Alexander Graham Bell was born in Scotland and spent his youth in England. His family was involved in elocution and experiments with the human voice. Bell became interested in experimenting with the telegraph and teaching the deaf. After graduating from the University of London, he took a teaching position at the Boston School for the Deaf. In 1876, Bell invented the phonautograph, which helped him invent the telephone. He showed a simple first model of the telephone that year and received awards for both the telephone and his multiple telegraph invention.
