Agile Project Methodology
- Prof. Prasad Jaywant
Agile Overview: -
 Agile is a measure of both speed and
flexibility, synonymous to an action which is
swift, quickly responsive, nimble and supple.
It is made of three important components:
 Agile Manifesto
 Agile Values
 Agile Principles
Why Agile? : -
 The incremental approach breaks complex projects into simpler mini-projects.
 Accommodates change easily.
 Improves ROI (Return on Investment) through frequent and regular delivery of value to the business.
 Increased Business involvement and satisfaction. Lower development risk, higher quality & lesser defects.
 Progress is measured by running & tested software.
Agile Project Methodology .. contd1
Agile Manifesto: -
 Individuals and Interactions; Working Software; Customer Collaboration; Responding to Change;
Agile Values: -
 Communication; Simplicity; Respect; Courage; Feedback
Agile Principles: -
 Priority is to satisfy customers through early and continuous delivery.
 Business people and developers work together daily throughout the project.
 Communication plays the vital role between Developers and Business people and accept changes at the later
phase of the development. Working software is the primary measure of progress.
Agile Project Methodology .. contd2
Characterization of Agile Processes: -
 Modularity of Development processes
 Iterative short cycles enabling faster verifications and corrections. (Feedback form of Agile)
 Time-bond iteration cycles from 1 to 6 weeks.
 Cautious selection of processes/Economical selection of processes (Parsimony) in development process
removes all unnecessary activities.
 Adaptive to possible emergent new risks.
 Incremental process approach that allows building functional application in small steps and also minimizes
risks.
 Suitable for smaller teams and products.
Agile Project Methodology .. contd3
Scrum: -
 Mostly used and popular Agile method
 Independent, small, self-organizing development teams, usually 30 day release cycles.
 Scrum can be adopted for existing and new project implementations.
 Scrum consists of three roles: Product Owner; Scrum Master & The Team.
Scrum Practices:-
 Sprint Planning Meeting
 Sprint
 Daily Scrum
 Sprint Review Meeting
 Sprint Retrospective.
5 Vs of Big Data - Prof. Nitesh Verma
 Data is collection of figures, facts, numbers, scores in marks, sms etc.
 Companies capture trillions of bytes of information about their customers, suppliers and operations and
millions of networked sensors are being embedded in the physical world in devices such as mobile phones and
automobiles, sensing, creating and communicating data.
 30% of entire population is online and generating the data through various means ex: email, search query, likes
in Facebook pages, creation of Twitter account, sensors.
 BIG DATA is a collection of data sets so LARGE and COMPLEX that it becomes difficult to process using on-hand
database management tools.
 The challenges include capture, storage, search, sharing , analysis and visualization.
5 Vs of Big Data .. contd1
 In 2003 --> Connected devices per person is 0.08
 In 2020 --> Connected devices per person will be 6.58
 More devices than the people -- Each person will be using multiple devices and generate the data.
 Top 2 most visited websites - Google, Facebook
 Google - Time spent per person per month: 1 HH 47Min 42 Sec
 Facebook - Time spent per person per month: 7 HH 45Min 49 Sec
 Google is storing the data which person is searching on daily basis and sell keywords to the organization to
have new customers.
5 Vs of Big Data .. contd2
 The 5 Vs of BIG DATA:
• Volume
• Velocity
• Variety
• Veracity (Accuracy)
• Value
 Why Big Data?
• Business outcomes tied to the business strategy resulting from business decisions.
• Higher productivity, faster time to complete tasks
• Lower total cost of ownership and greater efficiencies in IT.

AI to be adopted by nearly 1 Million
Businesses: ABI Research
 The number of businesses adopting artificial intelligence (AI) technologies will grow from 7,000 in 2017 to
nearly 900,000 in 2022.
 Most enterprises are using machine learning to analyze their existing business for insights. Machine learning
technologies have benefits in specific industries.
 Reduction of false positives in fraud detection, conversational interfaces for chatbots and virtual assistants are
some of the benefits of machine learning to enterprises.
AI to be adopted by nearly 1 Million
Businesses: ABI Research..contd1
 Amazon, American Express, Citrix, Coca Cola, Facebook, Google, Netflix, PayPal, and Uber already deployed
projects powered by machine learning.
 Organizations that are comfortable with uncertainty in outcomes and measuring changes in key performance
indicators (KPIs) will gain from enacting machine learning projects.
 Emerging technologies, including machine learning, cybersecurity, and IOT, will be frustrating to implement and
difficult to measure for companies that focus only on ROI.
IT Industry Layoffs: To escape job cuts,
upskilling is a must
 The Indian IT industry is witnessing a major crisis that has accelerated with the global backlash towards
outsourcing, protectionist policies by developed countries to protect their vote-banks, and changing demands
of global corporate.
 The industry’s growth rate, which always stood at double digits, has, of late, come down to 5-6%, resulting in
‘job losses’, ‘firing’ and ‘layoffs’.
 According to industry body Nasscom, up to 40% of the estimated four-million workforce need reskilling over
the next five years, if they are to keep pace with the changing face and automation of the IT industry.
Therefore, the new mantra to avoid job redundancy is continuous reskilling.
IT Industry Layoffs: To escape job cuts,
upskilling is a must..contd1
 With the unprecedented pace of change, those that fail to go beyond domain specialization would lose
relevance at a faster pace than otherwise.
 The mismatch between skills required and skills available in the market ranked as the second-most critical
problem for the IT/ITeS sector, with 85% of respondents identifying this as a critical issue. The most significant
skill gaps identified were in innovation and strategic thinking (57%)
IoT-driven DDoS attacks on the rise:
Study
 The number of ways that IoT devices can help people and organizations is boundless. However, there’s also
much evidence that the expansion of the Internet enabled through mobility, cloud adoption, and the
proliferation of the Internet of Things, has exposed new attack surfaces. Vulnerabilities are rife, data is
exponentially increasing, privacy is being eroded, and the cost of breaches is becoming debilitating.
 The number of denial-of-service (DoS) or distributed-denial-of-service (DDoS) cyber attacks doubled from 3%
to 6% in 2016, due to the lack of sufficient security controls of Internet-connected Internet of Things (IoT)
devices.
 And of all IoT attacks, 60% originated from Asia, 21% from EMEA and another 19% from the Americas. The
most likely reason for the high volume of attacks from Asia is that technology sourced from the region has
historically been susceptible, and compromised infrastructure tends to be reused to perpetrate additional
nefarious activities.
IoT-driven DDoS attacks on the rise:
Study..contd1
 Global honey pot sensors monitored IoT cyber attacks and their targets over a six-month period. Based on the
credentials used by threat actors, it was determined that 66% of attacks targeted specific IoT devices such as a
particular model of video camera. These attacks appeared to be from compromised IoT devices attempting to
find and compromise even more such devices
 DDoS attacks using IoT devices can impact an organization in multiple ways. They can prevent customers,
partners, and other stakeholders from accessing their organizations' Internet-facing resources, thereby
impacting sales and other daily operations; they can prevent employees and internal systems from accessing
the Internet, disrupting many facts of operations; and affect organizations providing services from the Internet,
which can cause supply chains to be broken.
IoT-driven DDoS attacks on the rise:
Study..contd2
 There are a number of actions that organizations can take to protect their businesses including:
• Make security a primary consideration for all Internet of Things and operational technology device purchases;
• Authorize funding as needed to replace older Internet of Things and operations technology device purchases;
• Conduct threat and vulnerability assessments; and
• Ensure devices are discovered and profiled within an organization.
 According to a February 2017 press release by research firm, Gartner Inc, 8.4 billion connected things will be in
use worldwide in 2017- up 31% in 2016. This number will reach 20.4 billion by 2020. And total spend on
endpoints and services will reach almost $2 trillion in 2017.
Infosys, Wipro, Other IT companies
exploring "Uberisation of Workforce"
 The idea ‘gig economy’ or ‘Uberisation’ of workforce is a practice where talent works on a demand-supply
model, moving across projects and organizations as per the demand.
 Pune-based Persistent Systems recently broke away from traditional practices by including several
freelancers and consultants in a team that worked on a short-term project, a relatively new idea that’s
steadily gaining popularity in the global technology services space.
 What is driving this trend is the changing preference of the young workforce more than the market
uncertainty and political situation in their largest market, the US.
Infosys, Wipro, Other IT companies exploring
"Uberisation of Workforce"..contd1
 Just as people have become comfortable using shared transport with on demand cars, employers will start
looking at on-demand hiring of workforce for specific activities that regular staff cannot fulfill.
 Already, more workers are part of the gig economy in the US than employed by the IT and IT services sectors
combined. As per a study done by Intuit and Emergent Research, the number of on-demand workers in the US
is expected to double in the next four years to almost 9.2 million.
 In India, the number of contract workers is currently pegged at 2.5 million, and may go up to six million over
the next decade, according to staffing firm Team Lease Services.
Infosys, Wipro, Other IT companies exploring
"Uberisation of Workforce"..contd2
 With technology rapidly changing, the cost of reskilling employees is fairly high. With margins under pressure,
it’s easier for a company to reskill 90% of their people and let go of the rest, filling those positions through
contract workers as and when the need arises.
 To start with, companies are using freelancers in areas where it is easy to carve out work like UI/UX, design,
high level architecture and voice/email-based support. Mind Tree is using this for talent acquisition.
The Robots are coming: Machine
learning now enhances itself
 Everybody is talking about MACHINE LEARNING since machines beat human players in chess, jeopardy, and
now even Go.
 People’s cars will be driven by artificial intelligence in the future, and many jobs will be taken over by robots.
There’s a lot of hype, a lot of fear and uncertainty – as so often when new technology has the potential to
disrupt our societies.
 Apply algorithms to almost any kind of digital data to extract information automatically and make decisions in a
seemingly intelligent way. The development of these algorithms, called machine learning, can remain a
cumbersome journey.
The Robots are coming: Machine
learning now enhances itself..contd1
 Modern machine learning algorithms have a large number of parameters that need to be tuned during the
model training process. There’s also a trend to develop more and more complex algorithms that can
automatically drill deeper into the data to find more subtle patterns.
 There are several ways to support the data scientist in the cumbersome lab work of tuning machine learning
model parameters. These approaches are called hyper parameter optimization.
The Robots are coming: Machine
learning now enhances itself..contd2
 In general, there are three different types: parameter sweep, random search and parameter optimization.
1. Parameter sweep
This is an exhaustive search through a pre-defined set of parameter values. The data scientist selects the
candidates of values for each parameter to tune, trains a model with each possible combination and selects the
best-performing model. Here, the final outcome very much depends on the experience and selection of the data
scientist.
2. Random search
This is a search through a set of randomly selected sets of values for the model parameters. With modern
computers, this can provide a less biased approach to finding an optimal set of parameters for the selected
model. As this is a random search there are chances to miss the optimal set unless a sufficient number of
experiments are conducted, which can be expensive.
3. Parameter optimization
Again there are different approaches here, but they all apply modern optimization techniques to find the optimal
solution. This is the best way to find the most appropriate set of parameters for any predictive model, and any
business problem, in the least expensive way. The “Optimal Solution” so to speak.
Telcos leveraging IoT to gain an edge
 Telecom companies are gearing up for a huge data traffic across networks, not just data consumed or
generated by people but by the data which will be brought in by the devices interacting with each other
connected through Internet of Things (IoT) technology.
 Telecom operators being providers of network connectivity will play a crucial role in the process majorly in
Machine-To-Machine communication which calls for operators to work around new rating plans and enable
uninterrupted connectivity.
 Machine-To-Machine (M2M) is a technology that ensures connectivity between machines, providing them a
restricted level of autonomy to sense and take decisions. The flexibility and variety of new connectivity
platforms enabled by M2M make businesses and lives simpler.
Telcos leveraging IoT to gain an
edge..contd1
 Benefits like Smart Metering, track & trace, remote management, monitoring and notification capabilities are
helping businesses and governments realize the potential of M2M and Internet-Of-things (IoT) technology.
 Indian telecom major Bharti Airtel is set to enter home automation and smart home segment soon. The new
segment will be driven by Internet of Things (IoT) and machine-to-machine solutions which enables users to
control house-hold utility such as heating, air conditioning, music, lighting and security systems through smart
phones.
 IoT is not a technology which can be implemented on its own, instead it is a co-ordination of technology among
various devices. There has be a synergy and the entire ecosystem has to work together to mature and make it
work. Operators need to join hands with right solution providers and system integrators.
Telematics can play a Big role in
improving safety on roads
 Telematics is not only improving the quality of life by adding functionality to the auto sector, but also supplying
data for risk assessment, making driving a safe experience.
 Increased focus on driver safety, reduced cost of connectivity, higher rate of Smartphone penetration and
stringent automotive safety regulations are key reasons fuelling the market growth of telematics.
 Telematics is not only improving the quality of lifestyle by adding functionality and value to the auto industry, it
has changed the face of motor insurance business.
 Telematics is turning the traditional auto insurance business model by benefiting both insurers and consumers
by providing data for better risk assessment and offering over-the-top incentives.
Telematics can play a Big role in
improving safety on roads..contd1
 India witnesses the highest number of road accidents every year owing to poor infrastructure and precarious
environment. Telematics can curb these rising numbers, as real-time data and the insights generated from that
data help in making the driver cautious of the situation.
 In the coming years, telematics will play a major role in revolutionizing the auto industry by offering the
potential to create a system of intelligent traffic management which will provide live traffic updates, real-time
positioning, tracking and parking management, stolen vehicle recovery, electronic toll systems and vehicle
diagnostics.
 The European Union has mandated that all new cars approved to be sold in the region must have the capability
to make an automated call to the emergency services in the case of an accident.
 India has endlessly spoken about autonomous and connected cars and how technologies like telematics and
IoT have brought in more rigour to this space, but the market is still in a nascent stage. An enhanced customer
experience coupled with better safety can shift this segment into high gear.
Small software firms bet big on GST
regime
 Small software companies are bullish on launch of Goods and Services Tax (GST) from July 1 expecting a good
demand for their software from small and medium-size enterprise (SMEs) to be GST compliant.
 These small software companies are targeting over 80 lakh users who would come under the GST network.
And, of this nearly 85 per cent are SMEs who would be dependent on cloud-based software to be offered in
monthly or yearly subscription model.
 Success of GST implementation will depend heavily on technology infrastructure that businesses deploy.
Millions of SMEs will have to adopt GST-enabled applications for invoicing, tax filing and other business
transactions. With returns being required to be filed online thrice a month, back-office operations can no
longer be treated as low priority tasks.
Small software firms bet big on GST
regime..contd1
 Tally Solutions, provider of Enterprise Resource Planning software, launched Tally.ERP 9 Release 6 GST ready
accounting and compliance software.
 There are around 4-5 million GST registered companies who maintain their books of accounts on Tally. Tally.ERP
9 Release 6 is the company’s first offering for businesses to solve for their immediate requirements.
 According to Sudhir Singh, Managing Director, Marg ERP, the demand for its GST software will come in two
ways:
• Existing clients who immediately are going to have implications of GST. Of this, nearly 50 per cent will need to
buy license business application. “We are looking around 5 lakh licensees, "Singh
• Rashmi Khetrapal, Founder, Count Magic, said its product is offered free for the first month to help traders
and businesses understand its usefulness. Count Magic also offers an E-locker for accounting documents that
makes seamless sharing of information with their CA’s and further simplifying accounting hassles.
GST on July 1: What's the impact on IT
Industry
 GST (Goods and Service tax) policy will subsume various indirect taxes at center and state into the umbrella of
Central GST, Inter-state GST, and State GST. This will remove the effect of double taxation and also the cascading
effect of taxes i.e. tax on tax.
 As the GST is able to simplify life of common man, the IT sector though is worried as GST would create
challenges for IT service exporters and e commerce players especially. IT industry which is already facing the
issue of revitalizing the skills of its manpower for the Digital era, the changes in tax policy would aggravate the
situation.
 The National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM) president R. Chandrasekhar quoted
that complex billing and invoicing requirements due to the supply and valuation provisions of the GST bill
would complicate taxation for IT companies. The overall competitiveness of the IT industry would be
compromised owing to the complexity.
GST on July 1: What's the impact on IT
Industry..contd1
 List of challenges :
• Service sector cost of compliance: - Currently IT services are monitored under the simple administration where
there is only one single point of taxation i.e. Central service tax and one single point of registration. As opposed
to this under GST model, point of taxation has been increased to 111. This is because if the service industry has
a presence all over India they would have to seek registrations in 37 jurisdictions i.e. 29 states, 7 union
territories and one central region. Also we have three types of indirect taxes under GST, therefore multiplying
three GST’s with 37 will raise the final point of taxation to 111. This means that IT industry have to register and
file compliance report at as high as 111 points.
• So this could definitely prove to be a challenge for IT industry to move from single point to multi-point of
taxation, thus dealing with center and state authorities ultimately increasing the compliance cost.
• Complex Taxation: - Erstwhile taxation of the service IT industry was carried out from the one central location
from where the organization head office operates. But by the introduction of ‘Place of supply’ provision in GST,
these billing and invoicing will be split depending on the end customers address of residence. Thus service IT
industry should obtain registration in those states individually to whom their end customer belongs. By
performing such steps the state GST component of GST will be passed on to the states respectively. This whole
system of multiple invoicing for same contract delivered under different states will complicate the already
complex “TAXATION”.
GST on July 1: What's the impact on IT
Industry..contd2
• Taxes and its cascading effect: - Cascading effect of taxes can be best explained with the help of an example. If an
IT service provider delivers a service to the client. To deliver a particular service he require some input cost ( In
our case assume IT software). He acquired suppose the software for Rs 100 including the tax paid on it of Rs 10.
During the service delivery he does value addition of Rs 40 and delivers the product making the gross value of
deliverables to Rs 140. If the tax charged on the final end product is 10%, the tax on the output of good will be Rs
14.
Ø Under Prevailing Tax System
The product will be charged to the end customer at Rs 154 (Rs 140 + Rs 14)
Ø Under GST
The product will be charged to the end customer at Rs 144 (Rs 140 + Rs (14-10))
• Here the service provider has the advantage under GST to reduce the input credit (Offset tax already paid
during purchase) at the time of sell.
• Thus in GST regime the cost of delivery to the client will be less and the cascading effect of taxes prevailing
currently will be evaded. Also reduction in the transaction cost will increase competitiveness in IT industry
market.
GST on July 1: What's the impact on IT
Industry..contd3
• Transition from service tax rate to GST: - Software services under current tax system are charged at 15% service
tax. These services under GST rate will be charged under 18%. This will allow the IT service prices to rise for
end customers.
 Similarly the prices of the electronic packaged software (Software CD’s) are currently charged at 15% service
tax + 5% VAT which under GST will be charged at 18%. Thus reducing the net price of electronic software sold.
 Thus, there are always pros and cons to every policy change by government, and GST is no different from this.
Though it is a long term strategy, and the positive impact shall be seen in the long run only, GST will act as a
future proof for Indian businesses to become workable.
Ransomware 2.0 blitzes several Indian,
European companies
 About a month after Wanna-Cry locked up thousands of computers, a new wave of ransomware attacks
targeted users across the world, including India and Europe. Consumer, shipping, aviation and oil and gas
companies were hit in the UK, Russia, France, Spain and elsewhere.
 Petwrap, believed to be an advanced version of an old ransomware known as Petya, locked the computer
screens of as many as 20 companies globally with $300 being demanded to free them up. Mondelez, MerckBSE
0.32 % and Maersk were targeted by the ransomware.
 Petwrap attacked some companies in the UK, Russia and Ukraine, with subsidiaries of these companies in India
also impacted.
 Neeraj Bansal, deputy chairman of the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust also confirmed that operations at Gateway
Terminals India, operated by Maersk Group-owned APM Terminals at the Mumbai-based port, has been
impacted.
Ransomware 2.0 blitzes several Indian,
European companies..contd1
 An Indian automobile company and a manufacturing company were targeted by another ransomware called
Mamba on Tuesday morning. A forensic investigator involved in investigating the PetWrap and Mamba attacks
said both may have exploited similar software loopholes.
 The Trojan targets HR departments with emails that have subject lines reading CV, candidate folio, applicant
profile etc. Once installed, it encrypts data and restarts the system. After this, the user gets a message asking
for $300 to a Bitcoin account.
 There is a need for endpoint security which will automatically detect such vulnerability and patch it. But a
decryption key will soon be available in the market in the next few days.
 Around 50% of organizations and individuals across India do not use a licensed version of Windows or anti-
virus, so chances of this spreading are huge.
THANK YOU

  • 4. Agile Project Methodology - Prof. Prasad Jaywant Agile Overview: -  Agile is a measure of both speed and flexibility, synonymous to an action which is swift, quickly responsive, nimble and supple. It is made of three important components:  Agile Manifesto  Agile Values  Agile Principles Why Agile? : -  The incremental approach breaks complex projects into simpler mini-projects.  Accommodates change easily.  Improves ROI (Return on Investment) through frequent and regular delivery of value to the business.  Increased Business involvement and satisfaction. Lower development risk, higher quality & lesser defects.  Progress is measured by running & tested software.
  • 5. Agile Project Methodology .. contd1 Agile Manifesto: -  Individuals and Interactions; Working Software; Customer Collaboration; Responding to Change; Agile Values: -  Communication; Simplicity; Respect; Courage; Feedback Agile Principles: -  Priority is to satisfy customers through early and continuous delivery.  Business people and developers work together daily throughout the project.  Communication plays the vital role between Developers and Business people and accept changes at the later phase of the development. Working software is the primary measure of progress.
  • 6. Agile Project Methodology .. contd2 Characterization of Agile Processes: -  Modularity of Development processes  Iterative short cycles enabling faster verifications and corrections. (Feedback form of Agile)  Time-bond iteration cycles from 1 to 6 weeks.  Cautious selection of processes/Economical selection of processes (Parsimony) in development process removes all unnecessary activities.  Adaptive to possible emergent new risks.  Incremental process approach that allows building functional application in small steps and also minimizes risks.  Suitable for smaller teams and products.
  • 7. Agile Project Methodology .. contd3 Scrum: -  Mostly used and popular Agile method  Independent, small, self-organizing development teams, usually 30 day release cycles.  Scrum can be adopted for existing and new project implementations.  Scrum consists of three roles: Product Owner; Scrum Master & The Team. Scrum Practices:-  Sprint Planning Meeting  Sprint  Daily Scrum  Sprint Review Meeting  Sprint Retrospective.
  • 8. 5 Vs of Big Data - Prof. Nitesh Verma  Data is collection of figures, facts, numbers, scores in marks, sms etc.  Companies capture trillions of bytes of information about their customers, suppliers and operations and millions of networked sensors are being embedded in the physical world in devices such as mobile phones and automobiles, sensing, creating and communicating data.  30% of entire population is online and generating the data through various means ex: email, search query, likes in Facebook pages, creation of Twitter account, sensors.  BIG DATA is a collection of data sets so LARGE and COMPLEX that it becomes difficult to process using on-hand database management tools.  The challenges include capture, storage, search, sharing , analysis and visualization.
  • 9. 5 Vs of Big Data .. contd1  In 2003 --> Connected devices per person is 0.08  In 2020 --> Connected devices per person will be 6.58  More devices than the people -- Each person will be using multiple devices and generate the data.  Top 2 most visited websites - Google, Facebook  Google - Time spent per person per month: 1 HH 47Min 42 Sec  Facebook - Time spent per person per month: 7 HH 45Min 49 Sec  Google is storing the data which person is searching on daily basis and sell keywords to the organization to have new customers.

  • 38. IT Industry Layoffs: To escape job cuts, upskilling is a must  The Indian IT industry is witnessing a major crisis that has accelerated with the global backlash towards outsourcing, protectionist policies by developed countries to protect their vote-banks, and changing demands of global corporate.  The industry’s growth rate, which always stood at double digits, has, of late, come down to 5-6%, resulting in ‘job losses’, ‘firing’ and ‘layoffs’.  According to industry body Nasscom, up to 40% of the estimated four-million workforce need reskilling over the next five years, if they are to keep pace with the changing face and automation of the IT industry. Therefore, the new mantra to avoid job redundancy is continuous reskilling.
  • 39. IT Industry Layoffs: To escape job cuts, upskilling is a must..contd1  With the unprecedented pace of change, those that fail to go beyond domain specialization would lose relevance at a faster pace than otherwise.  The mismatch between skills required and skills available in the market ranked as the second-most critical problem for the IT/ITeS sector, with 85% of respondents identifying this as a critical issue. The most significant skill gaps identified were in innovation and strategic thinking (57%)
  • 40. IoT-driven DDoS attacks on the rise: Study  The number of ways that IoT devices can help people and organizations is boundless. However, there’s also much evidence that the expansion of the Internet enabled through mobility, cloud adoption, and the proliferation of the Internet of Things, has exposed new attack surfaces. Vulnerabilities are rife, data is exponentially increasing, privacy is being eroded, and the cost of breaches is becoming debilitating.  The number of denial-of-service (DoS) or distributed-denial-of-service (DDoS) cyber attacks doubled from 3% to 6% in 2016, due to the lack of sufficient security controls of Internet-connected Internet of Things (IoT) devices.  And of all IoT attacks, 60% originated from Asia, 21% from EMEA and another 19% from the Americas. The most likely reason for the high volume of attacks from Asia is that technology sourced from the region has historically been susceptible, and compromised infrastructure tends to be reused to perpetrate additional nefarious activities.
  • 41. IoT-driven DDoS attacks on the rise: Study..contd1  Global honey pot sensors monitored IoT cyber attacks and their targets over a six-month period. Based on the credentials used by threat actors, it was determined that 66% of attacks targeted specific IoT devices such as a particular model of video camera. These attacks appeared to be from compromised IoT devices attempting to find and compromise even more such devices  DDoS attacks using IoT devices can impact an organization in multiple ways. They can prevent customers, partners, and other stakeholders from accessing their organizations' Internet-facing resources, thereby impacting sales and other daily operations; they can prevent employees and internal systems from accessing the Internet, disrupting many facts of operations; and affect organizations providing services from the Internet, which can cause supply chains to be broken.
  • 42. IoT-driven DDoS attacks on the rise: Study..contd2  There are a number of actions that organizations can take to protect their businesses including: • Make security a primary consideration for all Internet of Things and operational technology device purchases; • Authorize funding as needed to replace older Internet of Things and operations technology device purchases; • Conduct threat and vulnerability assessments; and • Ensure devices are discovered and profiled within an organization.  According to a February 2017 press release by research firm, Gartner Inc, 8.4 billion connected things will be in use worldwide in 2017- up 31% in 2016. This number will reach 20.4 billion by 2020. And total spend on endpoints and services will reach almost $2 trillion in 2017.
  • 43. Infosys, Wipro, Other IT companies exploring "Uberisation of Workforce"  The idea ‘gig economy’ or ‘Uberisation’ of workforce is a practice where talent works on a demand-supply model, moving across projects and organizations as per the demand.  Pune-based Persistent Systems recently broke away from traditional practices by including several freelancers and consultants in a team that worked on a short-term project, a relatively new idea that’s steadily gaining popularity in the global technology services space.  What is driving this trend is the changing preference of the young workforce more than the market uncertainty and political situation in their largest market, the US.
  • 44. Infosys, Wipro, Other IT companies exploring "Uberisation of Workforce"..contd1  Just as people have become comfortable using shared transport with on demand cars, employers will start looking at on-demand hiring of workforce for specific activities that regular staff cannot fulfill.  Already, more workers are part of the gig economy in the US than employed by the IT and IT services sectors combined. As per a study done by Intuit and Emergent Research, the number of on-demand workers in the US is expected to double in the next four years to almost 9.2 million.  In India, the number of contract workers is currently pegged at 2.5 million, and may go up to six million over the next decade, according to staffing firm Team Lease Services.
  • 45. Infosys, Wipro, Other IT companies exploring "Uberisation of Workforce"..contd2  With technology rapidly changing, the cost of reskilling employees is fairly high. With margins under pressure, it’s easier for a company to reskill 90% of their people and let go of the rest, filling those positions through contract workers as and when the need arises.  To start with, companies are using freelancers in areas where it is easy to carve out work like UI/UX, design, high level architecture and voice/email-based support. Mind Tree is using this for talent acquisition.
  • 46. The Robots are coming: Machine learning now enhances itself  Everybody is talking about MACHINE LEARNING since machines beat human players in chess, jeopardy, and now even Go.  People’s cars will be driven by artificial intelligence in the future, and many jobs will be taken over by robots. There’s a lot of hype, a lot of fear and uncertainty – as so often when new technology has the potential to disrupt our societies.  Apply algorithms to almost any kind of digital data to extract information automatically and make decisions in a seemingly intelligent way. The development of these algorithms, called machine learning, can remain a cumbersome journey.
  • 47. The Robots are coming: Machine learning now enhances itself..contd1  Modern machine learning algorithms have a large number of parameters that need to be tuned during the model training process. There’s also a trend to develop more and more complex algorithms that can automatically drill deeper into the data to find more subtle patterns.  There are several ways to support the data scientist in the cumbersome lab work of tuning machine learning model parameters. These approaches are called hyper parameter optimization.
  • 48. The Robots are coming: Machine learning now enhances itself..contd2  In general, there are three different types: parameter sweep, random search and parameter optimization. 1. Parameter sweep This is an exhaustive search through a pre-defined set of parameter values. The data scientist selects the candidates of values for each parameter to tune, trains a model with each possible combination and selects the best-performing model. Here, the final outcome very much depends on the experience and selection of the data scientist. 2. Random search This is a search through a set of randomly selected sets of values for the model parameters. With modern computers, this can provide a less biased approach to finding an optimal set of parameters for the selected model. As this is a random search there are chances to miss the optimal set unless a sufficient number of experiments are conducted, which can be expensive. 3. Parameter optimization Again there are different approaches here, but they all apply modern optimization techniques to find the optimal solution. This is the best way to find the most appropriate set of parameters for any predictive model, and any business problem, in the least expensive way. The “Optimal Solution” so to speak.
  • 49. Telcos leveraging IoT to gain an edge  Telecom companies are gearing up for a huge data traffic across networks, not just data consumed or generated by people but by the data which will be brought in by the devices interacting with each other connected through Internet of Things (IoT) technology.  Telecom operators being providers of network connectivity will play a crucial role in the process majorly in Machine-To-Machine communication which calls for operators to work around new rating plans and enable uninterrupted connectivity.  Machine-To-Machine (M2M) is a technology that ensures connectivity between machines, providing them a restricted level of autonomy to sense and take decisions. The flexibility and variety of new connectivity platforms enabled by M2M make businesses and lives simpler.
  • 50. Telcos leveraging IoT to gain an edge..contd1  Benefits like Smart Metering, track & trace, remote management, monitoring and notification capabilities are helping businesses and governments realize the potential of M2M and Internet-Of-things (IoT) technology.  Indian telecom major Bharti Airtel is set to enter home automation and smart home segment soon. The new segment will be driven by Internet of Things (IoT) and machine-to-machine solutions which enables users to control house-hold utility such as heating, air conditioning, music, lighting and security systems through smart phones.  IoT is not a technology which can be implemented on its own, instead it is a co-ordination of technology among various devices. There has be a synergy and the entire ecosystem has to work together to mature and make it work. Operators need to join hands with right solution providers and system integrators.
  • 51. Telematics can play a Big role in improving safety on roads  Telematics is not only improving the quality of life by adding functionality to the auto sector, but also supplying data for risk assessment, making driving a safe experience.  Increased focus on driver safety, reduced cost of connectivity, higher rate of Smartphone penetration and stringent automotive safety regulations are key reasons fuelling the market growth of telematics.  Telematics is not only improving the quality of lifestyle by adding functionality and value to the auto industry, it has changed the face of motor insurance business.  Telematics is turning the traditional auto insurance business model by benefiting both insurers and consumers by providing data for better risk assessment and offering over-the-top incentives.
  • 52. Telematics can play a Big role in improving safety on roads..contd1  India witnesses the highest number of road accidents every year owing to poor infrastructure and precarious environment. Telematics can curb these rising numbers, as real-time data and the insights generated from that data help in making the driver cautious of the situation.  In the coming years, telematics will play a major role in revolutionizing the auto industry by offering the potential to create a system of intelligent traffic management which will provide live traffic updates, real-time positioning, tracking and parking management, stolen vehicle recovery, electronic toll systems and vehicle diagnostics.  The European Union has mandated that all new cars approved to be sold in the region must have the capability to make an automated call to the emergency services in the case of an accident.  India has endlessly spoken about autonomous and connected cars and how technologies like telematics and IoT have brought in more rigour to this space, but the market is still in a nascent stage. An enhanced customer experience coupled with better safety can shift this segment into high gear.
  • 53. Small software firms bet big on GST regime  Small software companies are bullish on launch of Goods and Services Tax (GST) from July 1 expecting a good demand for their software from small and medium-size enterprise (SMEs) to be GST compliant.  These small software companies are targeting over 80 lakh users who would come under the GST network. And, of this nearly 85 per cent are SMEs who would be dependent on cloud-based software to be offered in monthly or yearly subscription model.  Success of GST implementation will depend heavily on technology infrastructure that businesses deploy. Millions of SMEs will have to adopt GST-enabled applications for invoicing, tax filing and other business transactions. With returns being required to be filed online thrice a month, back-office operations can no longer be treated as low priority tasks.
  • 54. Small software firms bet big on GST regime..contd1  Tally Solutions, provider of Enterprise Resource Planning software, launched Tally.ERP 9 Release 6 GST ready accounting and compliance software.  There are around 4-5 million GST registered companies who maintain their books of accounts on Tally. Tally.ERP 9 Release 6 is the company’s first offering for businesses to solve for their immediate requirements.  According to Sudhir Singh, Managing Director, Marg ERP, the demand for its GST software will come in two ways: • Existing clients who immediately are going to have implications of GST. Of this, nearly 50 per cent will need to buy license business application. “We are looking around 5 lakh licensees, "Singh • Rashmi Khetrapal, Founder, Count Magic, said its product is offered free for the first month to help traders and businesses understand its usefulness. Count Magic also offers an E-locker for accounting documents that makes seamless sharing of information with their CA’s and further simplifying accounting hassles.
  • 55. GST on July 1: What's the impact on IT Industry  GST (Goods and Service tax) policy will subsume various indirect taxes at center and state into the umbrella of Central GST, Inter-state GST, and State GST. This will remove the effect of double taxation and also the cascading effect of taxes i.e. tax on tax.  As the GST is able to simplify life of common man, the IT sector though is worried as GST would create challenges for IT service exporters and e commerce players especially. IT industry which is already facing the issue of revitalizing the skills of its manpower for the Digital era, the changes in tax policy would aggravate the situation.  The National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM) president R. Chandrasekhar quoted that complex billing and invoicing requirements due to the supply and valuation provisions of the GST bill would complicate taxation for IT companies. The overall competitiveness of the IT industry would be compromised owing to the complexity.
  • 56. GST on July 1: What's the impact on IT Industry..contd1  List of challenges : • Service sector cost of compliance: - Currently IT services are monitored under the simple administration where there is only one single point of taxation i.e. Central service tax and one single point of registration. As opposed to this under GST model, point of taxation has been increased to 111. This is because if the service industry has a presence all over India they would have to seek registrations in 37 jurisdictions i.e. 29 states, 7 union territories and one central region. Also we have three types of indirect taxes under GST, therefore multiplying three GST’s with 37 will raise the final point of taxation to 111. This means that IT industry have to register and file compliance report at as high as 111 points. • So this could definitely prove to be a challenge for IT industry to move from single point to multi-point of taxation, thus dealing with center and state authorities ultimately increasing the compliance cost. • Complex Taxation: - Erstwhile taxation of the service IT industry was carried out from the one central location from where the organization head office operates. But by the introduction of ‘Place of supply’ provision in GST, these billing and invoicing will be split depending on the end customers address of residence. Thus service IT industry should obtain registration in those states individually to whom their end customer belongs. By performing such steps the state GST component of GST will be passed on to the states respectively. This whole system of multiple invoicing for same contract delivered under different states will complicate the already complex “TAXATION”.
  • 57. GST on July 1: What's the impact on IT Industry..contd2 • Taxes and its cascading effect: - Cascading effect of taxes can be best explained with the help of an example. If an IT service provider delivers a service to the client. To deliver a particular service he require some input cost ( In our case assume IT software). He acquired suppose the software for Rs 100 including the tax paid on it of Rs 10. During the service delivery he does value addition of Rs 40 and delivers the product making the gross value of deliverables to Rs 140. If the tax charged on the final end product is 10%, the tax on the output of good will be Rs 14. Ø Under Prevailing Tax System The product will be charged to the end customer at Rs 154 (Rs 140 + Rs 14) Ø Under GST The product will be charged to the end customer at Rs 144 (Rs 140 + Rs (14-10)) • Here the service provider has the advantage under GST to reduce the input credit (Offset tax already paid during purchase) at the time of sell. • Thus in GST regime the cost of delivery to the client will be less and the cascading effect of taxes prevailing currently will be evaded. Also reduction in the transaction cost will increase competitiveness in IT industry market.
  • 58. GST on July 1: What's the impact on IT Industry..contd3 • Transition from service tax rate to GST: - Software services under current tax system are charged at 15% service tax. These services under GST rate will be charged under 18%. This will allow the IT service prices to rise for end customers.  Similarly the prices of the electronic packaged software (Software CD’s) are currently charged at 15% service tax + 5% VAT which under GST will be charged at 18%. Thus reducing the net price of electronic software sold.  Thus, there are always pros and cons to every policy change by government, and GST is no different from this. Though it is a long term strategy, and the positive impact shall be seen in the long run only, GST will act as a future proof for Indian businesses to become workable.
  • 59. Ransomware 2.0 blitzes several Indian, European companies  About a month after Wanna-Cry locked up thousands of computers, a new wave of ransomware attacks targeted users across the world, including India and Europe. Consumer, shipping, aviation and oil and gas companies were hit in the UK, Russia, France, Spain and elsewhere.  Petwrap, believed to be an advanced version of an old ransomware known as Petya, locked the computer screens of as many as 20 companies globally with $300 being demanded to free them up. Mondelez, MerckBSE 0.32 % and Maersk were targeted by the ransomware.  Petwrap attacked some companies in the UK, Russia and Ukraine, with subsidiaries of these companies in India also impacted.  Neeraj Bansal, deputy chairman of the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust also confirmed that operations at Gateway Terminals India, operated by Maersk Group-owned APM Terminals at the Mumbai-based port, has been impacted.
  • 60. Ransomware 2.0 blitzes several Indian, European companies..contd1  An Indian automobile company and a manufacturing company were targeted by another ransomware called Mamba on Tuesday morning. A forensic investigator involved in investigating the PetWrap and Mamba attacks said both may have exploited similar software loopholes.  The Trojan targets HR departments with emails that have subject lines reading CV, candidate folio, applicant profile etc. Once installed, it encrypts data and restarts the system. After this, the user gets a message asking for $300 to a Bitcoin account.  There is a need for endpoint security which will automatically detect such vulnerability and patch it. But a decryption key will soon be available in the market in the next few days.  Around 50% of organizations and individuals across India do not use a licensed version of Windows or anti- virus, so chances of this spreading are huge.

  1. We designed this template so that each member of the project team has a set of slides with its own theme where he/she can present their research. Members, here’s how you add a new slide to just your set: Mark where you want to add the slide: Select an existing one in the Thumbnails pane, click the New Slide button, then choose a layout. The new slide gets the same theme as the previous one you selected. Careful! Don’t annoy your fellow presenters by accidentally changing their themes. That can happen if you choose a theme Variant from the Design tab, which changes all of the slides in your presentation to that look.
