• Total Twitter users in India are 33 Million and from this
base 76% of users access it via their mobile phone.
• LinkedIn has 26 Million India users, of the total 300+
Million users.
With such a whopping number of users of these
three major social media platforms, it should be
absolutely evident that getting news requires
no extra effort, as a single post from a certain
person would be accessible around the world in
just a few seconds.
Advantages Of Getting News Via Social
Media
• The main advantage of the social media is that you update
yourself from the latest happenings around in the world. Most
of the time, Television and print media these days are biased
and does not convey the true message. With the help of social
media you can get the facts and true information by doing
some research.
• Social media also create awareness and innovate the way
people live. It is the social media which has helped people
discover new and innovative stuffs that can enhance personal
lives. From farmers to teachers, students to lawyers every
individual of the society can benefit from the social media and
its awareness factor.
Disadvantages Of Getting News Via Social
Media
The addictive part of the social media is very bad and can
disturb personal lives as well. The teenagers are the most
affected by the addiction of the social media. They get involved
very extensively and are eventually cut off from the society. It
can also waste individual time that could have been utilized by
productive tasks and activities.
Not all the news you get these days on social media is true. In
fact, about 50% of the news has been found to be fraudulent or
misleading, which could lead to many grave consequences. This
has been found to be one of the major disadvantages of getting
news from the social media platforms.
CONCLUSION
• From all the above points it could be
effectively concluded that social media has
now turned to be a necessary element in the
life of a person.
• For getting news too, it holds a wondrous
reputation, not only in India or USA, but
almost all around the world.
• But a bit of concern is always mandatory to
differentiate the legitimate news from the
fraudulent one, as the number of nuisance-
creators too tends to see an ascend in the
future years.
Thank You
