Rudolf Diesel was a German inventor born in 1858 who is best known for inventing the diesel engine. He filed a patent for his "new rational heat engine" in 1892 and received the patent in 1893. The first functioning diesel engine was produced in 1897 at an Augsburg engineering plant. It was more efficient than contemporary steam and gasoline engines, sparking interest from industry. Diesel engines eventually came to power ships, trains, trucks and cars and can run on vegetable oil as well as diesel fuel.
