MARKET WRAP
Indian markets down 2.10%, Nifty slips below 5400 level; down 116 pts at 5396.
Food price inflation jumped to 17.05% & fuel price inflation came up at 11.61% y/y
Global markets surges to multi years high, Nasdaq up 3% and FTSE gained 2%.
Indian equity market ended down with Nifty slipping below the crucial level of 5400.
Nifty tanked 116.4 pts or 2.10% to end at 5395.75 while Sensex shredded 387.82 pts
this week to settle at 18008 after testing the low of 17927. Bank nifty too ended down
2% this week slicing down 213.2 pts to end at 10423. Nifty may further test the level of
5240; its support trend line drawn from toughs of June 2006 . In frontline stocks, DLF,
Hindalco industries, Siemens and ONGC gained 4 - 6% this week.
India’s food price inflation accelerated by 1.48% to 17.05% vs.15.57% w/w on the back
of costlier vegetables, fruits and milk and Fuel price inflation jumped to 11.61%.
The exports in Dec were up 36.40% to $22.5 Bn while imports for the month fell by
11.10% to $25.10 Bn. In quarterly results, CIPLA Q3FY11 net profit came down by Rs.
53.3 Cr. at Rs. 232.7 Cr. while its net sales were up at Rs. 1501.4 Cr. Suzlon posted a
net loss of Rs. 254 Cr vs. profit of Rs. 14.1 Crore.
Global equity markets surged to multi years high with developed economies growing
steadily; DJIA ended above 12K level at 12093, up 268.5 pts. Nasdaq posted its one of
the best week, up 3% or 82.4 pts at 2769.3 while S&P 500 gained 34.5 pts or 2.7% at
1311. ADP Non-farm employment change came better than expected at 187K while U.S
manufacturing recorded its largest gain in jobs since Aug 1998. In Euro zone, FTSE
gained 116 pts to end at 5998, DAX up 113 pts at 7216.2 and CAC up 45 pts at 7216.
