Introduction
Background of the Study
Single-use plastic is a huge contributor to pollution. Plastic bags, straw, coffee
stirrers, water bottles, and sachets are only a portion of the instances
of the items used by Filipinos, just once and afterward discarded or
thrown away. Barry E. DiGregorio (n.d) wrote in an article that
“disposed plastic materials can remain in the environment for up to
2,000 years and longer.” There is an incredible need to address plastic
contamination for our condition and for the people in the future. As
indicated by reports, the Philippines is the world’s third-biggest
wellspring of plastic contamination. 1Plastics drain poisonous materials
into the groundwater, streaming downstream into lakes and waterways.
Sea contamination emerging from plastic flotsam and jetsam is stifling
our conduits and declining nature issues. In day to day basis, most
plastics, or generously related items are easy to utilize, and plastic bags
are particularly normal, and in the household, school, and literature, it
is fairly easy to get data with respect to the negative effect of plastic in
the environment. To make a superior domain for all, it is imperative to
understand the negative effects of plastic, constraining the utilization of
plastic items in regular daily existence. Introducing the perspectives and
activities of the University of Makati with respect to the single-utilization
of Plastic is a significant concentration if this paper.
Review of Related Literature
The restriction on single-utilize plastic items by Representative Winston
Castelo documented in 2018, this bill tries to boycott single-use plastics
and to urge makers and purchasers to utilize increasingly manageable
and ecologically well-disposed items. This demonstration applies to all
producers, importation deals, and exchange and business trade that
utilization single-plastics in the nation. It covers an eliminate plan which
forbids nourishment foundations, retail locations, markets, grocery
stores, and food supplies from utilizing single-utilize plastic. It
additionally investigates the foundation of reusing focuses on nearby
government units (LGUs). Punishments under this bill incorporate a fine
going from P50, 000 to P200, 000. Violators might be ineligible to apply
for licenses to operate. (CNN Philippines Staff, 2020)
Makati also implements a plastic ban, more than 17,500 retail and
food establishments in Makati are prohibited from utilizing plastics,
Styrofoam and other non-biodegradable bundling beginning June 20.
There was a nine-year grace period for compliance of a provision in the
Solid Waste Management Code of Makati, which was sanctioned in 2003.
The grace period finished last December 31, however, was broadened
by means of Executive Order No. 007-2012 to give foundations more
opportunity to drain plastic inventories. (ABS-CBN Corporation, 2013)
Theoretical Framework
The present study is based on the Theory of Change that is essentially a
comprehensive description and illustration of how and why the desired
change is expected to happen in a particular context. It does this by first
recognizing the ideal objectives and afterward works once more from
these to distinguish all the conditions (results) that must be set up (and
how these identified with each other causally) for the objectives to
happen. These are totally mapped out in an Outcomes Framework. This
prompts better planning, in that activities are connected to a detailed
comprehension of how change really occurs. It likewise stimulates better
assessment. (The Center for Theory of Change, Inc. 2019)

This study will be conducted at the University of Makati. The respondents will
answer the Filter or Contingency Survey (Yes/No) through Random
Sampling from both Senior High School Students and College Students
as well as the personnel of the University of Makati. The study will be
conducted in the second semester of the academic year 2019-2020.
Research Instruments
The authors will utilize one research instrument in the study. The researcher
will use Filter or Contingency Survey that typically formatted as ask
“yes/no” meant to help respondents to avoid answering questions that
do not pertain to them. Respondents who answer “yes” to filter
questions are asked more detailed follow-up questions, whereas those
who answer “no” are not question further on the topic. It is used for
clear distinction of qualities, experiences or respondents opinions. In the
readiness of the instrument, the necessities in the structuring of good
information assortment instrument were thought of. For instance,
statement describing the situations or issues pertaining was turned
down to accommodate the knowledge preparedness of the respondents.
Follow- up questions were provided to further know the opinions of the
respondents. Thus, the instrument is approved to get substantial
responses of the respondents. Preference for the use of the structured
questionnaire is premised on several research assumptions such as a.)
Cost of being at least expensive means of gathering data b.) Avoidance
of personal bias c.) Less pressure for immediate response, and giving
the respondents a greater opinions or ides. At last it urged open results
to sensitive issues. In validation the instrument was validated by
professor before it laid on to the study.
Research Procedure

Discussion
The research background in conjunction with the data collected indicated
these findings after is a one-time survey administered to university
students:
The assessment of the respondent’s awareness is based on the
assumption that the students already heard about the campaign through
UMak TV, Lunchbox parade and posters. 62% were aware with the “no
to single use of plastic” campaign in the university. Therefore, the
researchers may assume that most participants had given this topic
some consideration prior to participation in the research. However 38%
of participants were not aware with the “no to single use of plastic”
campaign in the university, therefore that 38% may or may not pay
attention to University announcement/news.
Does the UMak Community aware to the negative consequences
of the single-use of plastics? Plastic pollution are the most response
issue according to the result of this study. According to Parker (2019)
Plastic pollution is generally noticeable in developing Asian countries
and African countries, where trash assortment frameworks are
frequently wasteful or nonexistent.
Thus, it is important to clarify if the students would have a feeling
of violation of personal choice if plastic or disposable products were used
although it is prohibited from school. The response of the students were
almost divided, 52% would feel a violation if they continue to use plastic
product since they are aware that single use of plastic is prohibited to
the university. However the result seems to be inconsistent with the
follow-up question, majority of the students would have a feeling of
irresponsibility if the ‘no to single-use of plastic campaign’ were violated.
Consequently, most of the students are not familiarwith the punishment
of the campaign if not follow.
Interestingly, most of the students are supporter of the
university’s campaign by using tumbler instead of plastic bottle, using
of eco- bag or paper bag so that in this ways they can help the enviand
also serve as support to the campaign of the university.
With regards to the perception of the university personnel to the
effects of the campaign are also quite divided, but most of the response
were positive, 65% of the personnel believed that there are progress
due to the decrease of plastic garbage since the campaign was started
because one personnel specified that before they carry 3 bags of plastic
waste each, but now they only carry 1 bag. The personnels think that
the students adhere to the campaign, by bringing their own container,
paper bag and by bringing stainless spoon and fork, but some are not
consistent with their actions.
The personnels agree that the campaign will help to minimize the
solid waste materials if the campaign will be implemented seriously,
they think the the said campaign would be a good contribution to the
University because they think it could lessen the disposable materials,
decrease the plastic pollution and especially it would discipline the
students and also the staffs of the school.
In general, all the outcomes collected in this study are controlled
to the moderately short number of samples (70) taking into account
that these expect to speak to the perspectives on the entire University
of Makati community . In this sense, financial and time assets to utilize
a questionaire that would access to a bigger groups for this research
that ought to be considered for further study in the future.
Conclusion
The result of this research project provide insight into attitudes and
actions of students at the University of Makati regarding the no to single-
use of plastic campaign. Student’s attitudes toward the campaign is not
consistent with actions or how they use single-use of plastic. However,
most of the students are supporters of the university’s campaign by
using tumbler instead of plastic bottle, using of eco- bag or paper bag
so that in this ways they can help or serve as support to the campaign
of the university.
Recommendations
No to single use of plastic campaign of the university is a effective way to
prevent the increasing number of plastic which is usually reason in
environmental problem. Therefore, the campaign has a high
effectiveness to the students and to the personnel. With this, the
researcher recommend to the school officials to distribute things that
can be use to minimize the use of plastic in the schools, such as: lunch
box, tumbler, and stainless spoon and fork. Also, since the gathered data
is not 100% effective. the personnel must participate and adhere to the
campaign since they’re the one who proposed this. Another
recommendation, the university must have a firm plicy rule in ording
these campaign. Lastly, university must have seminars about the rules
and policy with regards to the no to single use of plastic campaign.
