Marine pharmacognosy is the study of naturally occurring substances derived from marine sources. The oceans cover over 70% of the earth's surface and are rich in fauna and flora that have potential medicinal uses. Some established marine-derived medicinal products include agar, alginic acid, carrageen, and cod and halibut liver oils. Marine sources have yielded compounds that may have applications as cardiovascular agents, anticancer agents, antimicrobials, antibiotics, and anti-inflammatories. Examples include eptatraetin from hogfish which is a cardiac stimulant, manoalide from sponges which is a neurotoxin and involved in prostaglandin synthesis, and tetrod
Honey is a thick, syrupy liquid produced by bees from the nectar of flowers. It is composed primarily of glucose and fructose sugars along with small amounts of other constituents. Bees collect nectar and deposit it into honeycombs where enzymes convert it into honey through a process of evaporation. The finished honey is then heated and filtered to remove impurities before being packaged for human consumption. Honey has a sweet taste, ranges in color, and is used as a sweetener and nutritional supplement.
Alkaloids are basic (alkali-like), nitrogen-containing organic constituents found in some plants.Alkaloids are normally classified according to the heterocyclic ring system they possess, but some authors prefer a classification based on their biosynthetic origins from amino acids, e.g. phenylalanine, tyrosine or tryptophan. (Justin et al.) Many individual names are formed by adding the suffix "-ine" to the species or generic alkaloids. For example, atropine is isolated from the plant Atropa belladonna, strychnine is obtained from the seed of Strychnine tree. Alkaloids are important chemical compounds that serve as a rich reservoir for drug discovery. Several alkaloids isolated from natural herbs exhibit antiproliferation and antimetastasis effects on various types of cancers both in vitro and in vivo. Alkaloids, such as camptothecin and vinblastine, have already been successfully developed into anticancer drugs.
Since primeval times Flavors and Fragrances has been an element of our life. We have been making it a part of life. By different means we all utilize perfumery and flavor materials, in our everyday life. Fragrances have a key part in religious ceremonies as it was considered to possess strengths to cure and protect from evil. We in our routine life starting from morning till night make different uses of products for personal care and cleanliness which have perfumes. Even consumables like confectionary contain some type of perfume or flavors. Most fragrance comes naturally form many plants. This smell is known as aroma which is a Latin word and those flora which have this aroma are known as aromatic plants. These aromas are extracted from some odoriferous material called essential oils. There is no dearth of aromatic plants in India.

This document discusses alkaloids, which are nitrogen-containing organic compounds that have pharmacological effects on humans and animals. It defines three types of alkaloids - true alkaloids, protoalkaloids, and pseudoalkaloids - and provides examples of each type. The document also examines two specific alkaloid-containing plants - vinca and belladonna - describing their macroscopic characteristics, chemical constituents, and medicinal uses.
Volatile oil 1-2 % contains monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes (e.g. zingiberene).
Gingerol: (Gingerols) which is an oily liquid consisting of homologous phenols and causes the pungency of ginger. The pungency of gingerol is destroyed by boiling with 2% KOH.
Zingerone ????: pungent but possesses in addition a sweet odour. Its pungency is destroyed by prolonged contact with 5% sodium hydroxide
Shogaol represents the compounds formed by loss of water from gingerol; it is an artifact of extraction.
Starch (Ginger bread)and mucilage.
1. The document discusses several subterranean plant organs including rhizomes, roots, tubers, corms, bulbs, and their distinguishing characteristics.
2. Rhizomes are described as horizontally-growing underground stems that produce shoots and adventitious roots, while roots derive from the radical and grow vertically towards soil and water.
3. Ginger and turmeric are provided as examples of medicinal plants whose rhizomes are used as drugs, with details on active constituents and traditional medical uses.
This Slide is not originally mine, this was made by my cousin Karla Paz P. Amba. So, it's HERS. Hope you discover interesting facts about Broccoli. Enjoy!
Phytochemistry essential oils aromatic constituents from animal originMostafa Mahmoud Hegazy
This document discusses aromatic constituents derived from animal sources, including ambergris and musk. It provides details on ambergris, which comes from sperm whale intestinal tracts, and its constituents including ambrein. Natural musk is obtained from the rump glands of musk deer and other animals. Harvesting involves removing the gland and allowing it to dry. Synthetic musks are also discussed as perfume fixatives. The document is authored by Dr. Mostafa Mahmoud Hegazy and provides additional educational resources.
