This document discusses two types of steroids - anabolic steroids and corticosteroids. Anabolic steroids are used to build muscle mass and increase strength, while corticosteroids are used as anti-inflammatory drugs to treat illnesses. Both can be taken orally or through injection. Common side effects of anabolic steroids include health risks like heart disease, while side effects of corticosteroids include weight gain and easy bruising. The document also mentions views of bodybuilder Jay Cutler who sees steroid use as necessary in bodybuilding competitions.
2. ANABOLIC STEROIDS
Anabolic-androgenic steroids
▪ Anabolic – referring to muscle
building
▪ Androgenic – referring to
increased male sexual
characteristics
Classified as a performance
enhancing drug
Used by body builders and
athletes to build muscle,
increase endurance, and
increase strength (which
makes it illegal and unsafe!)
CORTICOSTEROIDS
Closely resembles cortisol, a
hormone that adrenal glands
produce naturally
Used as an
anti-inflammatory drug to
treat such illness; arthritis,
asthma, autoimmune
diseases (such as lupus and
multiple sclerosis), skin
conditions such as eczema
and rashes, and some kinds of
cancer
*Since steroids weaken the immune system,
prolonged use is not recommended!*
3. ANABOLIC
Orally (pill)
Injected (in the buttocks,
thigh, or shoulder)
CORTICOSTEROIDS
Orally (pill)
Injected (only in hospitals
or doctors offices)
Topically (cream or gel)
Inhaled
4. Shrinking of testicles
Prostate gland enlargement
Breast enlargement
(gynecomastia)
Low sperm count
Increased hair growth
Deepened voice
Reduced breast size in women
High blood pressure
Heart attack
Stroke
High cholesterol
Rage
Violence and Aggression
Severe Acne
Increased risk of tendinitis and tendon
rupture
Liver abnormalities and tumors
Increased low-density lipoprotein (LDL)
cholesterol
Decreased high-density lipoprotein
(HDL) cholesterol
Heart and circulatory problems
Depression
Drug dependence
Infections or diseases such as HIV or
hepatitis if you're injecting the drugs
Inhibited growth and development,
and risk of future health problems in
teenagers
5. Increased appetite,
weight gain
Sudden mood swings
Muscle weakness
Blurred vision
Increased growth of
body hair
Easy bruising
Lower resistance to
infection
Swollen, "puffy" face
Acne
Osteoporosis (bone
weakening disease)
Worsening of diabetes

Stomach irritation
Nervousness,
restlessness
Having difficulty sleeping

6. Jay Cutler is an American IFBB
professional bodybuilder. He is
also a 4 time Mr. Olympia who’s
view on steroids as being a part of
the sport. Stating society doesn’t
understand what it entails to be a
bodybuilder.
“You do what you do to be the
best in what you do. You do what
you do to win.”

7. I feel that if you use it in any sport that requires you to physically play a sport or
competitively lift, taking steroids would be cheating. Although I consider taking
any performance enhancing drugs cheating, I can see how some sports use
steroids to enhance their bodies for shows, such as bodybuilders.
In 2005, the CDC reported that 672,000 high school athletes have admitted to
using steroids. Which honestly doesn’t surprise me because steroid use at my
high school was not uncommon.
When professional athletes are suspended for steroid use, it sends mixed signals
to younger athletes that steroid use is “okay”.
Because performance enhancing supplements and steroids are so easily
attainable through the internet, anyone can purchase them and use them
incorrectly, which is a major health concern.
Taking steroids can make the body stronger, but how long can the body handle
the amount of stress before physical and mental injury occur is the real question.
There needs to be more done with testing high school athletes and college level
athletes in order to reduce the use of steroids or performance enhancing drugs.
Facebook question: Do you feel that providing more education on steroids
would hinder future use? Or would it be more particle if we could build self-esteem
and self-worth in our youth to hinder future steroid use?
