£1m investment secures
major deal for 120-metre railA £1m investment in our manufacturing
operation has helped us secure a prestigious
contract with Deutsche Bahn, Europe’s
largest purchaser of rail.
The capital expenditure has been used to
enhance our production capabilities at
Scunthorpe Rail and Section Mill (SRSM),
meaning we can now produce rail in lengths
of 120 metres – and the first order has already
been delivered.
The team pulled out all the stops to enhance
the mill in an impressive timescale – just 4
months – to implement the changes before
the first rolling trial on 5 January. Among
the major challenges was adapting the tilt
hydraulic system in Area 1 as it needed to
manage the extra bloom weight. In Area
2, work included extending the run-out
table by around 14 metres to accommodate
the 120-metre rail, while in Area 3 actions
included extended handling equipment,
associated process control modifications and
new stock layouts.
As well as winning the contract with
Deutsche Bahn, which will see us supply
20kt of rail a year throughout the agreement,
the new 120-metre rail capability allows
improved competitiveness for us in the wider
European market. Managing Director Rail Peter Smith said:
“I’d like to congratulate everyone involved in
the project, from those who’ve undertaken
the work at SRSM to those who’ve helped
negotiate and secure the contract.
“Supplying a new product to a major
railway company like Deutsche Bahn is a
significant achievement and demonstrates
our commitment to product and service
innovation. It also shows how increasing our
product range can help us enter new markets
and how we can work in partnership with
customers to become the strategic supply
chain partner of choice.
“While we’ve worked with Deutsche Bahn in
the past, this is the first contract it’s awarded
us as British Steel and we hope this is the
start of a long-term relationship.”
Before the investment, the longest rail
we could produce was 108 metres – a
standard length in the domestic market.
However, many European rail networks
are based on lengths of 60 and 120 metres.
While some European customers accept
60-metre lengths, which can be welded
into 120 metres, most prefer to minimise
the number of welds and favour 120-metre
rolled length.
Rolling 120-metre rails enhances our
productivity for markets taking 60- and
120-metre lengths. The longer run-outs
available mean an increase in speed of
work and yields at our mill, while the
requirement for shorter lengths will
be satisfied using the flexibility of our
Scunthorpe and Hayange facilities.
Business Development Manager
Rail Mike Poulter said: “Our
technical teams continue to

A FUCHS piston grease bin in use at Caster 5
Not long after our launch as British Steel, a
joint team from Procurement and Operations
went down an innovative route to source a
lubricant partner with a portfolio of the highest
standard. A Performance Improvement Plan
(PIP) approach was adopted and subsequent
measures in place equate to an annual cost
saving of more than £1m.
FUCHS LUBRICANTS (UK) plc offers premium
and Original Equipment Manufacturing (OEM)
approved lubricants, designed to significantly
improve the life of machinery and limit
downtime.
Sara Fletcher, Senior Sourcing Lead, said: “The
ultimate objective of the partnership was to
ensure reliability and protection across our
operations. FUCHS offers the right lubricants,
better service techniques, maintenance
practices and schedules. Reliability and
protection of the site operations has
improved, reducing manufacturing costs and
creating savings.”
The value we get from this full-service and
holistic approach to our lubrication needs
includes operations, technical, environment
and processes support. Utilising the PIP
approach, we’ve rationalised the number of
oils, greases and hydraulic fluids on site and
increased fluid awareness. In turn, this has
reduced complexities and volumes used to
such an extent that the number of grades of
lubricants we use has fallen by 35%.
FUCHS has also delivered training
programmes to our junior engineers and
apprentices, giving our future steelworkers
knowledge, understanding and techniques
required to manage lubricant use. Knowing
what type to use where, when and how will
prolong the life of our assets.
Grahame Wallace, Chief Engineer, said: “All
our moving machinery depends on some
form of lubricant for reliable and consistent
operation. In FUCHS, we’ve found a partner
that’s working with us not only to offer
product advice but also technical support and
training for sustainable improvements.”
A FUCHS team is based on our Scunthorpe
site and working with our Engineering
team to improve usage, application and
waste reduction. We’ve also implemented
environmental improvements through FUCHS
funding new oil storage solutions for us.
Jon Ford, Works Engineer Steelmaking,
is chair of the Lubrication Strategy team
and said: “The progress we’re making is
encouraging – we all agree this is vital to
our success. Now we need to continue
the improvements by following the PIPs
and identifying new projects as existing
ones are closed out. We’ve a sustainability
process in place so our excellent
achievements carry on, regardless of who’s
leading the initiative.
“We’ve the ideal partner in FUCHS and
through this strong partnership we’re
confident lubrication will be the foundation
of our engineering strategy.”
FUCHS Steel Sector Key Account Manager
Chris Morris is delighted with the feedback
everyone’s been giving. He said: “The work
we’ve done to date has been very well
received with our PIP philosophy being
adopted as a way of driving improvements.
“Thanks go to the whole FUCHS team –
we’re doing a great job and there are far
more opportunities to explore and develop
together with British Steel in the future.”
We’ve taken on a number of new recruits
across all areas of our business and their
fresh ideas, energy and enthusiasm are
making a real difference to the way we work.
Chas Goldring, Manager Continuous
Improvement, said: “All our new starters
have been – and future ones will be –
trained on basic awareness of Lean and
Continuous Improvement techniques,
which include the foundation blocks of
Daily Management and 5S.”
Some have put that awareness into action
by working on their own small improvement
projects. Placement Student Dan Jackson,
Placement Student Ryan Sahota and
Business Graduate Lucy Chapman are based
in the Business Improvement team and
implementing 5S projects.
Chas said: “The 5S technique – Sort,
Set, Shine, Standardise and Sustain – is
about making your work environment
more effective, more efficient and, very
importantly, safer.”
Ryan is working on his project at Caster 5
on our Scunthorpe site, improving customer
satisfaction. He said: “I’ve created a consistent
standard to identify and track bloom defects
and the relevant actions required. In turn
this reduces delays to the customer through
unnecessary secondary processing.”
Lucy’s project is at the Billet Caster. She
said: “The focus of this project was to
implement a stock management board
monitoring the availability of spares
leading to efficiency improvements. Visual
standards have been set alongside ‘sign
and check’ rotas as control measures to
keep the organised environment in place.”
Dan’s 5S project is at Grinder 5, Process
Bay 2 at the Bloom & Billet Mill. He said:
“Introducing standard operating procedures,
effective waste disposal routes, a cleaning
and maintenance schedule, and organising
tools and equipment will result in a safer,
cleaner and more efficient work area.”
All 3 have enjoyed their time getting actively
involved in improvements. Working outside
the office environment has benefited
them hugely in that they have a better
understanding of what it’s like on plant.
Lucy added: “This has been a brilliant
opportunity to learn on the job and really
make a difference.”
Read more about the projects Dan,
Ryan and Lucy have developed and
implemented in future issues of Steel
Matters. If you’d like to learn about
5S or other improvement tools and
techniques, please contact

The capital expenditure has been used to enhance our production capabilities at Scunthorpe Rail and Section Mill (SRSM), meaning we can now produce rail in lengths of 120 metres – and the first order has already been delivered. The team pulled out all the stops to enhance the mill in an impressive timescale – just 4 months – to implement the changes before the first rolling trial on 5 January. In Area 2, work included extending the run-out table by around 14 metres to accommodate the 120-metre rail, while in Area 3 actions included extended handling equipment, associated process control modifications and new stock layouts. As well as winning the contract with Deutsche Bahn, which will see us supply 20kt of rail a year throughout the agreement, the new 120-metre rail capability allows improved competitiveness for us in the wider European market. Managing Director Rail Peter Smith said: “I’d like to congratulate everyone involved in the project, from those who’ve undertaken the work at SRSM to those who’ve helped negotiate and secure the contract. “Supplying a new product to a major railway company like Deutsche Bahn is a significant achievement and demonstrates our commitment to product and service innovation. It also shows how increasing our product range can help us enter new markets and how we can work in partnership with customers to become the strategic supply chain partner of choice. “While we’ve worked with Deutsche Bahn in the past, this is the first contract it’s awarded us as British Steel and we hope this is the start of a long-term relationship.” Before the investment, the longest rail we could produce was 108 metres – a standard length in the domestic market. However, many European rail networks are based on lengths of 60 and 120 metres. While some European customers accept 60-metre lengths, which can be welded into 120 metres, most prefer to minimise the number of welds and favour 120-metre rolled length. Rolling 120-metre rails enhances our productivity for markets taking 60- and 120-metre lengths. The longer run-outs available mean an increase in speed of work and yields at our mill, while the requirement for shorter lengths will be satisfied using the flexibility of our Scunthorpe and Hayange facilities. Business Development Manager Rail Mike Poulter said: “Our technical teams continue to 10 The new 120-metre rails being rolled at SRSM THERE WAS A GREAT SENSE OF ACHIEVEMENT WHEN WE SAW THE FIRST 120-METRE RAILS COMING OFF THE LINE. BUILDING STRONGER FUTURES STEEL MATTERS / ISSUE 20 / MARCH 2018 4 A FUCHS piston grease bin in use at Caster 5 Not long after our launch as British Steel, a joint team from Procurement and Operations went down an innovative route to source a lubricant partner with a portfolio of the highest standard. A Performance Improvement Plan (PIP) approach was adopted and subsequent measures in place equate to an annual cost saving of more than £1m. FUCHS LUBRICANTS (UK) plc offers premium and Original Equipment Manufacturing (OEM) approved lubricants, designed to significantly improve the life of machinery and limit downtime. Sara Fletcher, Senior Sourcing Lead, said: “The ultimate objective of the partnership was to ensure reliability and protection across our operations. FUCHS offers the right lubricants, better service techniques, maintenance practices and schedules. Reliability and protection of the site operations has improved, reducing manufacturing costs and creating savings.” The value we get from this full-service and holistic approach to our lubrication needs includes operations, technical, environment and processes support. Utilising the PIP approach, we’ve rationalised the number of oils, greases and hydraulic fluids on site and increased fluid awareness. In turn, this has reduced complexities and volumes used to such an extent that the number of grades of lubricants we use has fallen by 35%. FUCHS has also delivered training programmes to our junior engineers and apprentices, giving our future steelworkers knowledge, understanding and techniques required to manage lubricant use. Knowing what type to use where, when and how will prolong the life of our assets. Grahame Wallace, Chief Engineer, said: “All our moving machinery depends on some form of lubricant for reliable and consistent operation. In FUCHS, we’ve found a partner that’s working with us not only to offer product advice but also technical support and training for sustainable improvements.” A FUCHS team is based on our Scunthorpe site and working with our Engineering team to improve usage, application and waste reduction. We’ve also implemented environmental improvements through FUCHS funding new oil storage solutions for us. Jon Ford, Works Engineer Steelmaking, is chair of the Lubrication Strategy team and said: “The progress we’re making is encouraging – we all agree this is vital to our success. Now we need to continue the improvements by following the PIPs and identifying new projects as existing ones are closed out. We’ve a sustainability process in place so our excellent achievements carry on, regardless of who’s leading the initiative. “We’ve the ideal partner in FUCHS and through this strong partnership we’re confident lubrication will be the foundation of our engineering strategy.” FUCHS Steel Sector Key Account Manager Chris Morris is delighted with the feedback everyone’s been giving. He said: “The work we’ve done to date has been very well received with our PIP philosophy being adopted as a way of driving improvements. “Thanks go to the whole FUCHS team – we’re doing a great job and there are far more opportunities to explore and develop together with British Steel in the future.” We’ve taken on a number of new recruits across all areas of our business and their fresh ideas, energy and enthusiasm are making a real difference to the way we work. Chas Goldring, Manager Continuous Improvement, said: “All our new starters have been – and future ones will be – trained on basic awareness of Lean and Continuous Improvement techniques, which include the foundation blocks of Daily Management and 5S.” Some have put that awareness into action by working on their own small improvement projects. Placement Student Dan Jackson, Placement Student Ryan Sahota and Business Graduate Lucy Chapman are based in the Business Improvement team and implementing 5S projects. Chas said: “The 5S technique – Sort, Set, Shine, Standardise and Sustain – is about making your work environment more effective, more efficient and, very importantly, safer.” Ryan is working on his project at Caster 5 on our Scunthorpe site, improving customer satisfaction. He said: “I’ve created a consistent standard to identify and track bloom defects and the relevant actions required. In turn this reduces delays to the customer through unnecessary secondary processing.” Lucy’s project is at the Billet Caster. She said: “The focus of this project was to implement a stock management board monitoring the availability of spares leading to efficiency improvements. Visual standards have been set alongside ‘sign and check’ rotas as control measures to keep the organised environment in place.” Dan’s 5S project is at Grinder 5, Process Bay 2 at the Bloom & Billet Mill. He said: “Introducing standard operating procedures, effective waste disposal routes, a cleaning and maintenance schedule, and organising tools and equipment will result in a safer, cleaner and more efficient work area.” All 3 have enjoyed their time getting actively involved in improvements. Working outside the office environment has benefited them hugely in that they have a better understanding of what it’s like on plant. Lucy added: “This has been a brilliant opportunity to learn on the job and really make a difference.” Read more about the projects Dan, Ryan and Lucy have developed and implemented in future issues of Steel Matters.
