In his essay "The Normative Structure of Science," originally published in 1949 and later
anthologized in The Sociology of Science in 1973, the sociologist Robert Merton claimed that
science was inherently a social act. He did so by contending that scientists were dependent on a
social structure and as such were bound by what he termed the "ethos of science" (Merton, 1973, p.
268). These ethos represent the internalized values and norms that form the scientific conscience.
Included in these ethos were those of communism, organized skepticism, universalism, and
disinterestedness. Under the ethos of communism all findings of science are "a product of social
collaboration and are assigned to the community" (p. 273) with "the scientist's claim to his

Dividing the organization into divisions based on the geographic region makes it possible for each
region to purchase their ingredients locally and organically. This divisional structure also allows the
company to evaluate and compare the regions.
This divisional structure is very different from that of others. A functional structure is organized into
departments according to the business functions. In this structure each department has its own
expectations and responsibilities, they are not like that of any other department, so the tasks in each

The structure of an organization, along with its policies and procedures, has a direct impact on how
an organization operates and how well it will perform. The structure of an organization describes
how a company is organized. This may include roles, responsibilities, authority chains and
relationships. Facilities Management is headed by Vice President Kevin Freeman under the
immediate direction of Assistant Vice President Mark Rodolf. The management team of Facilities
Management includes the Assistant Vice President, the Physical Plant Director and Assistant
Director, an Assistant Director of Facilities Operations, and the Director of Architectural and
Engineering Services. The management group is solely responsible for deriving, articulating,
communicating and implementing the vision and direction of Facilities Management. Three
separate divisions comprise Facilities Management: Architectural and Engineering Services, the

There may also be sections where the secondary structure is neither helix nor sheet. Then the
structure is called a random structure, indicating that it folds in random directions. The amino acids
in an alpha helix are arranged in a right–handed helical structure resembling a spring. The alpha helix
is the most common form of regular secondary structure in proteins. The beta–sheet is the second
form of regular secondary structure in proteins consisting of beta strands connected laterally by three
or more hydrogen bonds, forming a generally twisted, pleated sheet. The beta–sheet is sometimes
called the beta pleated sheet since sequential neighboring atoms are alternately above and below the

normally upward sloping reflecting a positive relationship between terms to maturity and yield to
maturity, or they can be downward sloping (inverted), or flat. Yield curves may however also depict
complicated shapes.
An upward sloping yield shows that long term interest rates are higher than short term interest rates.
This is due to long term bonds having to compensate for the interest rate risk and inflation
expectations that is associated with the longer term. Normal yield curves are usually linked with
economic growth. Flat yield curves indicate that the market does not expect future short term rates to
increase significantly enough to push long term yields up. Flat curves are associated with an
economy nearing recession. With an inverted yield curve, future short–term rates are expected to be
low enough that the long term bond rates lie below short current short term rates making them very
risky to invest in. An inverted yield curve is synonymous with economic recessions.
Yield curves on their own do not provide useful information. Theories are needed to make sense of
them and there are four such theories that have evolved. These are: the expectation theory, the
segmented market theory, the preferred habitat theory and the liquidity premium theory. The last two
theories however are closely related.
