Imagery and Experience
Compassionate Imagery
 Not so much about creating mental pictures,
more about create new felt experiences
 Can help us to practice being able to shift into
safeness and balance while under threat
Let’s try it..a taste of imagery:
 Sit in a comfortable position, eyes closed or
gaze resting
 Soothing rhythm breathing for 30 seconds
 Just imagine the situation I am describing ( pg
142 CFT ME)
Practice..
 Were you able to get a mental sense of the
things I mentioned?
 What emotions came up?
 The emotional brain responds to imagery by
producing different emotions
 Imagery is the language of the emotional
brain

 Let’s create a feeling of safeness, calm and
peacefulness pg146
Perfect nurturer:
 Imagine a perfect, nurturing, supportive being
 This being absolutely cares for you, accepts
you, deeply understands you and wants the
best for you
 Could be an animal, a person, a deity, the
earth, an ancient tree etc
What qualities would your perfect
nurturer have?
 Get out a sheet of paper and write down 5-6
qualities this being would have
 Human or non human?
 gender?
 What does it look like? Facial expression?
 Age?
 How would they act toward you?
