Strengths The south had great military leadership. The whites in the south supported the war The war was mostly fought in the south; it was a defensive war for the Confederacy Weaknesses Smaller populations Fewer factories and food to support their army. Not a lot of railroad to move their troops and supplies. Insufficient economy

The Confederacy use Rose Greenhow’s spy skills to spy on the Union’s plans. They found out that they were attacking Richmond, Virginia, and the Confederacy met the Union there. The battle was at a small creek called Bull Run. Stonewall Jackson, one of the south’s military leaders, told his men to scream and charge the Union. The Union troops were scared and fled back to Washington D.C.

Strengths The North had a larger population (22 million) to support the war. They had more industries and more abundant resources. The union also had a better banking system More ships and Navy members More railroads (21,000 miles), but the thought the South would win. President Lincoln was an advantage. Weaknesses The North lacked military leadership This was because many of the great leaders were retired and moved to their homes in the south, even if they were against slavery.

They wanted to surround the south by sea and land to cut off is trade. The Union wanted to divide the Confederacy into sections so that one rebel region could help another. They had a plan to capture Richmond, Virginia, the capital of the Confederacy and destroy the rebel government. They called this the Anaconda Plan because it represented the crushing grip of an anaconda snake.
