Wayne State University recycled approximately 400 tons of cardboard, 120 tons of paper, 12 tons of plastic, 10 tons of aluminum, and 17 tons of scrap metal in 2015. The university also engaged in various sustainability initiatives like LED lighting retrofits, a battle of the buildings energy competition, and joining the 2030 District Detroit for energy conservation. Wayne State supported alternative transportation through charging stations, a campus shuttle, and bike lanes. The university celebrated Earth Day 2016 by reviewing its sustainability accomplishments and setting new goals like diverting 60% of recyclables and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 25% by 2021.
