What is Social Media? • Source of powerful and instant information. • All about psychology and sociology more than means of technology. • Computer based technologies that facilitate the creation and sharing of information, idea, career interest and other forms of expression via virtual communities and network.
History of Social Media: Then and Now o Before 1900 :- – In 1844, the telegraph was invented. This allowed messages to be delivered to longer distances faster. – In 1876, telephone was discovered. – In 1891, radio was discovered. – Telephone lines and radio signals enabled people to communicate over great distances instantaneously.
o In the 20th century :- - In the 1940s, the first super computers were created. - In the 1960s, the earliest form of internet,that is CompuServe was developed. - In 1977, the first recognizable social media site Six Degrees was created. - In 1979, UseNet allowed users to communicate through virtual newsletter. - In 1988, internet relay chats were used.
o Social Media today :- – In the early 2000s, sites like MySpace and LinkedIn gained prominence. – In 2005, Youtube came out, creating an entirely new way for people to communicate and share with each other across great distances. – In 2006, Facebook and Twitter both became available to users throughout the world.

Uses of Social Media 1. Connectivity - people connect with anyone regardless of location or religion. 2. Education - very easy to get educated from others without any fees. 3. Help - anyone can share their issues on social media to receive help and guidelines. 4. Information and Updates - one can stay updated about all the recent happenings all across the world.
5. Promotion - people can promote their business to a large audience. Helps in reducing the expenses caused due to advertising , thus, increases profit. 6. Noble Cause - used for promotion of various NGOs, social welfare activities, also to get donations for the needy people. 7. Awareness – every individual of the society can gain awareness from social media.
8. Help Government Agencies fight crime - helps government and security agencies to spy and catch criminals to fight crime. 9. Improves Business Reputation - positive reviews and sharing about a company can help them with sales and goodwill. 10.Helps in building communities - helps in building and participating in the community of own religion and beliefs to learn and discuss about it.
Disadvantages of Social Media 1. Cyber bullying - anyone can create a fake account and do anything without being traced. 2. Hacking - social media accounts can easily be hacked by professionals which can result in financial and personal losses. 3. Fraud and Scams -social media platforms to execute their insidious scams to steal people's money and identities.

Statistics • In India, over 462 million internet users and 200 million active on social media. • India has world’s largest number of Facebook users (over 195 million). • 155 million Monthly Active Users(MAUs) in India, of which 147 million access Facebook via mobiles. • In India, 76% Facebook users are men and 24% are women, which illustrates barriers faced by women to gain access to technology.
• Twitter, the micro blogging site has 23.2 million MAUs in India(2nd largest in Asia-Pacific after Japan). • Youtube, the video sharing site has more than 60 million users in India. • Over 70% of Youtube viewers in India are aged below 35, female users account for 38% and male users 62% of Youtube users. • There are 16 million Instagram users in India which constitute 30% of overall Internet users.
