Welcome everyone. I’m Andrea and it is lovely to meet you all. This is our first training call, in a series of webinars. These trainings will explore key topics that will prepare you for your time at the Commission on the Status of Women, or CSW as it is commonly referred to as.
First I want to give you an overview of the webinar and what you can see. On the screen you should be able to see the Stop the Violence Powerpoint presentation There should be a Panel to the right side. On the panel there should be a little icon of a hand. Click this if you want to raise your hand to ask a question. Alternatively there is a question box where you can type questions. There will be time for questions at the end of the webinar
I want to begin by giving you a bit of background on the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, or WAGGGS as we are commonly referred to as. WAGGGS acts as the global secretariat of the international movement of girl guiding and girl scouting. We have 145 Member Organizations and 10 million girl and young women members across the world. We are also split into 5 regions: Europe, Western Hemisphere, Africa, Arab and Asia-pacific Our vision as an organization is that we want to see that All girls and young women are valued and take action to change the world. We aim to achieve this through our mission to enable girls and young women to develop their fullest potential as responsible citizens of the world .
So what is the CSW? The Commission on the Status of Women is a functional commission of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), one of the main UN organs within the United Nations . Every year, representatives of Member States gather at United Nations Headquarters in New York to evaluate progress on gender equality, identify challenges, set global standards and formulate concrete policies to promote gender equality and advancement of women worldwide. We will be attending the 57 th session of the annual CSW. At each CSW there are 3 issues that are discussed There is the review issue: this is where member states look at an issue that they previously discussed at the CSW. This year they will review equal sharing of responsibilities between women and men, including caregiving in the context of HIV/AIDS Secondly we have the priority theme. This is the main issue looked at during CSW. This year it will be the Elimination and prevention of all forms of violence against women and girls And finally they have an emerging issue. This theme has yet to be announced for the 57 th session.
As this is an important year for WAGGGS, there will be a large WAGGGS delegation attending CSW. It will consist of 11 Youth delegates. We have delegates coming from all 5 regions of WAGGGS. We have delegates form Netherlands, Tunisia, Sri Lanka, Canada, Burkina Faso, Australia, Madagascar, New Zealand, Pakistan, UK and Zambia We also have 3 Delegation Coordinators – these are previous CSW delegates who will mentor you as youth delegates at the CSW. The delegation will be supported by 2 Support Coordinators. These people are WAGGGS staff members from the World centers and regional staff. We will also have a WAGGGS World Board representative in the delegation. Jill from Canada will be representing the World Board. We have 4 UN Team members who are based in NY and lobby the UN for WAGGGS throughout the year. There will also be 4 staff members in the delegation from the World Bureau in London, including myself who will lead the delegation
As I’m sure you all know, the CSW takes place at the UN Headquarters in New York. Our hotel will be situated very close to the HQ As youth delegates you will all be arriving on 28 Feb. We will have 2 days of training and 1 orientation day, where you will help facilitate workshops for younger girls. Then you will attend the first week of CSW and depart on the 9 march.
So why does WAGGGS attend advocacy events such as the CSW? Well WAGGGS has 6 core objectives at these events Raise WAGGGS visibility and profile For people to understand and see that WAGGGS is an active advocacy organizations for girls 2. Make the voice of young women heard Provide a platform for members to be able to have their say on decisions that directly affect them 3. Join the voices of young women together Speak out collectively as the global movement of 10 million girls and young women 4. Put young women in the lead For you to take the lead and demonstrate that young women are not just the leaders of tomorrow, but also the leaders of today 5. Promote WAGGGS in NGO/UN agency arena To make a name for ourselves as experts in girls. 6. Promote WAGGGS to media and funders To ensure we can continue to bring delegations to these events, we need to showcase ourselves and our work to media and funders.
At the CSW you will take part in a lot of new and exciting activities You will follow the negotiations that Member States have within the main assembly You will attend Member State and other NGO side events exploring issues relating to the theme. You will lobby decision-makers and Member States on the Agreed Conclusions. The Agreed Conclusions are the main output document of the CSW. This is where we really want to make sure that the needs of girls are recognised You will attend the Young Women’s caucus and work with other young women to review the Agreed Conclusions And of course you will promote the STV campaign and all the great work that GG and GS do
