MARKET WRAP
Indian markets ended up 2.8%, Nifty added 149 pts and Sensex rallied 483 pts.
Headline WPI inflation eased down to 8.23% in January vs. 8.43% in December.
Global markets surges to mutli-year highs, DJIA up 73 pts & Hangseng up 3.4%.
Indian equity market ended up 2.8% post 3 weeks of downtrend on positive global cues
though this pullback rally saw profit booking later in the week. Nifty added 149 pts to
settle at 5458 while Sensex rallied 483 pts to settle at 18211. Bank nifty future was
major gainer adding 464 pts to end at 10927 on the back of rally in heavyweight banking
stocks like SBI, Axis, HDFC and ICICI bank. In Metal space, Jindal Steel, Tata Steel
and Sesa Goa were major gainers adding 6 – 10%.
India’s January headline WPI inflation eased down marginally to 8.23% vs. 8.43% in
Dec and it was complimented by reducing food price inflation which came at 11.05% vs.
13.07% w/w while fuel price inflation jumped to 11.92% vs. 11.61% w/w. WPI inflation is
expected to further come down to 8% due to decline in onion prices and other
vegetables. India’s exports grew much better than expected, by 32.5% y/y to USD 20.6
Bn and by Feb is expected to cross USD 200 Bn.
Global equity markets ended positive as developed economies lead while Asian
markets bounced back post China’s monetary action raising bank reserves to curb
inflation. DJIA soared to multi year highs adding 73 pts to end at 12391 while S&P
added 2.6 pts to settle at 1343. FTSE gained 20 pts to end at 6083, DAX added 7426
while CAC leaded the region, up 55 pts to end at 4157. Asian markets bounced back
with Hangseng up 3.4%, Jakarta comp. up 3.3% followed by Nikkei and KLSE
composite up 1.5 - 2.5%
