reach its end. With weeks until graduation, I want to take the time to self–reflect on my journey as
both a Stillman Exchange writer and Seton Hall student. I grew immensely as a person and I want to

Why Gay Men and Straight Women Have Such Close Relationships
In a society where homosexuality is an ever–growing topic, one might wonder why gay men tend to
have the closest relationships with straight women. Ellen DeGeneres' once said, "every straight
woman has a gay best friend by their side." Why is this? I decided to read and write about an
experiment that was done to answer the question of why gay men and straight women have such
close relationships. The article's title is, "Friend with Benefits, but Without the Sex: Straight Women
and Gay men Exchange Trustworthy Mating Advice." Previous research has been done on this topic
and found that women tend to enjoy a gay man's companionship because there is not sexual strings
attached and bias advice. Gay men find straight women to be extremely trustworthy. Prior research
not only compared homosexual males vs. straight women, but homosexual males vs. homosexual
males relationships and the same with women. For the current research in this article, researchers
hypothesized that the trustworthiness and honesty that often characterizes gay male–straight female
friendships may be rooted in mating relevant domains. Basically, with the absence of deceptive
mating motivations, one is able to fully feel comfortable and honest within the friendship and not
have to worry that they are being hit on. This experiment was done in two parts. The first

The Wealth of Nations written by Adam Smith, father of the economics, stated that the division of
labor, different tasks assigned to each individual in order to improve proficiency, has resulted in the
greatest improvement in the industry. Although division of labor can be seen in most industries, the
system are more noticeable and often work better in larger corporations. For example, "One man
draws out the wire, another straights it, a third cuts it, a fourth points it, a fifth grinds it at the top for
receiving the head... (pg.11). In this excerpt, each individual might be able to make one pin by
themselves, however, if ten individual divide up the labor, they can produce up to thousand pins per
day. Another excerpt, "In every improved society, the farmer is generally a farer; the manufacturer,
nothing but a manufacturer..." (pg.12), however, display a disadvantage view on division of labor.
While the division of labor are good for industries like the pin industry, the farmers whose tasks of
plowing the field and reaping the harvest can not be divided because they are seasonal in nature.
Also, the agricultural labor can not be more productive with the division of labor. For example, corn
in the undeveloped countries is similar in price as the ones in the developed countries, although
manufactured goods are much cheaper in the latter. In addition, there are three main factors

The film "16 Candles" has very little teacher presence. However, even the lack of teacher presence
presents ideas about teachers and their roles in the schools. The film "16 Candles" opts to focus on
the lives of students outside of a traditional classroom setting. The main focus on the students also
contains several tropes about American high school life, including gender and race. The
representation of these suburban parents, teachers, and students in "16 Candles" is comparable to the
suburban TV show "Buffy: The Vampire Slayer" and they share many similarities in their portrayal
of characters, while differing greatly from urban films. The only teacher in the film appears at the
beginning and is only present for a miniscule amount of screen time. On the chalkboard behind him,

Social Exchange theory Theories are defined as a belief, policy, or procedure proposed or followed
as the basis of action (Theory, n.d.). The theory that I researched is the social exchange theory.
Defined as interpreting people's social interactions that are based on estimates of rewards and
punishment. The research indicates that the theory is valid. I will go further in to depth.
This theory is relevant in many peoples lives. Let me explain in a scenario. A man named Johnathan
was shopping for a graduation gift for his best friend Anna. He spent days trying to find a suitable
gift to give. After days, he finally found the perfect gift. The gift cost a lot of money to get and he
felt proud of it. Later, at graduation, he gave Ann the amazing gift, and wondered what he would get

The main critic to address the inaccuracy of this theory is Katherine Miller. In her publication in
2005 she proposed many objectives regarding the theory. Katherine Stated, "Social Exchange theory

I believe that learning a secondary language is necessary to get where you want to go in life. For

want to go to a different country you will know the main language in that country. Learning a
different language is good to know to make friends living in other places that know a different
language than you. Knowing a secondary language is a graduation requirement and can even help
you improve your test scores.
The first reason you should learn different languages other than your first language is because, you
may need to know it for your job. When you get a job there could be customers that may be
speaking a different language and you will not know how to help them. There could be a person that
is deaf and you will not be able to help them find what they are looking for and help them to your

It is obvious that due the declining education funding and drooping domestic student enrollment
have forced many U.S. colleges and universities to adopt new revenue strategies and attracting
international students seems a reasonable solution. This strategy aims to bring more revenue to the
institutions as well a more diverse environment through a greater diversity of languages, cultures,
and perspective in the classroom.

In a research article written by Richard Hartshorne and Jennifer Baucom (2007), entitled, "Issues
Affecting Cross–Cultural Adaptation of International Graduate Students Richard," published at the
Multicultural Learning and Teaching Journal, the issues or challenges that international graduate
students related to cross–cultural adaption were investigated. The main idea of the study was that
international students need to cope and adjust themselves to a new culture in order to make their
learning experiences more meaningful, and in order to achieve this some barriers must be overcome.
The main purpose of the study, therefore, was to identify the diverse barriers encountered by
international students and then propose ways of overcoming these barriers efficiently. In a much
broader sense, the objectives of the study are two fold: to identify and understand the barriers for
inter cultural adaptation and then provide recommendations on how to lessen or overcome such
barriers with the different stakeholders in mind. The revealed that such barriers are a result in
differences in the international students' home culture and the new or host culture, the differences in
learning environments, and personal uniqueness or the "self." Nevertheless, there are also

I remember waking up from my nap. Airplane was jolting because of the turbulence. My head was
aching by the pressure caused by high altitude. Suddenly the belt lights went on. Pilot started his
speech. He told us we were 10–15 minutes away from landing in New York JFK Airport. I checked
my watch. It was still in my country's timezone. I asked the person that sat next to me for the time.
He casually showed me his wrist watch and asked me where I was from. He was a short but bulky
man with a thick accent that I didn't know where it was from. I told him I was an exchange student
coming from Turkey. We had a pleasant chat with him for that last 20 minutes of our flight. Upon
leaving the aircraft, I saw another Turkish exchange student which was also a friend of mine. She
was very pleased to see me. She told me about the person that sat next to her in the plane and how
loud he snored. After waiting for all the other exchange students, our chaperon led the way to
baggage claim. Our chaperon traveled with us from Turkey. He was also with us during our training
and exchange student camps. Very sarcastic but also very like–able guy. He helped us get through
every rough moment in our camps and training. And now he was with us during our final moments.
After claiming every baggage of every student, we moved to a corner that was unoccupied. We

It has been 2 days since the Jacuzzi incident between me and Connor. Connor has been acting like
he is a little agitated with me. It has also been a week and four days since I last walked through the

My body was experiencing many mixed emotions; our school has hosted many foreign exchange
students in the past, but never have they lived in our home. Yes, we were only going to be hosting

In a research article written by Richard Hartshorne and Jennifer Baucom (2007), entitled, "Issues
Affecting Cross–Cultural Adaptation of International Graduate Students Richard," published at the
Multicultural Learning and Teaching Journal, the issues or challenges that international graduate
students related to cross–cultural adaption were investigated. The main idea of the study was that
international students need to cope and adjust themselves to a new culture in order to make their
learning experiences more meaningful, and in order to achieve this some barriers must be overcome.
The main purpose of the study, therefore, was to recognize the diverse barriers that face the
international students and then propose ways of overcoming these barriers efficiently. In a much
broader sense, the objectives of the study are two–fold: to identify and understand the barriers for
inter–cultural adaptation and then provide recommendations on how to lessen or overcome such
barriers with the different stakeholders in mind. The revealed that such barriers are a result in
differences in the international students' home culture and the new or host culture, the differences in
learning environments, and personal uniqueness or the "self." Nevertheless, there are also

In order to increase cultural understanding, I believe that it's important to view foreign cultures
hands–on with our own eyes, and to meet and interact with the people who live there. This is so

I did this because; the theories are exemplified in both interactions. For my familiar relationship, I
chose my roommate, who has also been my friend for four years. After I logged and reflected on our
conversations, I noticed I was reviewing the conversations as either a negative or a positive, thus
realizing the social exchange theory applied best to my familiar subject. However, social penetration
is exemplified when we talked about sensitive topics. Social penetration is supported more by my
unfamiliar subject, or my coworker, but social exchange is also exemplified when we shared similar
characteristics.
Social exchange theory rates interactions as either a positive or negative. Many of my interactions
between my roommate was more negative than positive. For example on, 3/21/17, she asked for
suggestions on her homework assignment because she wanted to know how to improve it. Also, on,
3/22/17, we were debating on who should drive, despite the fact it was her idea to go out, because
she did not want to, I had to. These conversations seem trivial on the surface, but there small
examples of what I give to the friendship, with nothing in return, making them a cost to the
friendship. Another example of a cost was on, 3/25/17, we had a discussion about profanity, because
she uses profanity excessively and I rarely do. She said she wanted to stop using as much profanity,
but yet she has never made the effort to do so. Thus, each time she uses profanity, it becomes a

are several concerns with the Exchange Student Program at Curtin University, including a general
lack of awareness about the program and what it can offer to students, as well as the requirements
for entry into the program. At the same time, there are benefits. A foreign language is not required,
and the admissions list is relatively small. With that being the case, many people who want to get
into the program can do so with relative ease. The issues addressed here come from an analysis of
the situation and the problems being seen with communication, as well as how the objectives for
success can and should be met, and through what channels. By showcasing the program, it will be
possible to get many more students interested in it – both those who want to visit foreign countries
and those who want to come to Curtin from other countries. Situation Analysis The largest problem
with the Exchange Student Program at Curtin University is that it is not communicated to the
students effectively. There are posters, but they provide little information. The website for the
program is difficult to navigate and can be complicated when one is going back and forth looking
for information. It is easy to get frustrated, since the site is confusing and the information is not
