2. The great inventions that brought Car, to the Common are
Birth of Pneumatic Tyre by Dr.Dunlop.
Invention of the automobile itself, by Benz.
Invention of Assembly Line, by Henry Ford, for Model
T.
Thermal Cracking Crude Oil, by William Burton.
Development of other technologies like CRDI, VTEC.
3. It was a birthday gift, to his son by Dr.Dunlop
But that Bicycle made his son to feel the
hardness of the countryside road of the Ireland.
Observing this, he wanted to give his son a
smooth ride and made a history.
Dr.Dunlop, was a surgeon, he used rubber
sheets and sewed in to tubes with help of his
surgeon’s skill.
He made it air tight by apply glue and liquid
rubber.
4. He removed that old hard rubber tyre from the
rim and glued his new rubber sheet tube.
Then he wrapped strips of canvas round the
tube.
And the birth of pneumatic tyres took place,
which made the future rides smooth and
comfortable.
5. It was time when world is travelling on foot or by
horse-carriage.
Karl Benz, a German engineer, was determined to
build the first horse less carriage, what he called
“patent motor-wagen”. He worked on it from the
age of 15 and for 20years.
He made a prototype with 1 cylinder and a single
forward gear,958cc and 0.8hp.
6. Though Karl Benz made a prototype, but he was
not allowed by the officials that a horse less
carriage is against nature.
Benz, was afraid and had no idea how make his
invention public and commercialize.
Bertha Benz , Karl Benz’s wife took over.
She, confident on her husband’s invention, without
permission of her husband and officials, made a
trip to her sister’s house in Pforzheim 106kms
away, marked as Bertha Benz Memorial Route.
This was the first ever long distance travel on
motor-wagen. This made the Benz Motor-Wagen ,
a succcess and a first patented and commercially
sold automobile. This eventually, established
Benz & Cie company.
7. Though the car is in existence for the decades, it
was in 1908, The Car made available to Middle
class Americans by Mr.Henry Ford, by his
genius idea of Assembly Line, which made
production of cars more cheap and fast.
Model-T is the first car manufactured by using
assembly lines and the first affordable car.
From 1908 to 1927 it was revolution, more half
worlds’ cars were Fords. 15 million Model-Ts
were sold, only Volkswagen Beetle surpassed
in 1972.
9. Ford once, went to a pork shop where he saw a
disassembly line, where pigs passed from one
person to another, each person doing particular
job.
This made Ford, to get the idea of assembly
line, where needs proficiency in only one type
of job, and job can be done more quickly.
Assembly Line, born and brought down the
production time and cost drastically.
Thus bringing car more close to common
middle class people.
10. Thermal Cracking is a process of breaking long
hydrocarbon chains of crude oil into saturated
hydrocarbon chains which will by-products like
gasoline, kerosene etc.
William Burton was manager at Standard Oil Co.
at Indiana state.
Realizing that future lies in gasoline, he
desperately worked on producing gasoline in a
cheaper way.
In 1911, at Standard Oil Co. he was ready to risk
his life, to practically test his theoretical work.
11. He along with his men is ready to Thermally
Crack the Crude Oil.
In thermal cracking, the crude oil is heated
upto 700°C and 700kPa, by which the long
hydrocarbons break into small chains.
12. But then, without any safety measures and
crude oil at high temp and pressure which is
highly prone to blasting, all their lives were at
risk.
Burton did not, turned back and continued the
experiment and it was a success.
This made gasoline cheaply available, to be
used in IC engines.
World’s future fuel was created cheaply.
Thus these, major inventions made and brought
the Automobile, to the common man of this
World.
13. There many other developments took place in the
field , which made cars to become more
common mode of transport.
Common Rail Injection systems were
developed first in Switzerland and Japan.
These were very efficient and made cars more
smooth, fuel efficient than their older cam
driven systems. Alfa Romeo 1977 model and
Benz C-class used this technology first.
Today almost all the automobile manufacturers
use this technology with different names.
14. Honda’s engineer Ikou, has developed
VTEC(Variable Time and Lift Electronic
Control) technology, by which volumetric
efficiency of the engines increased.
There will be two cam lobe profiles for high
and low rpm of the engine, controlled by ECU,
this makes fuel injection more efficient.
Today all cars of Honda use i-VTEC engines,
making them performance and efficient
engines.
