ASME's Digital Path Initiative: Don't Make a Molehill Out of a Mountain!dclsocialmedia
Every decision should be examined from the perspective of ROI. ASME’s path has not been an easy one; many of challenges occurred as a result of early decisions that were made based on a limited perspective of the full project and business requirements. Pitfalls of a large undertaking have dramatic implications for the people, processes, technologies and finances of an organization.
This session will highlight particular issues, including:
- How early decisions influence the course of a project
- How to respond to the project as it emerges
- How to borrow from agile principles
- What to do if you inherit a project midstream
Other topics such as choosing the right partners, understanding scope, identifying anomalies and differences in content, gauging complexities, and when and how to take corrective action while still making progress, will also be covered.

Instruction manuals, users guides, and other types of documentation have always been the way manufacturers distributed the how-to information about their products to customers, as well as sales and support staff and other employees. This kind of catch-all, one-size document forces every user to sift through irrelevant information, applying their own context to find solutions to their problems. Even when they are successful, users remember the experience as painful and tedious. There must be a better way. In 2008 Kees van Mansom and Thei Geurts developed the concept of Documentation 3.0. Using semantic technology, we can create the smart documentation that guides each customer through the actions, decisions, and choices they can take to maximize their user experience.
Find out why and how working working your UX process from the content is a strategy that can lead to becoming a strategic design influencer with a seat at the decision table. It can also reduce UX churn in design due to lack of content at the start of design. Maybe most important, it can drive significant improvements in key metrics including end-user satisfaction.
Lots of project teams have tried out personas. Not all succeed.
In this session, I’ll outline a range of projects (both system and website development) over the past 5 years in which I’ve used personas to bring consensus and user focus to the team delivering. I’ll run through some challenges I’ve faced, and the techniques I’ve tried to overcome them.

DIY Communication: Offering Self Service in the WorkplaceTodd DeLuca, MTSC
DIY (Do it Yourself) communication is allowing others to contribute and manage their own content, increasing their responsibility while allowing some flexibility and freedom. Think of it as a self-serve method for preparing and producing content. You still have to provide framework to deliver the goods, but the effort is collaborative. There’s a reason why people prefer self-service.
