Greenaway pool is a municipal
government public facility because “the
general public are directly addressed
through the offering of recreation
services” (E. Lunn, 2020) including
swimming lessons and leisure
swimming.

4. 2210 Recreation
Connection:
Recreation &
Coaching
This is an example of recreation
because it offers services that
”commensurate with individual and
collective interests and serve the need
of the total community” (E. Lunn, 2020).
These services include; public
swimming, swimming lessons as well as
being home to the Cloverdale Tritons
Swim Club. Greenaway Pool “provide[s]
opportunities for recreation to
disadvantaged clients” (E. Lunn, 2020)
by offering public swims at no cost and
having accessibility for those who are
physically disabled. I’ve had the
pleasure of attending this facility since
the age of 4, from participating in
swimming lessons, to swimming with
the Tritons, to finally lifeguarding and
coaching for the Cloverdale Tritons.

Centre

The Surrey Nature Centre is a
public service sector because the
municipal government delivers
these services to provide
education and entertainment for
the community at no cost.

6. SPSC 2210 Connection: Recreation
The Surrey Nature Centre is a recreation example because offers
entertainment for the community while “promot[ing] the
preservation, protection, and enjoyment of natural resources “(E.
Lunn, 2020). The facility offers a wide variety of services including
school programs, self guided story trails and nature activity kits for
teachers. These programs allow citizens of Surrey to explore and
learn about the nature around them.

8. Hazelmere Golf Course

Service Sector: Commercial
Hazelmere Golf Course is a commercial sector because
its service are only provided for a cost with the intent to
“serve public good of some kind in order to retain
control” (E. Lunn, 2020)

9. SPSC 2210 Connection: Recreation, Coaching
and Physical Education
This is a recreation example because it encourage[s] the development of recreation programs and
facilities (E. Lunn, 2020) by offering a variety of facilities for participants to explore and use. These
facilities include; a driving range, natural grass practice facility, 18 -hole course and a tennis facility.
Hazelmere Golf and Tennis Club is also an example of coaching and physical education because it
offers NCCP- certified tennis professionals as well as a golf academy to coach and train members
who are interested in improving their golf and tennis skills.

10. Cloverdale Recreation Centre

11. SPSC 2210 Connection: Recreation and
Coaching
The Cloverdale Recreation centre is an example of recreation because it offers facilities that improves
the physical literacy for consumers of any age, gender and ethnic background (E. Lunn, 2020).
Members can lift weights in the weight room, participate in sports in the gym, and attend yoga
classes offered in the studio. In addition to these services, members can also drop off their kids at
the daycare to be looked after while they workout.
This facility is also an example of coaching because it offers one on one sessions with certified
personal trainers, where they can receive the appropriate tools to improve their physical literacy.

12. World Kickboxing and Extrm
Fitness

Sector: Commercial
World Kickboxing and Extrm Fitness is a commercial
sector because the company makes a profit from the
fees that participants pay to use their services.

13. SPSC 2210 Connection: Recreation and
Coaching
This company is an example of recreation because it serves persons of all ages (E. Lunn, 2020) while
promoting physical and social well-being. Members are given opportunities to partake in classes
focused on specific skills. During these classes, participants will improve their physical well being and
have the chance to meet other people with similar interests. These classes encourage connections to
be made among the community which contributes to a positive atmosphere to exercise in.
World Kickboxing and Extrm Fitness is also an example of coaching because it offers coaching
services for those who want to take their skills to the next level. Participants can work with a
professionally trained coach one on one and receive the necessary feedback and attention to
improve their technique.

14. Non-Profit Sectors

15. Surrey United Soccer Club

Sector: Non-profit
Surrey United is a non-profit organization because they rely on
members and volunteers for sustained survival (Ed. Lunn, 2020). All of
their coaches volunteer their own time to invest in the future (Ed.
Lunn, 2020) of their athletes. Athletes pay for a membership fee for
the season, but the coaches aren’t paid for their services. Surrey
United also offers funding programs to support those who are
struggling to pay their fees. These programs include; Kidsport,
Jumpstart, and Athletics for Kids. In addition to these funding
programs, the club is also sponsored by several companies that
support with covering the costs for equipment, travel and other
expenses not funded by the club.

16. SPSC Connection: Recreation and Coaching
While this sports club is a non-profit
organization, it also promotes health
and well-being through recreation and
sport (Ed. Lunn, 2020) for those in local
communities and like- minded
individuals (Ed. Lunn, 2020). Each
athlete who plays on a Surrey United
team receives coaching from volunteers
who are experienced soccer players
and receive training on how to
appropriately coach. Coaching is also
offered through their development
programs and camps throughout the
year for those who wish to receive extra
training.

17. Cloverdale Tritons Swim Club

Service Sector: Non-profit
The Cloverdale Tritons is a non-profit swim club run by volunteer
coaches and focuses on fundraising throughout the season to
help cover the fees for swim meets. This swim club focuses on a
specific age group (Ed. Lunn, 2020) of children and teens aged
4-18.

18. SPSC 2210 Connection: Recreation and
Coaching
The Cloverdale Tritons Swim Club is an example of both recreation and coaching because it focuses
on developing physical literacy while creating social connections among the participants on the
team. The club has several coaches for each age group and offers coaching opportunities for the
senior members of the club. This improves the connections within the club and it’s a great chance for
participants to improve their swimming technique knowledge.

19. Museum of Surrey

Service Sector: Non-profit
The Museum of Surrey is a non-profit
organization that features a variety of exhibits
showcasing local and international stories.
Members can virtually tour the facility or book a
time to visit and explore the exhibits at no cost.
The museum is entirely funded by the City of
Surrey but also accepts donations from the
public.

20. SPSC 2210 Connection: Recreation
The Museum of Surrey is an example of
recreation because its exhibits
showcasing the City’s history
encourages people to preserve cultural
heritage (Ed. Lunn, 2020). They also do
this by educating people in their
Indigenous Hall, by telling stories of
how the Semiahmoo Nation has
flourished since the Great Flood (City of
Surrey, n.d.). These programs act as a
catalyst for recreation development in
the community (Ed. Lunn, 2020) by
encouraging people to educate
themselves on the area’s history.
