“How do you stay so calm? It’s like you’re a ROBOT!”
That’s what the Program Manager said to me after we came out of a particularly heated meeting.
Early on in my Agile career, I used to do battle with the best of them, but you can only fight so long before you burn out.
So instead, I changed myself.
The stoics believed that one of the things we can control is how we respond to situations.
In this session, we will examine coaching and change from the perspective of the stoics. We’ll learn to apply those ideas and techniques to the problems you are currently facing in changing your organization.

More has been written about the topic of resilience in the past 3 years than the previous thirty, and yet there remains a surprising number of misconceptions. As a result, many are reluctant to view the concept as anything other than yet another "self-help" buzzword. In fact, emotional resilience is much, much more.
Researchers now recognize that the highly resilient tend to be healthier and live longer, are more successful in school and work, are less prone to depression and happier in relationships. To better understand the benefits of emotional resilience, this presentation will expose the truth behind the most common misconceptions.

Human beings are always faced with challenges and adversities in life.
None of our life moves forward smoothly without problems, just like that children also tend to have issues relating to the loss of someone or bullying at home and things like that.
Resilience can be said as the capability of an individual to overcome all these adversities with their available resources, strength and skills acquired in life.
This doesn’t mean that they can’t feel or experience the issues, they can and they find ways to tackle them.
Martha Stark MD – 2015 The Transformative Power of Optimal Stress.pdfMartha Stark MD
Freud’s interest was in the internal conflict that exists between, on the one hand, untamed id drives (most notably sexual and aggressive ones) clamoring for gratification and release and, on the other hand, the defenses mobilized by an undeveloped ego made anxious by the threatened breakthrough of those drives – conflict that will create neurotic suffering and interfere with the capacity to derive pleasure and fulfillment from love, work, and play (Freud 1926).
Using as a springboard Freud’s premises of drive-defense conflict as the source of a person’s difficulties in life and of the goal of treatment as therefore transformation of id energy into ego structure so that primitive defenses can be relinquished and conflict resolved – “Where id was, there shall ego be” (Freud 1923), I will go on to broaden Freud’s conceptualization of neurotic conflict to encompass, more generally, growth-impeding tension between anxiety-provoking but ultimately health-promoting internal forces pressing yes and anxiety- assuaging internal counterforces defending no.
The aim of treatment will then become (1) to tame the id so that its now more manageable energy can be redirected into more constructive channels and used to power the pursuit of healthier endeavors and (2) to strengthen the ego so that it will become both better able to cope with the multitude of anxiety-provoking stressors (internal and external) to which it is being continuously exposed and more skilled at harnessing id energy to fuel actualization of potential. In essence, a tamer id and a stronger ego will enable the patient to cope with the stress of life (Selye 1978) by adapting instead of defending – “Where defense was, there shall adaptation be.”
In the treatment situation, the therapist will offer psychotherapeutic interventions specifically designed to precipitate disruption in order to trigger repair (Stark 2008, 2012, 2014). To be effective against dysfunctional defenses that have become firmly entrenched over time, despite having long since outlived their usefulness, these therapeutic interventions must be optimally stressful. In other words, they must be strategically formulated to offer just the right combination of challenge and support.
Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make healthy choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.

Trauma & Recovery
What is trauma?
What are some of the ways that you or people you know have experienced trauma?
What is (1) hyperarousal, (2) intrusion and (3) constriction.
What surprised you from the readings?
The systems that give people a sense of control, connection and meaning are overwhelmed.
The incident includes threats to life or bodily integrity, a close personal encounter with violence, or witnessing grotesque death.
The event engenders a feeling of intense fear, helplessness, loss of control, and threat of annihilation.
Trauma often occurs when…
So the healing process must address the reestablishment of control, connection and meaning!

Trauma & Recovery
When the force is of nature, we speak of disasters or catastrophes.
When the force is that of other human beings, we speak of atrocities or terrorism.
What is “overwhelming” about the experience of trauma?

Potentially Traumatic Experiences
Trauma undermines the belief systems that give meaning to human experience.
Traumatized persons can lose trust in themselves, in other people, and in God.
The Traumatized Self
Traumatic Stress
PTSD references a “disorder” characterized by symptoms that imply a high level of daily dysfunction which emerges in the wake of a traumatic experience.
Countless untreated people have sub-clinical traumas that do not impinge severely upon their activities of daily living.
The ordinary response to danger entails a complex system of reactions.
Threat arouses the nervous system, causing the endangered person to go into a state of alert.
Concentration on the immediate threat, allows a person to disregard fatigue or pain.
Changes in arousal, attention, perception, and emotion mobilize the person for either “fightor flight.”
An Ordinary Response
If there is neither time nor strength for fight or flight and death appears imminent, the body will freeze.
The victim of trauma enters an altered state – time slows down, there is no fear or pain.
Fight, Flight or Freeze
Many trauma survivors feel guilt and shame for freezing and not doing more to protect themselves by fighting back or running away.
Understanding that freezing is an automatic response can facilitate the healing process.
Fight, Flight or Freeze
Trauma occurs when the human system for self-defense becomes overwhelmed and/or meaning-making structures become undermined.
Components of our “survival” system tend to persist in an exaggerated state long after the actual danger is over.
Traumatic events can thus produce lasting ...
‘Bouncing back’ suggests a rapid and effortless return from adversity.
Does your life return to exactly the same state it was before the adversity? As new meaning has emerged from overcoming the adversity (the transformational component), some previous beliefs and behaviours will probably become obsolete, so it is very unlikely that your life would return unchanged to this pre-adversity state. And for this new meaning to emerge, considerable time may be needed to process emotionally charged material resulting from the adversity.

2. First of all, what is resilience?
Psychological resilience is the ability to
mentally or emotionally cope with a crisis or to
return to pre-crisis status quickly. (Wikipedia)
It is the inner capacity we all have to go
through a crisis and to learn, to progress and
to move on.
3. When changes turn into crisis
A crisis can be defined
as a stage of a change
process. Its function is
to shake and to destroy
the present structure, so
that transform can take
place.
4. The pain of change
Loss.
Defeat.
Failure.
Tiredness.
No energy.
Boredom.
Neuroscience: people
who are more resilient,
they have more emotional
balance when they face
stressful situations.
5. Resilience to handle a crisis
Resilience comes from
within and it is based on
your inner strength.
Resistance is a reaction
against situations, but
there is a law…
Rebellion comes as a way
to fight the situation,
without really fighting it…
Resignation comes when
you stop taking from your
inner strength…
6. Resilience is an easy
way…
By using your own
resilience, you will
face a crisis and
even small adverse
situations without
much effort.
How? The plant does not struggle to find
the light; it uses its own force to do
it…
7. Ways to increase it
1. Understanding.
2. Experience &
experimentation.
3. Self-checking.
4. Cooperation.
8. Mind
Intellect

Environment
Stuff happens... and we
react or act
But crisis are out of the
pattern and so reaction is
forced and stress comes
We look at our
present and past
experiences...
…and we feel
lost, as a crisis
emerges a storm
We generate thoughts,
ideas and emotions as a
response to what
happens
In the case of a crisis,
the mind tends to lose
focus
We carry out an action in
response to what
happened
Its results will
sometimes deepen the
sense of crisis within
